BERN, SWITZERLAND, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Parliamentary leaders of China and Switzerland on Saturday exchanged views on bilateral ties, parliamentary exchanges and mutual concerns and agreed on closer exchanges between legislative bodies of the two nations for better Sino-Swiss ties.Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), expressed satisfaction over the significant progress in Sino-Swiss relationship during the recent years at a meeting with Pascale Bruderer, president of the National Council of Swiss Federal Assembly, and Erika Forster- Vannini, president of the Council of States of Swiss Federal Assembly.The development of Sino-Swiss relationship has brought substantial interests to both people and China looks forward to working together with Switzerland to further develop the comprehensive friendship and mutual-beneficial cooperation, Wu said. BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China's exports surged by 48.5 percent year on year in May, while the imports climbed 48.3 percent, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) announced Thursday.The growth rate for exports was 18.1 percentage points up from the figure for April, and the import growth rate dipped slightly from 49.7 percent reported in April.Exports totalled 131.76 billion U.S. dollars in May, said a statement on the GAS website, adding imports topped 112.23 billion U.S. dollars.Total foreign trade value rose 48.4 percent from a year earlier to 243.99 billion U.S. dollars in May. ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in the massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 1,144, with 600 still missing as of 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the provincial department of civil affairs said late Thursday.The toll rose from 1,117 on Wednesday.Overnight downpours triggered new floods and mudslides to the mudslide-devastated town of Zhouqu in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, leaving three people missing.Floods also have left eight people dead and eight others missing in two counties in Gannan's neighboring city of Longnan on Thursday.

BEIJING, July 29 (Xinhua) -- China's work safety authorities will investigate and crack down on manufacturers operating illegally in the coming three months, the Work Safety Committee Office under the State Council, China's Cabinet, said Wednesday.Accidents in manufacturing plants have dropped this year, but illegal operations still pose a grave threat to workplace safety, accounting for about 55 percent of the accidents above "relatively major" level, said a statement from the office.An accident above "relatively major" level referred to a case in which three or more deaths are involved, ten or more are seriously injured or an economic loss above 10 million yuan (1.48 million U.S. dollars) is caused.The crackdown beginning from Aug. 1 will focus sectors including mines, transportation, construction sites, manufacturers of dangerous chemicals, fireworks plants and smelting sector, said the statement.Illegal operations mainly refer to manufacturers that run without permits or run with insufficient or overdue permits and against safety production laws and codes.

BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), on Sunday night called for more quality shows from private arts troupes to contribute to the development and the prospering of the country's socialist culture.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks after watching a Shaoxing opera that ended the three-week show season by China's private arts troupes in Beijing.Shaoxing opera is a traditional Chinese local opera originating in east China's Zhejiang Province.Li stressed that privately-owned arts troupes can survive only when their plays satisfy the market and the public.He said he hoped private arts troupes would produce more competitive shows with a positive and healthy theme and grow stronger by winning public support.Private arts troupes must be treated equally in terms of professional evaluation, social security coverage and support of artistic creation as are those state-owned cultural companies, he said.
