The San Diego Hunger Coalition is encouraging San Diegans to take part in the annual CalFresh Challenge to raise awareness about food insecurity. CalFresh public assistance allots .07 daily in food benefits, according to SDHC. The system, known nationally as SNAP, helps those in need but it is insufficient for helping people meet basic needs, SDHC says. During the CalFresh Challenge, participants must spend no more than .35 for five days on all meals, drinks, and snacks. During the week, participants must not accept free food. San Diego Hunger Coalition wants participants to post about the experience on social media with the hashtag #CalFreshChallenge. Participants are also asked to donate to SDHC. 784

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Construction has started on Mission Valley's first public elementary school.The new preschool through 5th-grade campus at the corner of Via Alta and Civita Boulevard will serve residents living in the Civita residential development. Families living in the Mission Valley and Fashion Valley neighborhoods will also make use of the new school.The campus will feature classrooms with roll-up doors that open to the outside for 1st- through 5th-grade students; dedicated play areas for preschool, kindergarten, and 1st- through 5th-grade students; "makerspaces" for students; and an indoor-outdoor multipurpose facility.San Deigo Unified School District provided a virtual walkthrough of the campus here."With more significant growth planned in the area, we must prepare for the influx of new families and students," said Dr. John Lee Evans, Board of Education President. "This community deserves a quality neighborhood school."The campus will enroll up to 500 students and construction is expected to finish in spring 2022.The new school is funded through 2012's voter-approved Proposition Z bond measure, state schools facilities funding, and developer fees, according to San Diego Unified School District. 1231

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Border officials say they have received enough funding to replace 100 miles of border fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border.The Trump Administration will put forth about .6 billion through the 2018 Congressional appropriations.  The new border wall provides a comprehensive system of wall, lighting, and technologies, Acting Commissioner Ronald Vitiello said during a press conference Friday.In San Diego, a total of 28 miles of border barrier will be replaced. Fourteen miles of "dilapidated" border wall constructed with landing mats will be replaced with new steel bollard wall, according to Vitiello. Another 14 miles of secondary barrier inside San Diego will also be replaced.RELATED: President Trump says San Diego 'desperately' wants a border wall while touring prototypesIn Calexico, officials are on schedule to build a new 30-foot high wall, replacing two miles of pedestrian barrier, Vitiello said."We appreciate this down payment for our needs," Vitiello told reporters but added the appropriations do not fully fund their needs in other critical locations.The wall system being installed will not utilize the prototypes President Donald Trump recently visited the San Diego area to inspect. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the elderly population is told to stay home to protect themselves from coronavirus, a group like ElderHelp is necessary. ElderHelp has been helping seniors with anything from giving rides to grocery shopping for decades. Now, they have adapted to COVID-19 restrictions, with a system where volunteers pick up groceries from the nonprofit's hub, then drive the food and supplies to the seniors’ homes to deliver without contact.ElderHelp has seen a 773% increase in requests for service since the pandemic began and now completes 522 deliveries on average every week.Carol Greene is one of the seniors who has food delivered to her San Diego home and said the communication with the staff brightens her days.“I look at ElderHelp as all the sunshine. You might be at home on your normal, boring day at times and whoop there’s the phone,” she said.They just received a 0,000 grant from the San Diego Foundation but say they are still always in need of both donations and volunteers, especially in light of the recent increase in demand.Nicole Darling has been volunteering with ElderHelp since 2003 and said the seniors appreciate the food, but always seem to enjoy the interaction as well, especially during a time of isolation.“It’s a small amount of effort to make a huge amount of good for people who are really vulnerable and alone,” said Darling. 1382

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As a woman lay paralyzed from a horrific accident, police say someone was inside her car, stealing from her.  The search for that thief is now turning to San Diego County."She was the nicest, most wonderful person I've ever known," said Don Nelson.Nelson says his wife of 27 years, Terri, was on her way to pick up her father for a hospital trip in August when a truck rear-ended her car at a stoplight in Riverside.  As she lay with her neck broken, amid the commotion of bystanders and first responders coming to her aid, police say someone got into her car and stole her purse.Detectives say within days of the accident, surveillance images show her using Terri's credit cards and writing checks in her name. Nelson says as some ,000 worth of purchases were made at various businesses, from fast food restaurants and Albertsons to Costco."I think that's the lowest form of life that could possibly be. You have to be a sorry person to do something like that," said Nelson.For three months, Terri was paralyzed and on a ventilator, until she passed last week from complications from the accident.  Her husband's grief is not the only emotion that consumes him. There is also anger. He's still dealing with collection agencies seeking money from the thief's shopping spree.  During that crime spree, police believe the woman rented a Nissan Rogue in Terri's name, before the CHP pulled that car over on a highway in San Diego County. The two men inside the car have yet to lead detectives to the woman, but police hope tips from the public will."I just can't believe a lightning bolt didn't strike the person.
