TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — The Trump administration plans to lift endangered species protections for gray wolves across most of the nation by the end of the year. “We’re working hard to have this done by the end of the year and I’d say it’s very imminent,” Aurelia Skipwith, the director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, told The Associated Press in a phone interview Monday.More than 6,000 wolves now roam portions of the western Great Lakes and northern Rocky Mountains. The Fish and Wildlife Service last year proposed dropping the wolf from the endangered list in the lower 48 states, exempting a small population of Mexican wolves in the Southwest. It was the latest of numerous attempts to return management authority to the states — moves that courts have repeatedly rejected after opponents filed lawsuits.Director Skipwith told The Associated Press in a phone interview that the administration also is pushing ahead with a rollback of protections for migratory birds despite a recent setback in federal court. 1033

Times Square was a hive of activity Tuesday afternoon, as more than 40,000 bees swarmed a hot dog stand at the corner of Broadway and West 43rd Street.Known as an absconded hive, the bees were looking for a new home to escape the sweltering heat, said Officer Darren Mays, one of the New York Police Department's two official beekeepers."The hive got overcrowded because it was hot and humid and they just needed a new place to go so they can keep cool," Mays said. He also runs the official NYPD Bees Twitter account, which was buzzing with likes and retweets as many New Yorkers learned that their police force had beekeepers on staff.Mays said the bees likely went looking for a new home after leaving one of the rooftop hives of a nearby building.Second-beekeeper-in-command, Officer Michael Lauriano, responded to the scene in full protective gear, including a netted bee helmet. It took Lauriano 45 minutes to carefully vacuum the bees. The street was cordoned off and no injuries were reported, according to the NYPD.Mays confirmed the bees have been safely stored in a hive box and are being transported by police van to an apiary on Long Island."Unfortunately, they won't be able to make any honey this season," said Mays, explaining that they will have to be well fed to make it through the winter.Mays, who has served since 2014 as the NYPD's beekeeper in addition to his regular duties, said this has been one of the slowest bee seasons in recent years. He has had to make similar "scoops" in the past.Hives of this scale have been buzzing around Manhattan for some time, said Detective Hubert Reyes, public Information officer for the NYPD. "That's why we have a beekeeper. You gotta be ready for everything right?" 1736

This year has been … wild. As many of us look ahead to 2021, it’s probably with a mix of hopefulness and optimism. The Pantone Color Institute, the color authority in the design industry, has revealed that the Color of the Year for 2021 is actually two colors, Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow.“The selection of two independent colors highlight how different elements come together to express a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting, conveying the idea that it’s not about one color or one person, it’s about more than one,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, in a press release.“Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted, this is essential to the human spirit,” Eiseman added. This is the first time a shade of gray has been selected. Next year will be the second time two colors will share the spotlight, the first time was in 2016.Pantone has been selecting a Color of the Year for the last 22 years. The selected color typically influences packaging and product development."Our goal is to engage people in a conversation around color," Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, told CNN. "It has to be organic. It has to be truthful to what's taking place."This color combination already popped up on fashion runways this fall, and will likely be seen on more products, apparel, home furnishings and packaging. They had selected Classic Blue for 2020, as a sense of reassurance as the world moved into a new decade."In retrospect, now we look back at it and think, 'Well, that was a fortuitous choice for the year,'" Eiseman told CNN recently. 1784

There is a lot of concern along the Gulf Coast right now. Two tropical systems are headed for the area at the same time, potentially impacting land on the same day. It's very rare according to the National Weather Service (NWS), something we haven't seen in decades. What's most concerning, is the amount of people in the path of the storms.“The number of people that could be impacted by these two systems is huge, you know, from the northern part of Texas, throughout the entire coast of west side of Florida and the panhandle as well,” said Joel Cline, a meteorologist and NWS Tropical Program Coordinator.Large amounts of rain, storm surge and wind are threatening the Gulf Coast early next week. So, could these systems merge? It's something called the Fujiwhara effect. It's named after a Japanese meteorologist who first described the effect. It's something that happens in the pacific with typhoons.“That’s where two come in close contact and then they move around each other counterclockwise,” said Cline. “That's not going to happen in this one.”There is another potential impact of these systems being close to each other.“So, when you have two of these in one area, then the descending air may get into the other one and help weaken it or make the other one stronger,” said Cline. There's still a lot of time for things to change. Regardless, meteorologists say people in the paths of these storms need to be hurricane ready.“Labor Day is essentially the halfway point and so we've got a lot more hurricane season left and what we’ve already been through,” said Cline. 1584

Thousands of elevator permits in San Diego County are out of date, according to the Department of Industrial Relations. In San Diego and Imperial Counties, a DIR spokesperson said there are 12,541 elevator permits issued. Of those, 6,932 are expired. DIR spokesperson Frank Polizzi said there is no penalty for expired permits, “but a unit should not be running if it has been tagged out of service for a maintenance/safety reason.”Team 10 visited several elevators in downtown San Diego and found there was no permit displayed in the elevator at all—including an elevator at Horton Plaza and one operated by the City of San Diego. Polizzi said there are other reasons a displayed permit could be expired, besides the elevator being out of compliance. The owner could be waiting for a Cal/OSHA permit inspection or they have not posted the most updated permit. 868
