BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- China's crude steel output would surely top 500 million tonnes this year, said Luo Bingsheng, vice chairman of China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) on Saturday.     In the first half, China produce 266.58 million tonnes of crude steel, up 1.23 percent over the same period last year. In June alone, the daily output was about 1.65 million tonnes on average.     Compared with an increasing production capacity, the country's steel enterprises saw declining profits and revenues in the first six months amid low steel prices resulted from weaken market demands.     According to statistics covered 71 of China's large-scale steel producers, total business revenue of them dropped 28.07 percent year on year to 955 billion yuan (139.82 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half. Profit decreased by 98.32 percent to 1.73 billion yuan.     China produced 500 million tonnes of crude steel last year, accounting for 38 percent of the world total production volume.

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Fifty-two types of new weapon systems developed with China's own technologies, including airborne early warning and control (AEWC) aircraft, will be showcased at the military parade celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of New China.     Further cutting-edge weaponry would include sophisticated radar, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and satellite communication devices of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), Lieutenant General Fang Fenghui, general director of the parade, told Xinhua Wednesday.     The Oct. 1 parade would also show personnel and equipment from the navy, air force and China's ballistic missile corps, Fang said.     Fang did not identify the specific models of the weapon systems but said all of the weapons are tagged: "Made in China".     "They (the weapon systems) embody the ongoing transformation of the PLA from a labor-intensive force to technology-intensive might be capable of joint operations in modern warfare," said Fang, who is also commander of the PLA's Beijing Military Area Command.     "The weapon systems to be shown in the parade also showcase the ability of the PLA to carry out diverse military missions," he said.     There will be 56 regiments on the ground and in the air during the parade, symbolizing the country's 56 ethnic groups marching along the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics in solidarity, Fang said.     Fourteen of the regiments will march through Chang'an Avenue on foot, 30 in wheeled transport and 12 will take to the air.     All the troops in the parade will be dressed in PLA 07-type uniforms and most of them are from generations born in the 1980s and 1990s.     Compared with the previous military parade on National Day 10 years ago, this one would have less troops and equipment but increased high-tech weaponry and special force units, Fang said.

ANCHORAGE, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Saturday met with Alaska Governor Sean Parnell here before winding up his week-long official goodwill visit to the United States.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, said he was glad to have Alaska as the final stop in his visit to the United States.     Apart from meeting with U.S. government and parliament officials, Wu said he also conducted comprehensive contacts with people from all walks of life in the U.S. during his stay.     The major topics included how to strengthen the Sino-U.S. cooperation, how to join hands to face challenges and how to realize common development of the two countries, Wu said. His trip to the United States was the first official visit to America by a top Chinese legislator in the past two decades.     Wu met with U.S. President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during the stay.     Before visiting the Unites States, Wu has visited Cuba and the Bahamas.

WUHAN, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- East Star Airlines, the debt-laden private airline based in central China's Wuhan City, officially went bankrupt after its restructuring application was rejected Thursday.     The Intermediate People's Court in Wuhan City said the plan submitted by the East Star Group and ChinaEquity was unfeasible and failed to meet the conditions for a legal restructuring.     ChinaEquity, an investment company founded in 1999 in Beijing, had promised to invest 200 million to 300 million yuan (29 million to 44 million U.S. dollars) for the restructuring plan.     However, it did not specify the source of the funding and failed to provide certificates and documents, and lacked measures to protect creditors, the court said.     The court said East Star Airlines had no operating income in 2008, while ChinaEquity recorded 470,000 yuan in main business income and a 187,477-yuan deficit last year. BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's Supreme People's Court issued a new regulation Tuesday to encourage parties involved in conflicts to mediate for resolution.     The regulation is in response to a rapid increase in lawsuits during the past two years.     It clarifies transitional procedures for parties to cease actions in the people's courts and turn instead to industrial or community mediation.     The move is an attempt to bring social organizations into play at an action's early stage to ease public discontent and prevent aggravation of resentment and tension. It is in accord with the new objective of a harmonious society outlined by the Communist Party of China and the government.     According to the court's statistics, lawsuits for criminal, civil affairs and administrative issues submitted to courts around the country in 2007 increased by 7 percent from 2006 to 5,550,062 cases. The courts handled 6,288,831 lawsuits in 2008, 13.31 percent up from 2007.     "Entering a transitional period of development, Chinese society is encountering an increasing number of new contradictions and problems it has never before experienced," said court spokesman Sun Jungong Tuesday.     "Mediation bodies need to be strengthened to make a bigger contribution to the resolution of disputes," he said.     The regulation means agreements achieved in arbitration or mediation by administrative bodies, mercantile organizations and industrial groups will have the same force in law as those judged by the people's courts.     "The courts at all levels should guide mediation and arbitration methods in a scientific, fair and rational way as well as act as supervisors and executors of agreements," said Jiang Huiling, vice director of the SPC's judicial reform office.
