Even shorter breaks can erase some lessons.A special program at San Diego Unified is helping keep kids stay sharp and excited about learning all year round, even during breaks. It's about making learning a fun, family affair.In a classroom at Rosa Parks Elementary School in City Heights, 7-year-old students Melody and Isabella are getting some one-on-one attention with their lessons. The teachers in this case are Melody's grandmother and Isabella's mom."Everyday they have to read. Everyday they have homework to do," said Anna Gonzalez. She and Maria Theresa Jaume are among a growing number of parents and guardians getting more involved with their kid's education through the "Family Engagement Department" at San Diego Unified."So, I now know how to ask her questions," says Gonzalez, "How to engage her with the reading and things like that.""It solidifies the bond right," says Family Engagement Program manager Pamela King, "It shows kids that education is important." King says the program was established in 2016, inviting families to become partners in their kid's education with tips on how to do it."You're reading a fiction book. October, 2003, the Cedar Fire broke out in the Cleveland National Forest and exploded across San Diego County. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students in the San Diego Unified School District have a handful of programs designed to keep them active and help ward off childhood obesity.In 2016, the district began it's Healthy Initiative. So far, they've created wellness committees in every school. They also put their IMPACT Program into 20% of the campuses, with plans to expand in the next few years."IMPACT stands for Increased Movement in Physical Activity during Class Time," explains SDUSD's Kate McDevitt. It gets the students 30 extra minutes each week outside, learning easy-to-replicate activities that they can take home."They still have time with their PE teacher, but now classroom teachers can engage their students in station based physical activity," says McDevitt. She says it helps with their focus throughout the day."You can see them light up and really engage in the classroom activities and the earning they’re doing when they have time to move," she says.In addition to the IMPACT program, many schools have local gardens where kids learn about fresh fruits and vegetables. Cafeterias have replaced traditional, high calorie options with foods that are healthier. And some schools have changed the way they do celebrations."We have healthy celebrations," says Ocean Beach Elementary Principal Marco Drapeau. "We still celebrate birthdays and holidays. We still make a big deal out of them. But we don’t hand out the sugary treats."The need for a more health-based approach to school comes at a time when kids' risk of obesity is increasing. According to the CDC, one in five kids in the US is obese. And one in three kids born since 2000 will develop Type 2 Diabetes over the course of their lives.Drapeau says schools are on the front lines in the fight."We’re at a stage right now where we’re competing with this," Drapeau says, holding his hands as if he's holding a phone and watching tv. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The man wanted for a shooting outside of an unlicensed marijuana dispensary in unincorporated El Cajon has been arrested.The San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) issued an arrest warrant for 18-year-old Richard Anthony Bell, of El Cajon, on Dec. 8 in connection with the shooting four days earlier in the 1600 block of N. 2nd Street.A 16-year-old was shot outside of the illegal dispensary and taken to a nearby hospital, where the victim remains and is expected to survive. Members of the U.S. Marshals Service located Bell on Friday at about 11 p.m. inside a hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip. He's being held on million bail for attempted murder and awaiting extradition back to San Diego County.The shooting isn't believed to be related to the dispensary and is thought to be gang-related, SDSO said. 841

Kaitlyn Birchman was supposed to have a preliminary hearing Thursday morning, but she’d already pleaded guilty to forgery of a financial institute. She is set for sentencing on April 3.
