SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid fears of post-election unrest, parishioners at San Diego's oldest church are meeting the possibility of violence with prayer.It's the morning of the election and Peggy Stolberg is hoping to cast a vote for peace — through prayer."It always seems like prayers are the answers to many things," said Stolberg.Stolberg spent part of her morning in the sanctuary of the Mission San Diego de Alcala, her church for the last 35 years."I pray for the unity of our country. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman is dead after being hit by a car in Mid-City Monday night. The crash happened around 6 p.m. on the 4600 block of El Cajon Boulevard. San Diego Police say the woman, who is in her 60s, was pinned beneath the car before an ambulance arrived. She was later pronounced dead. Police say employees at a nearby auto body shop ran over, using a jack to lift the car off the woman. The driver is cooperating, police say. 448

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego woman said a scammer used the military to trick her into paying for a phony apartment rental."We were looking to move during this tough time, which is kind of already more stressful than it normally would be,” said Maci, who declined to use her last name.She searched various websites and thought she found a good deal on Craigslist for a place downtown on Market Street. Through email, the supposed owner said his name was Matthew Sherman, a sergeant stationed at Naval Station Rota in Spain. He said he was looking for a long-term renter and sent Maci a link with photos and an Airbnb site that looked legitimate."Along with the presence of the military, presence of the Airbnb website, I felt safe in the process,” Maci said.She exchanged emails and text messages to get more information about the apartment. She wired ,600.“There was this sense of pressure because I was so worried that this great deal was going to disappear,” Maci said.It turns out that the listing was fake. Maci said the profile photo used by the man pretending to be Sgt. Sherman was a real soldier who passed away in an accident in 2018. “It really just sad heavy on my heart because this person's family doesn't realize his photo's being used for criminal activity,” Maci said.When Team 10 contacted “Matthew Sherman,” the response via email was similar to what Maci received. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An autopsy performed on the teenager known as McSkillet is providing details about his mental state before he crashed his McLaren on Interstate 805 in San Diego, killing a mother and daughter.Trevor Heitmann, 18, died on August 23 when he drove the wrong way on the freeway in University City at 100 miles an hour. Heitmann’s sports car crashed into an SUV, killing Aileen Pizarro, 43, and her 12-year-old daughter Aryana. The California Highway Patrol reported that video of the impact shows Heitmann did not attempt to swerve before hitting the SUV.The San Diego County Medical Examiner said Heitmann suffered 11 types of blunt force injuries in the crash. Toxicology tests did not detect any alcohol or common drugs, doctors said. Heitmann's death was ruled accidental by officials. He was banned earlier this year from trading skins with other players by the video game's developer, Valve. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman is on a mission to help minority mothers through their pregnancy.When Nikki Helms isn't hosting community dinner or volunteering her time to help Haitian immigrants navigate racism in America, she's walking families through the miracle of childbirth. Helms found her calling in 2014. "I had heard about these different women who had had these experiences where these women had asked for help and they weren't paid attention to," Helms said about how the hospital could be a dangerous place for minority moms.She was faced with a decision: "You could go to either nursing school or to midwifery school and I felt that midwifery school was a way that I could really make an appreciable difference right away."Helms said only four out of 75 San Diego County midwives are Black."I joke about it now that I am 25% of the black midwives in San Diego County," she said with a chuckle.The small segment is making a huge difference, providing culture-sensitive care during pregnancy.A friend told Helms to start a GoFundMe to raise money for a birth center. Helms said she started the page in January and at first it started out slow.Then friends contacted social media influencers and Helms said it was a huge snowball effect from there.She broke 0,000 this week and is elated by the support. "They hear my truth and they believe in my dream and they believe in me and that's just amazing," Helms said tearing up.
