European scientists say they have caught a rare fish they describe as a "living fossil."According to the BBC, scientists for the European Union's Institute for Sea and Atmosphere captured a 5-foot long frilled shark in the waters off the coast of southern Portugal.Frilled sharks are rarely seen by humans, and typically live thousands of feet below the ocean's surface. This particular shark was caught at a depth of 2,300 feet.According to Fox News, there have only been three recorded sightings of frilled sharks in the past 10 years. The fish was spotted twice near the coast of Japan in 2007 and 2017, and in Australia in 2014.  671

ESCONDIDO, Calif., (KGTV) — Farmers in North County are reacting to the President’s new immigration plans. 10News spoke to an avocado farmer out of Fallbrook at the San Diego County Farm Bureau annual luncheon in Escondido Saturday morning.Charles Wolk owns Bejoca Company. The avocado growers said long hours in the hot sun is not easy work. He said farm work requires skill. “Farm workers are not unskilled,” Wolk said, contrasting the President’s definition of skilled laborers.On Thursday, President Trump said he wants a “big portion” of immigrants to come into the United States through a merit system. Points will be awarded to immigrants who are English-speaking, highly skilled workers like doctors and engineers, and to those who have jobs already lined up. These immigrants are not people who could become Wolk’s employees. “What he said is not going to help fill the need for agriculture labor,” Wolk said, especially because many of his employees, who have been with him for more than 30 years, are aging out.“They are getting older, and they’re literally retiring. And there’s nothing coming in behind them, whether it’s immigrant or people in the United States,” Wolk said. “We just don’t have any relief in sight,” San Diego County Farm Bureau Executive Director, Eric Larson, said. “Our challenge is convincing the President and the members of Congress that agriculture is a skilled labor, and we need those workers here.”Wolk has looked into other avenues of finding workers. For example, there is the H-2A Visa, which allows immigrants to come to the United States, specifically for seasonal agricultural work. It requires employees to provide free housing, food, and in some cases, transportation. “The H-2A Program is cumbersome and expensive, especially for a small employer,” Wolk said. So at this point, he says he has no Plan B.But Wolk is optimistic. He believes legislators will realize the importance of American agriculture. Even foreign engineers cannot survive without food in their stomachs.“It might push out the requirements for the engineer,” Wolk laughed. “If you don’t have someone to produce the food we eat.”At this point, there is no indication that a provision for farm laborers will be added to the President’s plan. 2266

(KGTV)- While many business owners were forced to make the painful decision to shut down during the pandemic, some still took the risk of opening for the first time.Samantha and Weston Nawrocki weren’t going to let the COVID-19 pandemic stop their goal of opening a new café locally.“For coffee, the great thing is most people treat it even non-pandemic as a to go item,” said Weston Nawrocki.The couple has a coffee shop and roasting location in Rancho Bernardo, but their new business is up and running in their own city, Escondido, just six blocks away from their home.Manzanita Roasting Company opened Friday inside The Grand, which is home to the historic Ritz Theater, now newly renovated.“I’ve been a resident since I was a kid,” said Samantha Nawrocki. “I always drove by and said ‘I wish something would go in there’ and now we’re in there.”The City of Escondido shut down a couple of lanes on Grand Avenue and helped businesses transition to provide outdoor services under the current COVID-19 restrictions.Now, more new businesses are opening on busy Grand Avenue.“We have Daydream, which is a lovely gift store, we also have Off The Grid Surplus, let’s say you’re an off-road enthusiast of the jeep crowd, that’s definitely going to be your place,” said Amber Tarrac, the Deputy Director of Economic Development for the City of Escondido. “We also have Good Omen Mead, a meadery which is amazing stuff to try.”Tony Pepperoni Pizzeria and Barrel republic are currently still under construction, but Tarrac said they should be opening on Grand Avenue sometime soon, although a specific date is not clear.“We’re really excited about them, they’ve been under construction for a while,” she said.Tarrac said it’s not just Grand Avenue doing well with new businesses; from March 1st through November 23rd, Tarrac said hundreds of new businesses opened across the city.“We’ve had 696 new businesses; these are new permanent, in city businesses,” she said. “The bulk of those businesses are actually home occupations, so we’ve had quite a few folks that have decided to become entrepreneurs and start different businesses out of their home. We also had a number of retailers and restaurants open up.”The Nawrocki’s say they were able to hire ten new employees right before the holidays. Federal prosecutors Friday requested that Donald Trump's former personal attorney Michael Cohen receive "a substantial term of imprisonment" for various finance-related crimes.In separate filings, prosecutors from special counsel Robert Mueller's office and the Southern District of New York outlined their cases for Cohen's future.In August, Cohen pleaded guilty to eight federal crimes after being charged by Manhattan federal prosecutors. Those included tax fraud, making false statements to a bank and campaign-finance violations tied to his work for Trump, including payments Cohen made or helped orchestrate that were designed to silence women who claimed affairs with the then-presidential candidate. Trump has denied those claims."After cheating the IRS for years, lying to banks and to Congress, and seeking to criminally influence the Presidential election, Cohen's decision to plead guilty -- rather than seek a pardon for his manifold crimes -- does not make him a hero," prosecutors for the southern district wrote.In its filing, Mueller's office says that Cohen took "significant steps" to help the investigation has accepted responsibility for his crimes. FALLBROOK (KGTV) - One person is dead after she was hit by a vehicle while walking along the shoulder of a road in Fallbrook with her husband.CHP officers say the 60-year-old woman was walking with her husband just after 5 p.m. northbound on the east shoulder in the 2700 block of Gird Road north of Laketree Drive. An approaching pickup truck heading northbound left the roadway and struck the woman. The truck stopped for a moment before fleeing the scene northbound on Gird Rd.North County Fire Protection District and CHP responded and crews began life saving measures at the scene, but the woman was pronounced dead. Her 60-year-old husband was not injured.The truck involved in the crash is described as an older model pickup truck that's dark in color. The truck will likely have damage to the right front side.Investigators were reviewing surveillance footage from the area to learn more about what happened.Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspected vehicle or information about the crash is asked to call CHP at 858-637-3800. 1060
