SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Thursday that the city is expected to see a major decline in tax revenue due to the coronavirus. Faulconer said the city usually takes in an estimated 0 million in sales tax throughout the fiscal year. This year, however, the city is expected to lose million in sales tax alone. Similarly, Faulconer added that the city could lose as much as million in tourism tax. The news comes the day after the famous Hotel del Coronado announced its closure amid the COVID-19 pandemic. "We have been saving for a rainy day. This is a hurricane," Faulconer said. The mayor said the federal stimulus package making its way through Washington should offer some help, but urged lawmakers to further help cities financially. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Residents downtown are fighting against adding more low-income housing. They say it's only making the homeless problem worse. Merle Jones moved to this East Village high rise for the views and the lush lifestyle."It's categorized as a luxury apartment complex, and there's nothing really luxury about it at all right now," said Jones. Homeless people frequent the streets and sidewalks outside the property. "There was a knife fight that broke out and that was in the afternoon," said Jones. "My girlfriend she's not even comfortable walking outside alone so its an issue."In an effort to fight the deadly Hepatitis A outbreak,  more shelters and housing solutions are popping up downtown. One of them is a 16-story high rise for low-income families on 14th and Commercial Streets. "I don’t believe that's a good idea," said Jones. "I think they need to clean up the area because when you have that type of housing, it attracts attention from other areas."The high rise is one of five Father Joe's projects to add about 2,500 affordable housing units. One-third of them would be downtown. More than 500 people signed an online petition to move more housing solutions to other parts of the county. "I think it would be a nice distribution of the concentration of it so that way it's not just one area and one area's problem," said Jones. For now, he's stuck paying high rent for a view he's not happy with.  "I pay quite a bit, so I expect a certain level of lifestyle when I'm living here," said Jones. "When my lease is up, I do plan on moving towards the other end of downtown that’s a little safer and a lot cleaner."The building is set to open January 2021.  1830

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego city leaders met Monday to look for new ways to tackle homelessness. Several departments and organizations gave presentations to a committee, lead by Councilmember Chris Ward.The Select Committee on Homelessness met to discuss how to create new employment opportunities for homeless and how to get them into the existing rapid-rehousing programs. They also discussed a new program that would house all homeless services in one location.The San Diego Police Department provided an overview of their new Neighborhood Policing division. They say they are working to provide outreach, mental health services, and enforcement when needed.San Diego residents spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting, thanking the committee for their work but asking them to do more.Several other agencies also had presentations, providing updates on the temporary bridge shelters and the homeless storage facilities.The Select Committee on Homelessness meets one to two times a month. 1013

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police have identified the victim and suspect involved in a deadly downtown stabbing on July 1.According to police, 43-year-old Canthon E. Tripplett was stabbed on the 400 block of Fifth Avenue around 2:30 a.m.When they arrived, officers found a companion of the man providing first aid. The man was taken to the hospital where he later died, police say.RELATED: Man stabbed to death in downtown San DiegoAfter investigating the stabbing, police learned that Tripplett was injured during a fight with two men on the sidewalk. A man matching the description, David Zertuche, 30, was arrested for murder and has been booked into jail for the homicide. 687

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Results of an audit show the City of San Diego has paid hundreds of millions of dollars in liability claims.From 2010 to 2018, the city had 20,000 liability claims, which has resulted in 0 million in public liability costs. That translates to about million per year to settle or resolve these claims.At the top of that list, as far as the number of cases, involves city vehicle accidents with 2,075 claims, where the city paid .7 million. Also included in this list are trips and falls, with 931 claims and the city paid .7 million towards those liability costs.The City Auditor’s Office also made recommendations to reduce the number of claims. When it comes to trips and falls, they suggested the city focus on fixing the sidewalks in high pedestrian areas. Their data has found people are four times as likely to trip and fall in those areas of the damage to the sidewalk.When it comes to accidents involving city drivers, they believe there needs to be more training for them.The report will now be forwarded over to the City Council for review. 1090
