As we shield ourselves in any way possible from the novel coronavirus, there are some parts of the country handling social distancing better than others.“This is a public health problem; it’s not a private health problem,” explained Dr. Bhaskar Chakravorti, who leads the Fletcher Institute for Business at Tufts University. “If I get sick, I could make three other people sick.”Over the past few months, Dr. Chakravorti and his colleagues have been analyzing mobility data from across the country.What did he and his team discover?The top three states who were practicing social distancing the most were New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Nebraska, South Dakota, Arizona were among the worst when it came to practicing social-distancing procedures. Dr. Chakravorti says that has led to higher contagion rates in those areas.“In this post-pandemic moment, each state is going in somewhat a different direction as far as how it's managing the pandemic,” he added.In bigger cities with higher rates of infections, the study found that people responded better to restrictions because they could see the impact the coronavirus was having around them. Dr. Chakravorti hopes public health officials use his findings to make more uniform policies nationwide.“This whole issue of COVID has become a political issue, so even the act of wearing a mask has become a political statement,” he said. “You never want to mix politics with anything. ATLANTA, GA. – The prevalence of adult obesity is increasing in the United States, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).The CDC said Thursday that its 2019 Adult Obesity Prevalence Maps show that 12 states now have an obesity prevalence at or above 35%. Those states include Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. This is up from nine states in 2018 and six states in 2017.The data also shows that racial and ethnic disparities still persist across the nation.A total of 34 states and Washington D.C. had an obesity prevalence of 35% or higher among non-Hispanic Black adults, 15 states had a prevalence of 35% or higher among Hispanic adults, and six states had a prevalence of 35% or higher among non-Hispanic white adults.Addressing the prevalence of obesity in America is more important than ever, because the CDC says obese adults are at heightened risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19. It increases the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death.The CDC says obesity also disproportionately impacts some racial and ethnic minority groups who are also at increased risk of COVID-19.“These disparities underscore the need to remove barriers to healthy living and ensure that communities support a healthy, active lifestyle for all,” wrote the CDC in a press release.While system and environment changes can take time, officials say Americans can take small steps now to maintain or improve their health and protect themselves during the pandemic.“Being active and eating a healthy diet can support optimal immune function and help prevent or manage chronic diseases that worsen outcomes from COVID-19,” the CDC wrote. “These actions, as well as getting enough sleep and finding healthy ways to cope with stress can help with weight maintenance and improve overall health.” 1934

As summer winds down, doctors across the country are warning flu season is fast approaching. Many are watching Australia to see what may happen here when flu season arrives."Where Australia is obviously in the Southern Hemisphere, they're in winter while we’re in summer. We look at their flu season as kind of a six-month predictor of how ours is going to turn out," says Dr. Kenny Banh, the assistant dean of undergraduate medical education at UCSF-Fresno.The number of flu cases in Australia has taken a dramatic dip compared to last year. Dr. Banh says it's unclear if the U.S.'s flu rates will be as low as Australia's.A lot of it has to do with coronavirus precautions that people are taking, Banh hypothesizes."That's what we predict. It's not really so much a change in vaccination rates as much as the social distancing and all the preventative steps of coronavirus that are having the same effect of spreading any disease, including influenza," says Dr. Banh.Doctors say strict measures in Australia to protect people from COVID-19, such as physical distancing, wearing masks and hand washing, have helped prevent the spread of the virus and, incidentally, the flu. Now, some are wondering whether the United States will also see a drop in flu cases this winter."Seeing that they have a drop in influenza, we will certainly have a small influenza season. The issue is Australia is approaching, and the U.S. is approaching coronavirus very different. Their rates are different and they have a much lower per capita infection rate than we have in the U.S. for various reasons," says Dr. Banh.Australia has taken a broader, nationwide approach to protecting people against COVID-19, unlike in the United States, where each state has implemented different restrictions. That's one reason why Dr. Tanya Altmann with the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends every person, 6 months of age and older, gets a flu vaccine."I think this winter, it may be hard to differentiate between the flu and COVID-19 because so many of the symptoms-- cough, fever, aches, chills, are very similar. So by getting the flu vaccine and decreasing the chance your child has influenza, that will help us figure it out," says Dr. Altmann.Dr. Banh says Australia's plummeting flu rates and nationwide protective measures from COVID-19 will hopefully encourage many here in the United States to take the necessary precautions to keep everyone as healthy as possible this winter. 2470

At least 48 people were shot within a 24-hour span on Sunday in New York, capping off a violent Fourth of July weekend, police said.Among those shot, 10 of them were fatal.Since Friday, there were 63 victims of gun violence, continuing the rising trend this summer.Most of the shootings were on Sunday, though there were a number of incidents on Saturday, including one in which no one was hurt. Police opened fire in Astoria, Queens on Saturday night when they spotted an individual shooting at someone else. A suspect was taken into custody in that incident.Police also witnessed violence first hand outside the 40th precinct in the Bronx Saturday night. A bullet pierced the front window of their marked cruiser.While in Brooklyn, a flaming firecracker was tossed inside a patrol car with an officer sitting inside.In a pair of tweets from Manhattan police commanders, the chiefs called out city leaders, saying the city is under attack, and they are demanding action.Former police commissioner Ray Kelly criticized Mayor Bill de Blasio for limiting anti-crime units as “crime is raging out of control in New York City.”Police are searching for suspects in multiple shootings.According to the NYPD, there were 575 incidents with 705 victims from Jan. 1 through July 4 of 2020. There were 369 incidents with 423 victims in the same time period last year. As the US federal government was set to run out of funding at the end of Friday, the House of Representatives and Senate both passed H.J.Res. 107 on Friday, which funds the government through Sunday night. Without approval, the federal government would have entered a shutdown on Saturday.The measure passed through the House by a 320-60 margin. Less than an hour later, the Senate approved the bill by a voice vote. President Donald Trump then signed the bill late Friday night, officially keeping the government open this weekend.Without funding, essential federal government employees would work without pay. Other government employees would be told to stay home.The discussion on funding the government comes as House and Senate leaders are still working on a compromise on a stimulus package. Both sides have stated that legislators won’t leave Washington without approval of a pandemic relief package. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said congressional leaders will continue discussing a stimulus package over the weekend, but no votes will be called before Sunday afternoon. As of now, 0 stimulus checks are in the pandemic relief proposal.The pandemic relief bill would also include supplemental funds for unemployment, and adding money to the Paycheck Protection Program, which helped businesses make payroll early in the pandemic. 1353
