SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A massive police presence was seen on the border of Clairemont and Bay Park after police received a call about a possible assault with a deadly weapon Monday. According to authorities, the incident happened on the 3300 block of Clairemont Avneue. After investigating, police say there was no assault. A child's grandmother called police saying there had been a shooting.The child's mother also showed up at the scene and told police the grandmother has a mental issue and that there had been no assault.  557

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A Lemon Grove man was charged Wednesday with aiming a laser pointer at a San Diego Police helicopter as a demonstration moved through Hillcrest last weekend.Rudy Alvarez, 24, was charged with aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft hovering over the protest on June 6, according to the Department of Justice.A federal complaint alleges Alvarez shined a laser at the SDPD aircraft at about 8:30 p.m. in the area of the 500 block of University Ave. During that time, a large demonstration was moving through the area, investigators added.Alvarez was located multiple times over the next hour in the crowd, before police identified him on G St. just before 10 p.m. and arrested him without incident.Detectives say they found a high-powered gray metal laser pointer in his front left pant pocket."Aiming a laser pointer at or near an aircraft could cause distraction or blindness to a pilot and the consequences could be devastating," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. "We support the Constitutional rights of free speech and assembly, but it is our duty to protect the public and law enforcement from danger."Alvarez's bond was set at ,000 and his next hearing was set for June 23. 1205

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A heartbreaking scene greeted a youth soccer club in Mira Mesa.All four of their goals were severely damaged.Aaron Vazquez, 12, has been playing soccer since he can remember. But last week, his fun came to an ugly halt."My heart dropped and my stomach tightened," said Vazquez.Juventus San Diego stores its goals at the Mira Mesa Recreation Center. Aaron's father, Sabino, is coaching director of the club. Membership includes about 130 kids, ages 2 to 13.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"Looked like somebody trashed the goals, bent them and broke them ... left them in the middle of the field," said Sabino Vazquez.The goals are valued at about ,200.Sabino Vazquez says they tried to bend the bent parts back into place, and bought new parts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local Marine Corps veteran will be part of the National Memorial Day Concert in Washington, D.C. He'll be honored for his service, and the work he does with other veterans who have PTSD.Bill Rider is the founder of American Combat Veterans of War, a non-profit that he started in 2013."We let them know we're going to be there for them, we mentor them," Rider said about his group. "Just about anything and everything they could possibly need, ACVOW does."ACVOW runs programs that help veterans cope with PTSD. Their "Veterans Moving Forward" program visits vets at the Vista Detention Center. Its goal is to reduce recidivism rates to below 10% for veterans.Another program called Safe Warrior Outreach pairs younger veterans with older veterans to talk through their struggles and share stories."We're trying to chip away at the stigma of PTSD," said Rider. "Human beings were not meant to watch their friends be killed in such a visceral way. And, they're not meant to kill other human beings."It's an issue he has first-hand experience with. Rider joined the Marine Corps when he was 19 years old and was part of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment. That regiment became famous for its part in the battle of Khe Sahn, where it had the highest casualty rate in Marine Corps history."It was, on a daily basis, a visceral passing of Marines and warriors," said Rider. "In one battle, we lost 45 or 50 people, and another 150 were wounded."Rider left the Marines in 1969. When he returned home, it wasn't long before the lingering effects of PTSD started to show."The way I knew something was quite different was when I was transferred back to my little hometown in Ohio. A car backfired, and I instinctively laid out on the sidewalk, expecting more shots," he said.Now he's dedicated his life to helping other vets who deal with PTSD. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was hospitalized after being shot as he sat in his car at a Southcrest park, San Diego police said.The incident happened just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 4100 block of Newton Avenue, according to police.The 26-year-old victim and a 19-year-old man were sitting in a BMW when two men walked up to the car. Police said the two men pounded on the car’s windows before they opened fire.The victim was shot in the left thigh and left wrist, police said. The 19-year-old was not hurt.The victim drove the bullet-riddled BMW away from the park and called 911 to report the shooting. Police made contact with the BMW on National Avenue and the victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.According to police, the suspected shooters are believed to have fled the park in a white pickup truck. Twelve shell casings were recovered at the scene, police added.Descriptions of the two suspected shooters were not immediately available. 984
