SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Scripps Health in San Diego is inundated with calls from people who are worried that they might have the coronavirus.“Understandably, people are now getting upper respiratory infections and right away they're thinking is this COVID-19 so they're calling the line and we're giving them the help that they need,” says Dr. David Wetherhold.The hospital network's dedicated COVID-19 nurse line is reportedly peaking at 60 calls every 15 minutes, connecting patients to nurses for screenings. If a nurse believes that a phone call warrants a video call and the video call warrants actual testing, the nurse will assign the patient a time to park outside one of the cabanas now staged outside three of the Scripps Health clinics. The patient will then call in. “A single licensed provider will come out to your car [and] do an evaluation. They'll check your blood pressure. They'll check your temperature. They'll check your pulse and your oxygenation level and then they will obtain the COVID-19 sample which is a swab into the nose,” adds Wetherhold.Wetherhold says COVID-19 test results come back in two to four days. Positive patients will only need to return for treatment if their symptoms are unmanageable. He's also working vigorously on Scripps Health’s larger telehealth program. It was supposed to roll out over the next 18 months, but with COVID-19, it's been compressed into a few weeks. Wetherhold tells 10News that patients who are considered "at risk" are in desperate need of virtual care so that they can avoid any potential exposure to COVID-19. “The immunocompromised, transplant patients, heart failure patients or cancer patients. [They’re] going to be our initial focus [with] trying to get them the care they need remotely without bringing them out into the community," Wetherhold said.Scripps Health’s nurse line is 888-261-8431 and is staffed from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.The cabanas are located outside Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines, Scripps Clinic Rancho Bernardo and Scripps Coastal Medical Center Vista and are only available to patients directed there through the nurse line. 2189

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several business owners on University Avenue in Hillcrest say they were vandalized sometime late Tuesday night. The owners think the suspects shot at their windows with a type of pellet gun. At least three businesses had windows either shattered or broken. Benjamin Nicholls, with the Hillcrest Business Association says he feels these businesses were targeted because of the time of year. San Diego Pride is 9 days away. Samir Hannosh owns The Glass Door Cafe, which just opened a week ago. His window replacement could cost him anywhere from ,000-,000. He says he hopes the businesses weren't targeted for being in the LGBTQ neighborhood, adding that all business will be ready and proud for the upcoming Pride celebration.The San Diego Police Department says they are investigating and working to find the person or persons responsible. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police said a mother was drunk and driving her children when she crashed going the wrong way on a Rancho Bernardo street Monday morning.The crash happened about 4:30 a.m. on Camino del Norte, just west of Interstate 15. The woman drove her Chevy SUV east in the westbound lanes of the road, hitting a man in a Jeep Liberty.Officers told 10News the mother, who is in her 30s, had her 8-year-old child in the backseat with her 2-year-old child in a car seat. An infant was also in the car, unrestrained.RELATED: Check traffic conditionsThe infant was taken to Rady Children’s hospital with major injuries. The other children had minor injuries and were rushed to Palomar Hospital.The mother, who had minor injuries, was also taken to Palomar Hospital, along with the male driver of the Jeep. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police, Chula Vista Police, and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reminded the public Friday about DUI enforcement scheduled for the Memorial Day weekend.16 people died and another 385 were injured in alcohol-related collisions during the holiday in 2016.Deputies said they would be conducting additional DUI patrols from Friday at 7 p.m. through early Tuesday morning.San Diego and Chula Vista Police said officers would also conduct extra patrols. Motorcycle and seat belt enforcement patrols were also planned for the weekend.Law enforcement agencies also warned drivers to be aware that driving under the influence of marijuana is also driving impaired."Don't put your life and those of others in danger by driving while impaired," said Sheriff Bill Gore. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some COVID-19 survivors are noticing a surprising symptom months after their battle with the virus: hair loss.Nikki Privett said she had a mild case of COVID-19 back in April, but several months later, she says her hair started falling out in chunks.“I noticed that more and more was coming out in my hands and then eventually in July it became handfuls,” she told our sister station WRTV in Indianapolis. Dr. Nancy Maly, a physician in dermatology at Sharp Rees-Stealy, said she has seen more patients with complaints about hair loss recently, both from those who have recovered from COVID and those who have not been infected."I definitely have seen more patients lately coming in for hair loss -- with and without having had COVID," Maly said. "From what we know about COVID, there's not really a compelling reason to believe that it's the virus itself but more likely it's this stress-induced kind of hair loss that we know about and see all the time."Doctors believe it’s most likely a condition called telogen effluvium, a type of hair loss that can affect both women and men, and typically starts about three months after a stressful event.It can be triggered by emotional stress like a job loss or the death of a loved one, or by physical stress like a serious illness.Typically, adults shed about 100 hairs a day. But Dr. Maly said when your body is in shock or fighting a disease, there can be backlog on that hair loss.“During that stressful time, your body is prioritizing the most important functions and shedding your hair is not one of them,” she said. “So you end up having that delayed reaction where the hairs that were supposed to fall out during that time fall out later.”There is not a direct treatment for telogen effluvium but this temporary form of hair loss usually resolves itself after about three to six months, she said.There’s also early research showing a different kind of link between hair loss and the virus.Two small studies showed that bald men may be up to 40 percent more at risk of developing a severe case of COVID-19. Scientists theorize it’s because bald men have higher levels of a hormone called adrogen that seems to help the virus enter cells. 2216
