SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Some people in San Diego are still feeling the shakes after yesterday's Ridgecrest Earthquake. It is prompting concerns about activity along San Diego County's own fault lines. Living in California, we can never say, "We never saw it coming." But seismologists said yesterday's quake was very rare. "It comes along here [points at map] and meets another fault perpendicular, and that's not typically what I work on or what I've seen before," Scripps Institute of Oceanography seismologist, Dr. Debi Kilb, said.The epicenter was not close to California's most known and large fault line, the San Andreas. "This is where our main 6.4 [Magnitude quake] occurred," Dr. Kilb said. "You can see, it's not on any of these really well-known faults. So it's occurring on a fault that's unmapped or unknown."Here in San Diego, there are also many smaller, lesser-known fault lines, like the Rose Canyon Fault. It meets the shore near La Jolla, travels right underneath Interstate 5, through Downtown San Diego, and exits out of the Silver Strand. Dr. Kilb said the Rose Canyon Fault has been seismically inactive since before 1900. The more active fault locally is the San Jacinto Fault near Anza Boreggo. But if a quake were to emerge out of Rose Canyon, it could potentially be very damaging to our area. Being along the coast, San Diego could be under water. "Yes, you can definitely get a tsunami from that," Dr. Kilb said. However, she said a tsunami is most likely in San Diego, after a massive earthquake near an active fault, off the Oregon or Washington Coast. In preparation, the City of San Diego is retrofitting many buildings, like the iconic California Tower in Balboa Park. By the end of the seven-month construction project, the Tower should be able to withstand a significant quake. But aside from buildings and bridges, Dr. Kilb said WE should always be preparing for the next "Big One.""Now is a good time to just look around and say, 'Is there anything breakable on my shelves that I should take down? Are the bookcases actually secure to the ground?' So just do a walkthrough," Dr. Kilb said. You are also encouraged to talk with your family about an emergency plan and have a 3-day emergency kit ready for every family member, including pets. SAN FRANCISCO — Verizon is joining an escalating movement to siphon advertising away from Facebook in an effort to pressure the company into doing more to prevent racist and violent information from being shared on its social networking service.The decision announced Thursday by one of the world's biggest telecommunications companies is part of a boycott organized by civil rights and other advocacy groups under the rallying cry of "#StopHateforProfit."The NAACP and the ADL are among the organizations behind the movement.The protest was spurred by last month's killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.Facebook says it is in talks with the boycott organizers in an effort to become a "force for good."Verizon is by far the largest company to join the movement. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV): Drug enforcement experts in San Diego are warning about a new, deadlier opioid on the streets - Carfentanil."You've got Fentanyl, which is 50 times stronger than heroin. And then Carfentanil, which is 100 times stronger than Fentanyl," explains DEA Special Agent in Charge Colin Ruane.Carfentanil was originally created to be used as a tranquilizer on large zoo animals, like elephants. The FDA initially restricted it's manufacture to just 28 grams per year in the US.According to FDA Spokesperson Lindsay Haake, "The sponsor of Wildnil, a form of Carfentanil, voluntarily relinquished the approval for this potent analog of Fentanyl in March 2018, as it hadn’t been marketed in at least five years, and because the sponsor wanted to avoid any potential public health effects associated with diversion of the drug if marketed in the future."It only takes .02 mg of Carfentanil to cause a deadly overdose in humans. That's about the same size as a couple grains of salt."The fact that it's as potent and deadly as it is, and we don't know when it's going to show up or where it's going to show up is of most concern," Ruane adds.There are currently two cases involving Carfentanil working their way through Federal Court in San Diego. In one, a dealer was caught with 1.77 grams of the drug. In another case, search warrants related to overdose deaths in 2017 led to 20 people charged on 3 separate indictments.So far, only 3 people in San Diego have died from Carfentanil, all in 2017. But the DEA is still sounding the alarm."It's extremely dangerous to the public and that's what we want to get out there," says Ruane.He says drug makers are mixing Carfentanil in counterfeit pills. The fact that just a small quantity will produce a major effect makes it more profitable. Drug manufacturers are including it in pills they try to pass off as Oxycontin or Xanax.Experts say taking a pill like that is the same as playing Russian Roulette."If you're at a pill party and people are distributing pills, you have no idea what's inside," says Assistant US Attorney Sherri Hobson. "Why would you take something when you have no idea what's inside?"Ruane says that most of the illegal pills are made in back rooms, bathrooms, warehouses or other labs with no quality control. That makes them more dangerous because there's no consistency between what's in each pill."You could have two people, they take the same kind of pill from the same batch, and one person is fine while the other one dies," he says.He says the safest thing to do is avoid any pills when you don't know their source."If you're not under treatment from a doctor and you haven't gotten the pill from a legitimate pharmacy, don't take it. SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - A series of problems at a handful of California gas refineries have caused prices to surge over the last month.According to the Automobile Club of Southern California, the average cost of gas in California is .955 per gallon. That's more than a dollar more than the national average of .811. Alabama has the lowest gas prices in the country at .499 per gallon.Because of strict environmental regulations, most of the gas in California has to be made in state. So when local refineries go off-line, it directly impacts prices.AAA says at least 6 of the 12 gas producing plants in the state have had problems in the last month, leading to shut-downs.On March 15, a fire shut down the Wilmington Phillips 66 refinery.Ten days later, the Valero refinery in the Bay Area shut down when a scrubber malfunctioned, sending black smoke into the air.Flaring issues caused outages at two plans in Southern California, the Chevron plant in El Segundo and the Valero in Wilmington.Meanwhile, PBF Energy in Torrance had routine maintenance scheduled, which decreased production."We don't have pipelines that can pipe relatively cheap gasoline to use from other states," says Marie Montgomery with the Automobile Club of Southern California. "We have to rely on shipping of gasoline when our refineries have problems."According to the California Energy Commission, refineries in Washington and the US Gulf Coast can produce gas for California, as can refineries in Eastern Canada, Finland, Germany, the US Virgin Islands, the Middle East and Asia. But it takes time for those shipments to arrive.In the first week of April, the state didn't receive a single drop of imported gasoline.As we wait, local refineries have dipped into their reserves to meet demand, taking two million barrels out of reserves."The imported gas is going to be coming here, there's no doubt about that," says Montgomery. "We've got the highest prices in the country by far right now. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Hundreds of surfers are hitting the waves, in Mission Beach, to support young men around the County.It’s called the “100 Wave Challenge.” The event benefits the Boys to Men Mentoring Network. Surfers are determined to catch 100 waves by the end of the day.They can participate solo or with a team.
