SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council on Monday will honor area residents who assisted victims in the Las Vegas mass shooting that left 58 concert-goers dead and hundreds of others wounded.Councilwoman Lorie Zapf plans to introduce a proclamation declaring "Las Vegas Unsung Heroes Recognition Day" in San Diego.In it, she calls the Oct. 1 shooting at a country music festival "one of the most horrific events in American history" and lauds Taylor Winston, Jenn Lewis, Officer Max Verduzco, Officer Tom McGrath and his wife, Tiffany.RELATED: Brother of Las Vegas shooting victim Jennifer Irvine urges educator-only pension to divest in gunsShe said Winston -- an ex-Marine living in Ocean Beach -- and Lewis, his girlfriend, found a truck with its keys in the ignition and used it to rush about two dozen shooting victims to a hospital.Verduzco knocked over a fence, allowing the crowd to escape the scene, according to Zapf. "They humbly accept this praise, but they are quick to recognize the many unsung heroes who also stepped up to the plate to help their fellow concert-goers to safety."A spokeswoman for Zapf said the five named in the proclamation all plan to attend the event at a City Council meeting.The gunman, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino into the crowd at the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival during a performance by Jason Aldean. And while we were tying to get (security personnel's) attention and tending to her, the second round of (gunfire) came on, and I remember I just grabbed my wife ... and I just pulled her close to me, and I laid on top of her, and I tried putting her on top of the (wounded) girl, and still everybody had their hands on top of mine."He said he helped Tiffany and others scale a fence, climbed over himself and realized he'd become separated from his wife. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Regal Cinemas might be closing all 543 of its theaters in the United States as early as this week due to continued revenue losses from the coronavirus pandemic.``We can confirm we are considering the temporary closure of our U.K. and US cinemas, but a final decision has not yet been reached. Once a decision has been made we will update all staff and customers as soon as we can,'' the theater chain's parent company Cineworld tweeted on Sunday.A report in Variety the previous day, which cited an unidentified source, said the company would be closing its theatres in the United States and the United Kingdom as early as this week.Regal is the second-largest theater chain in the United States after AMC.The chain has eight locations in San Diego County. Indoor movie theaters are currently permitted at reduced capacity in the county, and with other protocols in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.Variety's report came one day after it was announced that the release of the latest James Bond film, ``No Time to Die,'' would be postponed until April 2021. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Vector Control officials reminded residents today to protect themselves against wild rodents after three deer mice were found carrying the potentially deadly hantavirus.Vector Control officials collected the mice in Boulevard during a regular monitoring exercise. Hantavirus occurrences in wild rodents are not uncommon in undeveloped areas of the county, but residents can avoid potentially infected rodents by keeping them out of areas like sheds, garages and homes.Vector Control officials also found five hantavirus-carrying mice in Bonsall, 4S Ranch and Potrero in January.There is no cure or vaccine for hantavirus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of infection can include fever, aches in the large muscle groups, dizziness, digestive issues and abdominal pain. Hantavirus infection is generally unlikely, though, because rodents tend to avoid humans and developed spaces.Residents are advised to use ``wet cleaning'' methods like a bleach solution spray or a sponge and a mop if they find rodent droppings or nests.Sweeping or vacuuming nests and droppings can send the virus into the air, raising the chance of infection. Vector Control officials also advise residents to double-bag and seal rodent debris before throwing it away.Residents can avoid hantavirus exposure by sealing holes that are larger than a dime in homes and adjacent spaces and quickly eliminating rodent debris and infestations. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate urged prosecutors Friday to take a zero-tolerance stance on predatory scams involving fraudulent checks, particularly amid the COVID-19 pandemic when people may be especially susceptible to fraud.In a letter sent Friday to California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, the councilman suggested removing the possibility of prosecuting Penal Code 476 -- which makes creating or passing a fake check a crime -- as a misdemeanor, increasing the fine amount and maximum jail sentence for those found guilty, and assigning additional Department of Justice resources to investigate check fraud complaints.The councilman wrote that scams in the form of fake check deposits "are becoming widespread in Southern California and are causing our most vulnerable to lost thousands of dollars they cannot afford."Cate said one such fraudulent check was recently received by one of his staff members, which appeared authentic and bore the name of a "legitimate financial institution."He said he worried that with high unemployment rates amid the pandemic, people would be more likely to fall prey to scams of this sort."Taken as a whole, these measures will send a clear message to those who would attempt to prey on the most vulnerable and susceptible in our society that California stands with consumers and will not tolerate this fraudulent conduct," Cate wrote.A copy of Cate's letter, which features examples of a fraudulent check and typical accompanying letter from a supposedly legitimate company, can be viewed at https://www.sandiego.gov/sites/default/files/predatory_check_scam_enforcement.pdf. 1650

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Some San Diego city council members and employees present at a city council meeting this week were informed Wednesday that an employee at the meeting has tested positive for coronavirus.The positive patient attended Tuesday's meeting and a request was made of affected individuals to schedule a COVID-19 test and self-quarantine for the next two weeks, according to a spokesman for Mayor Kevin Faulconer.Anyone entering a city facility is subject to temperature checks and must adhere to social distancing protocols and employees must wear face masks.Council members Chris Cate, Monica Montgomery, Vivian Moreno and Scott Sherman were present for the meeting.
