You might just need to walk into a Walmart to experience a Christmas miracle.In recent weeks, anonymous good Samaritans have paid off all layaway items in four Walmart stores in different parts of the country -- a total of more than 0,000.Julie Gates got an unusual surprise in early November when she walked into a Walmart in Derby, Vermont. A man waiting at the register offered to pay for everything she had bought and had on layaway --?and did the same thing for most customers in the store.This mystery man, who called himself "Santa," was apparently the first in a string of similar random acts of kindness in Walmarts across the United States. Since then, Walmart customers at stores in New York, Colorado and Pennsylvania discovered that their bills were taken care of and their layaway items had been paid for.All the mysterious Santas have chosen to remain anonymous -- and each has been generous in their acts of kindness.A Walmart spokesman confirmed to CNN that an anonymous donor paid for ,000 in layaway items at a Uniondale, New York, store while another spent ,000 in a Longmont, Colorado, store and a third shelled out ,000 at a Walmart in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. With November being "National COPD Awareness Month,” experts urge patients who suffer from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease to verify their treatment plans, and to be diligent about COVID-19 precautions.Seventy-one-year-old Janice Cotton is a self-proclaimed "advocate for COPD-ERS." Her advocacy is all over YouTube. She says, “Oh, I think so!.. I think I’m a YouTube star.”Cotton said she likes to tell her story, and while full of personality, her road to advocacy wasn't easy.“In 1997, my mom died from COPD,” Cotton said. “We didn’t know what it was. We had no idea. The last thing she said was, ‘Janice, please stop smoking.’”She said she smoked a pack a day for more than 40 years. Even after being diagnosed with COPD, she says she still smoked.“I didn’t quit smoking when he told me, because when I went into the office to get the test, I was told you’ll be dead in 10 years so I said, ‘What the heck? I may as well keep smoking,’” Cotton said.Eventually, she quit, and now urges others to do the same.Does Cotton still crave tobacco?“Oh no way Jose. Not at all; I don’t crave it,” Cotton said. “I don’t think about it. I tell people who are thinking about smoking, I say, 'Put a straw in your mouth, toothpick, something, anything but a cigarette.'”“This is a treatable disease,” said Dr. Tom Corbridge, pulmonologist, a faculty member at the University of Northwestern near Chicago, and GlaxoSmithKline medical expert. “It is a progressive illness but it's also a treatable illness and the sooner you get in, the sooner you connect with a trusted healthcare provider, the sooner you can get help to restore some of the things you’ve lost.”He says COPD is an umbrella term for chronic lung disease, which include things like emphysema and chronic bronchitis. He says there are 27 million patients with COPD in the U.S. and it's the fourth-leading cause of death.“The main symptom that COPD causes (is) shortness of breath," Corbridge said. It's "hallmark symptom that would be worse with exertion, but also cough, raising of phlegm or mucous and wheezing are really the hallmarks of the disease.”Those symptoms, he said, can be complicated by COVID-19.“The pandemic has impacted my life and my disease management,” Cotton said. “So many of us were scared (of) death and afraid and didn’t want to go anywhere, didn’t want anybody to come see you.”In a recent GlaxoSmithKline study, 83% of people living with COPD agree that COVID-19 has been a wake-up call about the vulnerability of the illness. But, Cotton said she's using her voice to make sure all COPD patients are diligent about things like face masks, hand washing and social distancing. She also recommends having what she calls an "action plan" with your doctor.“I want people to understand and realize that knowledge is power. The more you investigate and research, the better off you’ll be when it comes to managing COPD,” Cotton said.Doctors say the most important aspect is staying in touch with your physicians and staying on top of your symptoms. 3035

