BEIJING, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and high-ranking military officials on Tuesday watched a play honoring an outstanding military archivist.Liu Yiquan had worked as a file clerk and later a consultant at the archives of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) for about 38 years. He had collected more than 830,000 pieces of military archives, which was regarded as a special contribution to the army.Despite being diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2008, Liu continued to work hard. He died on Jan. 28 at the age of 59. BEIJING, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Wednesday said China and the United States should respect each other's core interests and properly handle sensitive affairs in a bid to preserve the sound development of bilateral ties. China and the United States should handle bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term point of view, said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), in a meeting with a U.S. senate delegation. Wu hailed the sound development of China-U.S. relations in 2009,saying it indicated a smooth transition from the Bush administration to the Obama's and the relationship between the countries was progressing well. He labeled the China-U.S. relationship as "one of the world's most important" during the half-hour meeting in the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing. Wu pledged to further the exchanges between the two country's parliaments in a bid to promote strategic mutual trust, mutually beneficial cooperation and friendship between the two peoples. BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Singapore-flagged tanker Pramoni, hijacked off the Somali coast last month, was escorted by a Chinese vessel to the safe waters on Friday, said the Chinese Foreign Ministry."At the request of the Singaporian side, the Chinese 'Chaohu' navy ship successfully conducted the escort mission," said a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry Friday night."All crew onboard the Singapore-flagged chemical tanker are safe and sound and emotionally stable," the statement said, without specifying the route or length of the escort mission.The cargo ship, with five Chinese sailors among the 24 crew onboard, was hijacked by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden on Jan. 1."The Chinese escort mission provided the released vessel with necessary supplies and medical assistance," the statement said.Pramoni's captain thanked the captain and crew of the Chinese vessel helping with the escort.China sent its first escort mission to the Gulf of Aden off Somalia in early 2009. Its fourth mission is now part of a multinational coalition of warships patrolling the pirate-infested area.
BEIJING, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Both output and sales values of China's machinery industry exceeded 10 trillion yuan (1.46 trillion U.S. dollars) last year, the China Machinery Industry Federation (CMIF) said here Wednesday.Output value reached 10.75 trillion yuan in 2009, up 16.07 percent from the year earlier. Sales value was 10.48 trillion yuan, up 16.11 percent,said Wang Ruixiang, the CMIF director.From January to November last year, the sector's profits reached 581.6 billion yuan, up 22.8 percent year on year.The auto sector was the "engine" that drove the overall growth of the industry last year, said Wang, adding nearly 30 percent of output value of the machinery industry was generated by automakers.Wang predicted the machinery sector would reach a 15 percent growth in output and sales values this year, with profits likely to grow 10 percent.
