WASHINGTON — Stimulus checks and unemployment benefits may be getting a lot of the headlines, but plenty of businesses stand to gain from Congress' latest economic relief package. After all, while 0 stimulus checks for those making under ,000 a year and 0-a-week unemployment bonuses for those out of work will help many struggling, aid to businesses may prevent millions of layoffs in the coming months. AIRLINESThe airline industry has been hit particularly hard this pandemic. The new relief package provides billion to airlines to keep their payrolls operating. American Airlines and United Airlines have already indicated they will begin hiring back furloughed employees as a result of the infusion of cash. ENTERTAINMENT VENUES The arts have been impacted greatly during this pandemic and shows are expected to be canceled throughout much of 2021. The bill provides billion for entertainment venues and the arts to help offset losses. RESTAURANTS The restaurant industry has struggled for nearly a year now and no targeted relief is included in the bill. Restaurants owners will have access to more than 0 billion dollars' worth of Paycheck Protection Program loans, however. This time they will be able to receive higher amounts and use the loans for more things other than payroll, such as remodeling their facility to make it safer or buying perishable items. LANDLORDS billion is included in rental assistance to help tenants pay the rent. This in turn helps landlords who have struggled as well with some tenants being out of work and behind on payments. Congress also extended the moratorium on evictions through the end of January. 1677

VISTA (CNS) - An intoxicated driver who struck a homeless man in Oceanside and continued driving for more than a mile, even though the victim's body had gone through her windshield and ended up on the front seat, was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years to life in state prison.Esteysi "Stacy" Sanchez, 31, was convicted in April of second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run in the death of 69- year-old Jack Ray Tenhulzen. At one point, the sentencing hearing was interrupted because the defendant was sobbing uncontrollably, said Deputy District Attorney Robert Bruce.RELATED: Woman accused of hitting pedestrian, driving with his body in windshield found guiltyThe prosecutor told jurors that Sanchez displayed a conscious disregard for human life when she drove drunk and ran over Tenhulzen on a sidewalk on Mission Road near the state Route 76 bridge the morning of June 27, 2016.The victim went through the windshield and into the passenger seat of her car. Part of one of his legs -- which was severed in the accident -- was found at the back of the car near the rear window.Tenhulzen was hit so hard that he was ripped out of his pants and shoes, authorities said. After a night of drinking, Sanchez left a hotel room the next morning and was told by a male friend that she was too drunk to drive, Bruce told the jury.Defense attorney Herb Weston argued that Sanchez was tired and fell asleep behind the wheel and rode up on the sidewalk, striking Tenhulzen. He said Sanchez "freaked out" when she saw the victim's body in her car and kept driving, finally stopping a block from her home.Sanchez, who lived in Oceanside, still had shards of glass in her hair when she was taken into custody. Her blood-alcohol content was measured at between .18 and .19 percent -- more than twice the legal limit of .08 percent -- two hours after the collision, Bruce said. 1891

WASHINGTON — The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose last week to 778,000, evidence that the U.S. economy and job market remain under strain as coronavirus cases surge and colder weather heighten the risks. The Labor Department’s report Thursday said jobless claims climbed from 748,000 the week before. Before the virus struck hard in mid-March, weekly claims typically amounted to roughly 225,000. They shot up to 6.9 million during one week in March before dropping yet remain historically high more than eight months later, with many businesses unable to fully reopen. 604

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is pointing fingers over the failure to deliver coronavirus aid.Pelosi is blaming Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for failing to produce answers to her demands for Democratic priorities as part of an almost trillion aid package.A Thursday morning letter to Mnuchin was the latest volley in a blame game over the failed talks, which have cratered before the election. This morning, as our nation approaches nine million COVID-19 cases and a quarter of a million lives lost, I sent a letter to @stevenmnuchin1 seeking the Trump Admin’s responses on several outstanding items in COVID relief negotiations. WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is going to keep people in suspense about how he'll respond to the election. The Republican president is refusing to publicly commit to accepting the results in November. Trump made a similar threat weeks before the 2016 vote. Trump told Chris Wallace on Fox News Channel this weekend it's too early to make such an ironclad guarantee and scoffed at polls showing him lagging behind Democrat Joe Biden. The Biden campaign says the American people will decide the election and the government “is perfectly capable of escorting trespassers out of the White House.” Trump also is hammering the Pentagon brass for favoring renaming bases that honor Confederate military leaders.During the interview with Wallace, the president also reiterated there will not be a nationwide mask mandate. He said he is "a believer in masks," but the decision to require face coverings is up to the states to decide. 939
