SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- You can add San Diego to the list of places where a mysterious metal monolith has popped up.The mysterious object was spotted earlier this week at the Scripps Ranch Marketplace shopping center on Scripps Poway Parkway.As word of the monolith spread on social media, many people gathered around the object to take photos.There is no word on how the monolith got to the shopping center, but it has since been removed as of Wednesday morning.ABC 10News learned a social media video shows a group of teens removing the monolith and carrying it away. 573

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Underused land owned by San Diego's Metropolitan Transit Service could help address the region's need for affordable housing — though not entirely.That's according to a new report by the think-tank Circulate San Diego, which suggests nearly 60 acres of MTS-owned land, including parking lots and structures, could better serve the community as new homes."Empty and underutilized parking lots are a stark and visible demonstration of public lands being underutilized. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While many holiday events will go on this season despite the pandemic, one San Diego tradition is taking a break this year.The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights, scheduled for Dec. 13 and 20, has been canceled this year. Organizers said the decision was made due to the rise in coronavirus cases."We are sad to announce that due to the rise in COVID-19 cases, this year’s San Diego Bay Parade of Lights is cancelled," a statement on the parade's website read. "We are disappointed that the parade cannot take place this year but we would like to do our part to minimize the spread of the virus. Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season. See you next year!"The parade, which was looking forward to its 49th year, routinely brings crowds of more than 100,000 San Diegans to the bay over two weekends to watch as nearly 100 boats sail through the bay, decked out in colorful lights and decorations."Our number one priority is safety and this year large crowds associated with the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights are not advisable due to the Covid-19 pandemic," said Parade Chairman Larry Baumann. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With scorching temperatures across San Diego County, crowds flocked to the beach. While this is typical for a San Diego summer, there is one major difference in 2020.“We’re very conscious about crowds,” said Encinitas local Jennifer Marakovits.She and her husband Joe visited Del Mar Saturday afternoon. The two brought their own masks and sat watching the crowds from a distance.“It’s a matter of life or death and wearing a mask to me, it’s worth it,” said Joe.RELATED: Del Mar hiring more officials to enforce mask policies, ,000 fine possibleNearby, a Sheriff's deputy walked around. This is a new addition to the area. Del Mar’s city council voted to spend ,000 through the next four months to bring in extra deputies to help with mask and social distancing enforcement. Prior to this decision, one single deputy worked at a time, and with thousands of people visiting every day, the decision was made to help enforce county orders. The deputies will work a few four-hour shifts a week, changing the time, place, and location depending on the day.The deputy out Saturday afternoon held a stack of informational pamphlets and a box of face masks, which he handed out to anyone not wearing a mask who passed him. The goal is to keep the extra deputy taking educational actions similar to this, however, they could issue a citation that could cost up to ,000 for a violation.
