SAN YSIDRO, Calif., (KGTV) -- San Diego community leaders responded to comments made by the President, where he threatened to close down the US-Mexico border indefinitely if Mexico does not handle the wave of asylum seekers coming into the United States. Paola Avila with the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce is part of a nearly 100 person joint-delegation from San Diego and Baja California, going to Mexico City this Sunday, to champion US-Mexico relations. "Closing the border is not an option. Neither a portion nor all of it," Avila said. San Ysidro Port of Entry is the busiest land border crossing in the Western Hemisphere. More than 70,000 vehicles and 25,000 pedestrians cross into the United States every day.President Trump recently tried to direct .5 Billion from the Pentagon to build his campaign promise wall. But that was blocked by Senate Democrats and 12 Republicans. Now Baja-Cali business leaders fear the President will force a port and border shutdown. "Closing the border will be a profit-making operation," the President said. Not so, said Jason Wells with the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce. As the Executive Director, he advocates for 650 businesses that have a zipcode one and a half miles from the border. He will be joining Avila on Sunday, in the advocacy delegation. He knows first hand the severe consequences of a shutdown. "Our daily lives are affected by the border crossings and how long that takes. So we certainly wish that not to be something to be toyed with," Wells said. When migrants rushed the border last November, San Ysidro Port of Entry was shut down for just five hours. In that short time, the city lost .3 million in revenue. This does not include the economic impacts to neighboring Chula Vista, National City, or San Diego.ABC News consultant John Cohen, who held a senior role at Homeland Security, said the last time there was a border shutdown was during the Reagan administration. He said it caused severe economic harm to both countries. "History tells us when you shut down the southern border, it does little to stop to flow of illegal drugs into the US. You do cause significant economic harm to the US," Cohen told ABC News.Especially in this global economy, Avila said, where pesos and dollars are swiftly exchanged, and where commerce and culture are deeply intertwined. SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego Fire-Rescue is on scene of a brush fire burning in San Ysidro Monday afternoon. According to department spokeswoman Mónica Mu?oz, the fire sparked near State Route 905 west and Caliente Avenue in an area near San Ysidro High School. The fire burned about one and a half acres before the forward rate of spread was stopped. No structures were threatened and no one was injured, according to Mu?oz.Three San Diego Fire-Rescue engines and two federal fire brush engines and a helicopter team responded to the blaze. (CNS) -- Orange County Jail inmates suing the county for a variety of issues related to their housing filed a motion Thursday demanding an improvement in their meals, a resumption of visits and access to religious services, all of which have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.Orange County Jail inmates recently conducted a short-lived hunger strike as they demanded a resumption of hot meals, which were restored for a short time at some jails."Presently, most prisoners except those in Theo Lacy, get soybean mystery meat (baloney) sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and dinner," the motion reads."This food is inedible and must be supplemented with snacks from the commissary. Those who cannot afford snacks go hungry."A GoFundMe campaign is raising money for inmates to buy snacks from the commissary, according to the motion.The litigation also alleges that inmates are receiving the wrong Jewish diets, including sandwiches during Passover when they are not allowed to eat bread.Visits from family have been suspended since March and the inmates demand that something to be done to provide some sort of visits that could be done under the state's social distancing guidelines.The litigation also complains of a restriction on religious visits or services.Inmate Kendall Cole, who has been in custody since 2016, said in a declaration said he used to receive Kosher meals, "but I am now served 'Halal' meals. That is a different religious diet. I am Jewish and need Kosher meals."Cole said he recently testified that jail guards gave him a weapon and was instructed to attack Joshua Waring, the son of a former "Real Housewives of Orange County" cast member, who recently was released from jail following a plea deal for attempted murder.Cole said he was sentenced to 15 days "in the hole" in connection with the attack and that legal materials he received through the law library were "confiscated" along with his "religious head covering (Kippah) and my Jewish calendar."Cole said he was "housed with Joshua Waring when the guards shot a pepper ball into our room. This caused choking and tearing to the dozen or so prisoners even though we were in our housing units. The guards threatened us and told us not to say anything to the investigators. We did not say anything because we feared these threats. We all know of the subsequent attacks on Joshua Waring."Waring is a plaintiff in the litigation.The Orange County Sheriff's Department issued this statement regarding the allegations:"Since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, the sheriff's department has worked closely with the Board of State and Community Corrections and the Orange County Health Care Agency to meet all health and safety guidelines for inmates and staff, as required by law. Saudi Arabia has confirmed the death of missing Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in an announcement on Saudi state TV.The Saudis have set up a commission that will investigate Khashoggi's death and will have one month to release a report, according to state TV. The commission will consist of national security officials, the foreign ministry and the interior ministry.Discussions between Khashoggi and those who met him during arrival at the consulate in Istanbul led to an argument and physical altercation that led to his death, the state TV report said.A total of 18 Saudi nationals have now been detained for investigation, the Saudi Press Agency reported.In the announcement on Saudi State TV, it said a royal order has been issued to release Maj.
