ASTANA, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's top political adviser, Jia Qinglin, met here Wednesday with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and both sides called for intensified bilateral ties.Jia, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, said during the meeting that bilateral relations have witnessed fruitful development since the two countries established diplomatic ties 18 years ago.China and Kazakhstan have supported each other in such issues concerning their core interests as sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, Jia said.They also have carried out close cooperation under multilateral frameworks of the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia, the top adviser said.In addition, Jia said, both sides have kept close communications and coordination on major regional and international issues."Deepening relationship between the two was in line with the basic interests of the people in two countries, and China will work hard with Kazakhstan for a sounder and deeper relationship," Jia said.China and Kazakhstan bear great potential in economic development, and the two sides will further strengthen cooperation in the fields of finance, energy, transportation and tourism, Jia said.Nazarbayev hailed the close high-level contacts and the development of ties after the two countries established a strategic partnership in 2005.He also hailed the ever-deepening pragmatic cooperation that has benefited the two countries.Kazakhstan values the development of its ties with China and stands ready to work together to further enhance exchanges and cooperation in such areas as trade and economy, energy, and security so as to keep promoting their strategic relationship, the president said.Nazarbayev also vowed to intensify cooperation with China under the SCO framework."Since Kazakhstan is now chairing the rotating presidency of the organization, we will try all means to prepare and present a successful summit next year," he said.On the same day, Jia also met with Nurlan Nigmatulin, first deputy chairman of People's Democratic Party "Nur Otan." Jia called for closer ties between the Communist Party of China and "Nur Otan" party under the basic principles of "independence, equality, mutual respect and non-interference in other parties' internal affairs."Nigmatulin echoed Jia's remarks, and said he looked forward to closer contacts between the two parties to boost full development of relations between China and Kazakhstan.Jia arrived here Tuesday for a three-day goodwill visit to Kazakhstan.

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China seeks a win-win partnership featuring equality and mutual trust with the United States, as the two countries' interests are deeply correlated in the era of globalization, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said."Relations between China and the United States should be cooperative and win-win and not a zero-sum game," Yang said in an interview in Beijing Friday.Applauding the two countries' consensus to build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive bilateral relationship in the 21st century, Yang said China and the U.S. should boost mutual understanding and learn to trust and respect one another.Mutual understanding is the basis for cooperation and a precondition for avoiding misjudgments, Yang said, adding that China's peaceful development is not only in the interests of the Chinese people but also for the whole world.To strengthen mutual trust, the two sides should learn to respect each other's core concerns and eliminate outdated ways of thinking, said the foreign minister.China adheres to peaceful development and the opening-up strategy that highlights mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, Yang said.China and the United States should respect each other's social system and cultural tradition, and realize that the two countries are at different stages of social development, Yang said.The two countries should properly handle frictions and disputes through dialogue on equal footing, he said.Yang said the bilateral ties have not been without any dispute but "generally, the Chinese-U.S. relations have grown at a steady pace.""We urge the U.S. side to abide by the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques and the U.S.-China Joint Statement. BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese state councilor said on Friday that the Confucius Institute is facing a "new starting point", calling for increased cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries via the institution.While addressing the opening ceremony of the fifth conference of Confucius Institutes in Beijing, Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong said that the institute is being offered new opportunity given exchanges of the diverse cultures in the world and China's wider opening-up."After five years' development, the Confucius Institute is now standing at a new starting point," said Liu, also president of the Confucius Institute headquarters council.The Confucius Institute, named after ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius, is a non-profit public institution which aims to promote Chinese language and culture in foreign countries.Up to now, China has set up more than 320 Confucius Institutes in 96 countries around the globe since the first one was established in 2004, said Liu.Li Changchun, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, also attended the opening ceremony of the annual conference.

SANTIAGO, Chile, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chilean President Sebastian Pinera and visiting Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong met here Wednesday to discuss the development of relations between their two countries since the establishment of diplomatic ties 40 years ago.Pinera said that Chile was the first South American country to establish diplomatic relations with China. WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's rapid economic growth is good for the U.S. workers, and the U.S. government is committed to improving bilateral economic relations with China, said U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on Thursday."China has lifted almost 200 million people out of poverty (in the past two decades). And in the years ahead, hundreds of millions more Chinese will ascend into the middle class," Locke said at a U.S.-China commercial relations forum, which was held in Washington ahead of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) session scheduled for Dec. 14-15."The United States welcomes this growth because this is good for the people of China ... it's good for the global economy, and good for U.S. business and ultimately, U.S. workers," said Locke.He noted that as recently as 40 years ago, the commercial relationship between the United States and China barely existed. But in the recent decades, "we have seen our countries grow progressively closer."In 2009, the bilateral trade volume reached some 365 billion dollars. China was the largest supplier of U.S. goods imports in 2009 and was the third-largest market for U.S. exports, only after Canada and Mexico.Locke mentioned that as U.S. Commerce Secretary, he has visited China for four times."Each time I visit China, I'm absolutely amazed by the transformation and the progress within China," he said.Locke noted that although there are disagreements between the two sides, there are more opportunities for cooperation."In many areas, especially in emerging industries, like clean energy and biotechnology, the interests of China and the United States are tied together. And the reform as good for the U.S. will be good for China as well," he added.Locke also revealed that during the upcoming 21st session of the JCCT in Washington D.C., the two countries will seek to further "nurture and improve the most highly-scrutinized bilateral economic relationship on Earth.""This is our most important bilateral dialogue or mechanism for resolving trade and investment issues between our two countries," he stressed.The session will be co-chaired by Locke and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk with Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will also join the dialogue.
