LONG ISLAND — Mini horses visited health care workers at Katz Women’s Hospital on Long Island as an expression of gratitude toward the overtaxed medical staff.HorseAbility, a Long Island organization, brought the horses to the hospital for the visit on world gratitude day.Normally, the horses work with people with special needs, but the team at HorseAbility felt health care workers battling COVID-19 could use some time with the horses.“They say there are so many benefits in pet therapy, it doesn’t matter what the animal is the result is the same, it’s a reduction in stress,” said Michael Goldberg, Executive Director at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.Employees became emotional, sharing how the calmness of the horses was reminding them to remain calm.This story originally reported by Keith Lopez on PIX11.com. 830
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Health officials say the number of coronavirus cases in California is surging to the highest level since the start of the pandemic. The California Department of Health and Human Services reported more than 15,000 cases Saturday and another 14,000 cases on Sunday. They come even before the Thanksgiving holiday that has many health officials concerned. A curfew took effect Saturday requiring people to stay home from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. affecting most Californians, and Los Angeles is on the verge of an even tougher lockdown. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge has ordered the release of a Southern California man who spent 19 years in prison for a gang-related shooting. The judge on Friday approved a re-sentencing request from prosecutors for Emon Barnes. The 34-year-old Compton man is expected to be freed next week. Barnes was 15 when he was arrested for a Compton shooting. He was sentenced to 40 years to life for attempted murder. Barnes says he was home with his mother at the time of the shooting. A victim who identified him has since recanted. His attorneys say they will try to have his conviction vacated. 594
LOS ANGELES -- Fire crews are on scene after a small brush fire broke out in a Los Angeles neighborhood Wednesday night. The fire broke out just before 6:30 p.m. in Pacific Palisades. The fire was originally reported as a half-acre fire. In an alert sent out by the Los Angeles Fire Department, officials said there was no threat to structures.
