SAN YSIDRO (KGTV) -- Local businesses are feeling a one-two punch after the border closure for non-essential travel was extended during the coronavirus pandemic.The owner of El Rincon Restaurant in San Ysidro said the extension is devastating for business."I just found out a couple hours ago that they were going to do this, I had absolutely no clue," Owner Edgar Alaniz said. He was looking forward to the reopening of the border planned for June 22, now pushed back for a third time to July 21.Alaniz said he didn't want to be mad because all of this is to protect our health and safety but it's extremely difficult for businesses to survive after being closed for three months. Alaniz said about 75-80% of their customers come from Mexico. Currently, the business is only seeing about 20% of those customers. "That's what happens when the border is closed for three months, people find different ways and for a restaurant like me, they find a different restaurant," he said.He hopes when the border reopens to welcome them back.Alaniz said they closed the restaurant March 15, and continued with take-out service. Just last week they reopened for dine-in service with protective procedures, like masks and extra cleaning, in place.Alaniz hopes to see more of his neighbors reopening as well, saying he only knows of one other locally owned restaurant in San Ysidro reopening so far.He is confident we will all get through this, "we move forward with strength and a bright vision, that's what it is and that's what it will always be about."The news comes as the U.S., Canada, and Mexico agreed to extend their agreement to keep their borders closed to non-essential travel through July 21 during the coronavirus pandemic."This is an important decision that will keep people in both of our countries safe,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday. 1870

(KGTV) - The standoff that had part of an east county neighborhood shut down is now overSan Diego's Sheriff's Department responded to an individual that was under duress on Graves Ave in Santee around 7 p.m.Deputies say the man was armed and waved a gun at them at one point when they had him surrounded in a field.The intersection of Graves Ave and Prospect Ave was blocked off for several hours as negotiators tried talk to the man.The man surrendered just after 11 p.m. according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department. 544

Developers of East County’s Fanita Ranch project will try to win over residents at a meeting Wednesday night. 10News first covered the housing proposal in 1999. Fanita Ranch would bring nearly 3,000 homes, a school, parks, and open space. Councilman Stephen Houlahan says the project would bring more money to Santee. “The city needs to grow; that’s just how it is.” Some residents oppose adding more people and traffic. “The traffic getting to and from work is a major issue.” In 2007, the developer submitted a plan that received fierce opposition. 12 years later, they are presenting a new one at council chambers. (CNS) - Southwestern College holds a memorial event at its Higher Education Center in San Ysidro on Thursday to mark the 35th anniversary of the McDonald's shooting that left 21 dead and 19 others injured.The event featured a community resource fair, a memorial ceremony and a student artwork display at the college's Higher Education Center, which is located at the former site of the McDonald's restaurant. The center also has a memorial with 21 hexagonal pillars representing each of the shooting's victims."It opens up the wounds. You never learn to get over it," says Guillermo Flores, who lost his brother in the shooting. His younger brother David was 11 years old at the time. "You just learn how to live with that pain."The shooting is the seventh-deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history and was the deadliest mass shooting ever committed in the U.S. at the time. The gunman, who lived roughly 200 yards from the San Ysidro restaurant, was killed by a sniper with the San Diego Police Department. SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV)— A Santee family is praying for recovery and justice, as their mother remains on life-support. She was the victim of a hit-and-run crash Wednesday night. 10News spoke to Richard Johnson. His mother Julie Johnson and sister in law, Jayme Morton-Johnson were the victims of the hit-and-run.According to Richard Johnson, Wednesday at around 8 pm, they heard a commotion outside their home. Johnson said Julie ran outside and saw a neighbor boy getting beaten by three teenage boys.  Julie's other son, Robert, who is also Jayme's husband, says he was making dinner when his mother called him outside because of the altercation.  Robert stepped in to help break up the fight. They, and a neighbor, were able to put an end to it, but the teens ran into the car. “(Julie) always had a heart out for people are hurt or hears somebody in need, she acts right away, and that’s what she did," Richard Johnson said of his mother. As the suspects made their get-away, they sped onto the curb, hit the women, and flung them onto the street. “Jayme rolled off the side of the car with little injury," Johnson said. "And my mom flew off the car, and the impact was deadly. “Jayme was released from the hospital Thursday."The only thing I recall is seeing that drivers eyes and him hitting us and that’s when we grabbed each other, and by no means do I see it being an accident," she said.Jayme is expected to make a full recovery. Julie Johnson was not so lucky. The impact sent her flying 40 feet. Her brain is now non-responsive. An oxygen machine is the only thing keeping her alive. San Diego County Sheriffs Department said within two hours, they found the get-away car at Sonrise Community Church just two miles south of the crash. The owner of the vehicle then turned in one of the passengers, a 16-year-old boy, who was booked into juvenile hall for Felony hit-and-run. The two other teens have not been arrested. "I just want them to turn themselves in and give justice to my mother in law," Jayme said.“An irresponsible decision can end somebody’s life," Johnson said. While Johnson and his family wait for an arrest, they also pray. They said that is the only thing that may save their matriarch."The only thing they can do is hope from God that she will come back," Johnson said. "I’ve been praying that he’ll give her a chance.
