SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, people in San Diego are looking back at how companies in this city helped NASA achieve the historic flight.You could argue that, if not for San Diego, the moon landing would never have gotten off the ground, or landed safely on the moon.Ryan Aeronautical Company built the lunar radar system that helped guide the lunar lander as it touched down on the moon's surface.General Dynamics built the Atlas Rockets that took some of the flights into outer-space."They didn't take them all the way up to the moon with the Atlas, but they helped set the stage to move forward to doing it," says San Diego Air and Space Museum Marketing Director David Neville.The museum has an Atlas Rocket on display at Gillespie Field, towering above the skyline. It also has the Apollo 9 capsule at Balboa Park.One of the docents at the museum worked on the antennaes that helped the capsules stay in constant contact with mission control."I can bring people over here and point to it and say that's what I did," says Ronald Pitcher, who volunteers at the museum and was an engineer working on the Mercury capusule, the Gemini and the Apollo spacecrafts. "It's a proud moment to be able to do that."Pitcher says he feels privileged to have played a small role in landing a man on the moon. He wishes the US had sent more people up."There's no question in my mind that we should go back," he says. "We should have done it when we had the technology and the poeple and experience and facilities in place."Saturday night, on the 50th anniversary of the landing, the Air and Space Museum will host a party to celebrate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Capt. Andy Williams, Commander of the California Highway Patrol Oceanside Station, is under investigation after his arrest for suspicion of domestic violence.ABC 10News obtained the request for a restraining order against Williams, filed by his ex-wife. In the court documents, she details an argument the two got into at his home in Carlsbad Oct. 19. She claims he struck her near her buttocks with enough force to leave a hand mark and welts.Carlsbad police confirmed to ABC 10News that they arrested Williams. A spokesperson for the District Attorney tells ABC 10News they are investigating the case to decide whether to file charges.Williams is out on bail. CHP has placed him on administrative leave and removed his powers as a peace officer.CHP Border Commander Chief Omar Watson sent ABC 10News a statement:"The CHP is aware of the arrest of Capt. Andy Williams by the Carlsbad Police Department for alleged behavior that occurred while the employee was off duty. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cara Knott's family has written a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom asking that Craig Peyer remain behind bars.In December 1986, Peyer -- then a California Highway Patrol officer -- pulled over Knott on Interstate 15 in the Rancho Penasquitos area. Peyer beat Knott, strangled her, and threw her body over a bridge.Peyer was eventually convicted of killing the 20-year-old San Diego State student in 1988.Peyer's next parole hearing isn't until 2027, but in their letter to the governor, Knott's family says they've learned inmates are being released from Peyer's prison because of COVID-19.“This is precisely NOT a person who deserves to be released early from prison for humanitarian reasons. Officer Peyer showed NO Mercy when he murdered my sister," Knott's sister wrote in her letter to the governor.ABC 10News reached out to California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for clarification. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- At least four people were stabbed in a brawl that erupted following a car show in Kearny Mesa early Thursday morning.San Diego police said the incident happened at a Chevron gas station in the 7700 block of Copley Park Place just after 12 a.m.According to police, about 50 people appeared at the gas station following a car show at a nearby park. During the gathering, a fight broke out, and a male pulled out a handgun and fired several gunshots.At the same time, another male used a knife to slash the tires of several vehicles and then tried to stab another male.When officers arrived at the gas station, those involved in the reported incident fled the area. Police discovered shell casings and blood at the scene.A short time later, police learned two people with stab wounds arrived at a Kaiser Permanente facility on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. Both victims were then transferred to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment.Police learned two more people with stab wounds showed up at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.According to police, the victims were between age 16-21. The victims described the suspect as a Hispanic male.No arrests have been made. 1190