Women senators from both parties — all 22 of them — called on Senate leadership to bring about legislation to update and strengthen the procedures available to survivors of all forms of sexual harassment and discrimination in congressional workplaces.The House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation in February aimed at preventing sexual harassment and discrimination in congressional workplaces and helping the survivors of these acts seek justice.The full text of the Senators' letter reads:Dear Leader McConnell and Senator Schumer:We write to express our deep disappointment that the Senate has failed to enact meaningful reforms to the Congressional Accountability Act of 1995. We urge you to bring before the full Senate legislation that would update and strengthen the procedures available to survivors of sexual harassment and discrimination in congressional workplaces.Everyone deserves to work in an environment free from harassment and discrimination. In November, with your leadership, the Senate took an important first step in the effort to end harassment and discrimination in congressional workplaces with the passage of S. Res. 330, which requires anti-harassment and discrimination training for all Senators and staff at least once each Congress. While this training requirement was a significant step to address workplace harassment, there was broad, bipartisan agreement at that time that more had to be done to support survivors.Although the Congressional Accountability Act (CAA) implemented meaningful reforms when it became law in 1995, it continues to require survivors to endure an antiquated dispute resolution process, including a month-long counseling session, forced mediation and a 30-day “cooling off” period before a victim can make a decision whether to pursue justice in a courtroom or continue with administrative procedures. The time has come to rewrite the CAA to provide a more equitable process that supports survivors of harassment and discrimination.The Senate’s inaction stands in stark contrast to the bipartisan effort in the House of Representatives that led to the passage of bipartisan CAA reform legislation in February. The House bill includes a number of important provisions, such as eliminating waiting periods before a victim can take their case to court, increased transparency for awards and settlements, and a requirement that Members of the Senate and House pay for an award or settlement stemming from a case of sexual harassment or discrimination that they personally commit.When the Senate considers CAA reform legislation, we will also have the ability to address an inequity that now exists between House and Senate staff. The House of Representatives passed H. Res. 724 that provides House staff who are survivors of harassment or discrimination access to free legal representation. Senate staff who face similar harassment or discrimination must pay personally for legal representation or represent themselves through complicated legal proceedings. Therefore, the Senate must act quickly to provide Senate staff with the same resources as their House colleagues.Inaction is unacceptable when a survey shows that four out of 10 women congressional staffers believe that sexual harassment is a problem on Capitol Hill and one out of six women in the same survey responded that they have been the survivors of sexual harassment. Survivors who have bravely come forward to share their stories have brought to light just how widespread harassment and discrimination continue to be throughout Capitol Hill. No longer can we allow the perpetrators of these crimes to hide behind a 23-year-old law. It's the same as having a wheelchair, cane or oxygen," Belanger said.For Madison to become a service dog, she had to be put through rigorous training and documentation.Belanger said having Madison with her is a matter of life or death.Belanger has asthma and a severe allergy, which is something Madison has been taught to detect and prevent.Michigan State University Professor David Favre said phony service dogs could be dangerous."The non-service dog animals are not really trained. They are no level near the amount of training real service dogs are. So you will have problems of noise and barking and possible biting. You just never know what these untrained dogs will do," Favre said.Favre said Michigan recently passed a law that made fake service animals illegal."It's a misdemeanor, a low level crime. Possibly 90 days in jail and a fine," Favre said.As for Belanger, she said fake service animals could potentially ruin the good reputations of so many life saving animals. She hopes striker laws are put in place."Those of us who are disabled, we need this. So we can go out and enjoy life just like other people do," Belanger said.While Michigan passed a law making it illegal to lie about a service animal, Favre said there is no state or federal law requiring a person to prove to a business their service animal is legitimate. 2082

"You always gotta do something other than being out and doing bad," said Myron Johnson, a 13-year-old student from Edgewood. Syree Waldon, a 14-year-old from Havre De Grace, hopes he "will inspire other teenagers my age to do it." Johnson said this club will just get bigger, with more people, but also with his focus. He wants to expand to teach etiquette, to help with school work and participate in charity events. "We're just trying to take our passion and basically give them a purpose by doing that. I just believe that one or two hours they spend here could be, it may just that time that will save their lives," said Johnson. Right now, the club is based out of the Edgewood Boys and Girls Club.
