SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Nurses and healthcare workers gathered Friday morning demanding Palomar Health provide more nurses and PPE to support their staff as they see a surge in patients.Nurses said they are stretched thin and maxed out caring for our community during the pandemic."Palomar claims they took a hit due to the pandemic, but it's the nurses and caregivers who are taking the hit in the from of increased patient loads, unsafe staffing levels and inadequate PPE," ICU nurse Joanne Meza said.She and a group of healthcare workers held red signs reading "Save Lives, Safe Staffing Now."Palomar Health sent ABC 10News a statement stating they received a waiver from the California Department of Public Health Wednesday that would allow Palomar to "assign one ICU nurse to care for up to three patients, depending on patient acuity. The waiver, which only applies to one 12 bed unit which has both intensive and intermediate care patients located in the same area, has not been implemented and is only in preparation for a potential patient surge or reduction in workforce due to sickness."The law states safe ratios are one ICU nurse to two patients.Meza accused the hospital of furloughing employees while they knew the impact the pandemic would have.She also accused the hospital of commingling COVID and non-COVID patients. Palomar said that is "completely false. As a healthcare system, it is irresponsible to instill fear in our community. These false allegations by the union are frightening and endanger the health and safety of our community by discouraging people with serious conditions from seeking medical care."Palomar also said they always meet or exceed PPE requirements. 1698
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of San Diego's most recognized dive bars has been sold to two local cousins.The Aero Club's property was purchased, along with its neighboring property occupied by the t-shirt company Dyno Brand, for .4 million by cousins Chad Cline and Jason "Rocky" Nichols. The bar, formerly owned by Chinatown Bar & Grill's Bill Lutzius, will largely remain unchanged with its dive bar-style in tact, according to Cline. We figured if he moved it, it would get ruined," Cline said. "We don’t want to change anything, unless something breaks."And the two aren't walking in without experience. Between the pair, they have roles running Midway District's Banzai Bar, Little Italy's Waterfront Bar & Grill, Point Loma's Harbortown Pub and Club Marina, Lakeside's Eastbound Bar & Grill, La Mesa's The Hills, and the Gaslamp's Werewolf.The purchase itself was an easy price tag to swallow for Cline and Nichols. Cline said the two are dive bar fans and Aero Club held a special spot for them as they worked nearby at Waterfront."[Aero Club] was always kind of the spot that we felt was similar to what Waterfront was," Cline said. "We’re dive bar fans. All the spots that we’re associated with are kind of dive bars as well."And, of course, there's the Aero Clubs massive assortment of whiskey at the bar — which isn't going anywhere."I started liking it even more," Cline joked of when Aero Club started collecting hundreds of varieties of whiskey. He added if any changes were to come, the portfolio of whiskeys could expand."That's our goal with the whole thing is to continue it and not ruin it," he said. "‘I think what Aero Club is in not because of me or Rocky but because of Bill and previous owners."Dyno Brand is set to move from the neighboring property on April 1, Cline said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One of San Diego's biggest events of the year is here! Well, sort of. This year, because of COVID-19 restrictions, Comic-Con is not at the San Diego Convention Center. It is only happening virtually. Because of that, San Diego's hospitality industry is suffering a considerable loss.The 51st Comic-Con International is called Comic-Con @Home. This means, there are no crowds, cos-players, or lines around San Diego's Gaslamp District. The good part is that all panels are free for attendees. The bad part?"We're losing 100% of the Comic-Con business," Daniel Drane, owner of The Field Irish Pub, said.For the last 22 years, Drayne has operated the establishment on 5th Avenue, a street usually packed with visitors during the pop entertainment convention. He says every year, regulars from around the world have drinks and hold meet-ups at his bar. Not this year."We're not just losing business, but there's a loss of some of the people that we've actually known for years," Drayne said.Comic-Con's COVID-shutdown does not just impact Downtown San Diego. Its effects trickle down to the rest of the city and the county.In one week, 'the Con' usually drives in 0 million to the region and fills up almost all of the county's 64,000 hotel rooms. But now those numbers are a thing of the past."Our current strategy is a strategy of survival," Robert Rauch, CEO of RAR Hospitality, said.The hotelier says San Diego County's annual average hotel occupancy is 77%. July is singlehandedly the best month of the year, at 90%. But with COVID-19 this year, it is barely at 40%."It's deplorable to go from the best month of the year, to if it weren't for the PPP loans, we'd all be losing money this month," Rauch said.With cancellations, no business, or group travel, Rauch says San Diego's lodging industry is solely surviving on stay-cationers and a handful of leisure travelers.But as the Fighting Irish say,"You can't throw in the towel. You gotta fight back," Drayne said.Drayne is continuing his sidewalk cafe and curbside dining to make it through the dismal numbers."I hope that this COVID goes away and never returns," Drayne chuckled. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors renewed their concerns over jets rattling their neighborhood less than a week before the F-35 arrives at Marine Corps. Air Station Miramar.The same concerns from University City neighbors voiced in letters to Miramar date back to at least 2012, according to MCAS Miramar Director of Communications Capt. Matthew Gregory.READ RELATED: Neighbors concerned with F-35 coming to MCAS MiramarHe pulled out a map of San Diego County's air space. He pointed to a gray square and said that entire area over the base up to 10,000 feet is controlled by the Federal Aviation Administration.Right off the end of the flight deck sits University City, where tragedy struck more than a decade ago. An F/A-18 crashed after having engine trouble, killing four and destroying two homes.With the F-35 coming to MCAS Miramar next week, neighbors are concerned the single-engine jet poses a higher risk.Capt. Gregory says the aircraft is arguably safer, "it is much easier to diagnose any issues and fix those issues."Neighbors are also concerned where the F-35 will fly, "the goal is to have flights as much as possible follow the approved flight paths," San Diego Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry said.She was referencing a map with different colored flight paths. The Marine Corps. stated that map is from 2005, and shows average flight paths based on 5,000 annual operations. They said the map is disproportional and it is solely meant to illustrate the average flight paths for land developers.That came as news to Bry, "I don't think the community understands that. They understand that these are the flight paths they will take."When it comes to noise, "the Navy and Marine Corps have been flying F-18s here in San Diego for the past 30-35 years, so it's going to be very noticeable when the F-35s get here and start taking off," Capt. Gregory said.He added the Navy flew more jets when they ran the base.Overall, the F-35s are expected to make the area slightly quieter.Neighbors are having a meeting later this month, where a representative from Bry's office as well as MCAS Miramar will be present. 2130
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New data shows that home sales in Southern California could be dipping, while sales in San Diego County are on the rise. The data from CoreLogic shows that the sale of existing housing sold in Southern California in April of 2018 was down nearly four percent since March of 2018.In San Diego County, however, home sales increased by more than five percent in April. Likewise, year-over-year home sales across the county increased by more than two percent.
