SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Major decisions that could boost - or deal a real blow - to Republican candidates running for state offices about to be made in San Diego. It's because the California G.O.P. Convention kicks off Friday at the Sheraton Harbor Island. About 1,000 Republican delegates will be voting on a variety of endorsements for this year's ballot.G.O.P. gubernatorial candidates like Travis Allen and John Cox will attend, hoping to earn enough delegate votes for the party's endorsement for this year's election. The party is focussed only on state offices and initiatives - such as repealing the gas tax, said Cynthia Bryant, the state party's executive director. This is San Diego's second major political convention leading up to the June primary. The Democrats held their statewide convention here in February - with a who's who of national politicians. It was also the site of major news when the party declined to endorse Sen. Dianne Feinstein in her bid for re-election.The big difference for Republicans is that the party will not be taking up major federal issues like gun rights and immigration, Bryant said. The state party also won't be adopting a platform. Instead, Republicans will be focussing on the big decisions in the state - like repealing the recent 12 cent per gallon gas tax hike. They'll also be endorsing candidates for Governor, Lt. Governor, and attorney general. Still, Thad Kousser, who chairs the political science department at UC San Diego, says a lot of the decisions made could shape whether the Republicans can recruit new members. "Is this going to be a red meat crowd that really responds only to the visceral issues of immigrations? Or is it going to be a more strategic party that responds to issues that could help Republicans expand their base?" Kousser said. There are some closely watched congressional elections in San Diego County, including who will replace Republican Congressman Darrell Issa in the 49th district, and whether G.O.P Rep. Duncan Hunter can defend his seat in the 50th. Those endorsements could come later on. The convention runs through Sunday. 2157

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Memorial Day Weekend kicked off Friday night on the USS Midway. As a part of their Legacy Week, they had their annual benefit concert. This year, Daughtry took the stage. Kevin Beam is a big fan and made sure to buy his tickets early, “you got Memorial Day Weekend, Daughtry and beautiful San Diego”. People filled the top deck of the Midway. Ahead of the concert, the USS Midway Foundation presented three ,800 checks to different local charities. The night served as a way for people to remember and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Penny Erickson was especially grateful for the event Friday, “I’m from a military family my dad was from Pearl Harbor so it means a lot to me.” Chuck Erickson is a volunteer for the USS Midway and a veteran. Friday night, he tells 10News he’s making sure he is grateful all weekend long, “a lot of people lost their lives giving us the freedom we have today”. The USS Midway will have there Legacy Week events through Memorial Day. 1009

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In San Diego Comic-Con's first foray as an online-only event, fans experienced some benefits and pitfalls of a virtual convention. While fans had arguably the most access to Comic-Con content ever, there were still some aspects that couldn't be recreated digitally. At the same time, that's all right. Fans afraid there would be no convention whatsoever still got to enjoy the annual pop-culture celebration. With that said, there are some things fans may like to see again even at an in-person convention — or hope to avoid.RELATED:Videos and Special FX: Perks of San Diego Comic-Con going virtualPHOTOS: Best cosplay from San Diego Comic-ConSan Diego's hospitality industry suffers from Comic-Con@HomeWhat worked: PanelsFor the first time in Comic-Con history, every attendee had the opportunity to see any of SDCC's hundreds of panels. No waiting in Hall H's line. No attending an earlier panel to save a seat for a later event. Every panel was streamed on Comic-Con's website and most were made available on YouTube afterward for fans to catch. Exclusive content aired during panels also made their way onto the internet arguably faster than previous years. While the glitz of seeing stars, artists, and writers in person was missing, the heart of enjoying a panel for its presentation was still there. What didn't: ExclusivesAdmittedly, Comic-Con isn't just about exclusive merchandise. But many attendees enjoy being able to score gear that you'll only get at SDCC — for resale or to keep. However, when it came to exclusives, internet connection and website servers were at the will of how many people logged onto their site. So when something was highly sought after, websites saw a lot of traffic — sometimes too much. In the case of several popular merchandisers — like Funko, Mondo, or Hasbro — exclusives often sold out quickly, sometimes before the convention even occurred. What worked: "Off-site" experiencesOff-site experiences outside the convention center have become as much of Comic-Con as the exhibit hall inside the center. With the convention online, some exhibitors took the opportunity to host some unique games and activities on their own websites. FX Unlocked showcased its lineup of FX shows with games, trivia, and digital extras, while Amazon held its own virtual con to showcase its products and Amazon Prime shows. FutureTechLive! also put together a virtual World Builders activation for users to unleash their imagination. What didn't: CosplayOne of the best parts of Comic-Con is seeing everyone dressed up as their favorite characters waltzing around downtown San Diego. Where else can you run into Kirk and Spock or Batman enjoying a bite to eat in broad daylight? While the convention did its best to showcase cosplayers online with a "masquerade ball" via Tumblr, it just isn't quite the same as being at the event in-person. What worked: Connecting with fansHosting Comic-Con online ensured fans can connect with their favorite comic book writers, artists, and even entertainers. Without having to manage a tight schedule of going location to location for panels and events, users could simply log on and watch a panel, win some free swag in some cases, or reach out to comic book writers and artists for commissions or to purchase their work. No walking through a packed Artist Alley or standing in line for a free t-shirt — though some may argue that's part of the appeal. What didn't: Recreating being thereSDCC made several activities available online ahead of the convention, like signs and badges to print out to dress your home for the event. A virtual exhibit floor was also offered online and while fun, was a bit tricky to navigate on your phone. Though it was great to offer those activities for fans, nothing can really recreate that feeling of walking through the halls of the convention center or visiting your favorite comic book artists. 3915

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local health officials said Thursday a new case of vaping-related lung injury has been reported, as county leaders prepare to consider new vaping regulations. So far in San Diego, there have been 43 confirmed cases of vaping-associated lung injury with three cases under investigation. There haven't been any local deaths, but all patients have had to be hospitalized. Those affected range in age from 17 to 70 years old, according to the county. The CDC has said that vitamin E acetate and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are closely linked with e-cigarette, or vaping, associated lung injury. CDC recommends people avoid using THC-containing e-cigarettes or vaping products.RELATED: San Diego woman hospitalized with vaping illness warns others“Vaping-related lung injuries continue to be reported in the region and that’s concerning,” said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. As of Jan. 7, the CDC has reported 2,602 hospitalizations or deaths from sudden and severe lung injuries associated with vaping. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors is set to discuss several potential local actions on regulating e-cigarette devices during a Jan. 14 meeting. Those ordinances include a ban on flavored tobacco sale and distribution, device moratorium, and restricting e-cigarette smoking to outdoor areas at restaurant. The ordinances would apply to unincorporated parts of the county.“As stewards of public health; we have a responsibility to raise awareness and act in the best interest of the public to protect them,” said Supervisor Fletcher. “Right now we simply do not know enough about the chemicals being consumed and their impacts. We are acting in a similar fashion to other jurisdictions in California, we are acting with an abundance of caution.” A second meeting on the ordinances will be held on Jan. 28. If the ordinances pass, they will go into effect July 1. 1902
