This holiday season, you may be stocking up on canned drinks for parties and guests. Well, you'll want to clean off those cans before handing them out!Investigator reporter Jace Larson tested soda cans for bacteria, and what he found was pretty gross.The cans tested came from a variety of places, including grocery stores, convenience stores, vending machines and cans stored in a home. All but one of the cans tested had mold on it.The highest mold count was 600 colonies of mold. That can came from a grocery store.This type of exposure could make people with compromised immune systems or lung disease sick.To put that number of colonies into perspective-- a flooded home could have 2,000-plus colonies of mold, while a condemned home could have roughly levels around 36,000.However, microbiologist Helene Ver Eecke, with the Metropolitan State University of Denver, says the 600 colonies of mold isn’t really a cause for concern.“Regular microbial load that we are constantly dosing ourselves with everything that we touch with everything we breathe,” Ver Eecke says. “It's just part of being human.”One soda can did test for bacteria levels that would be slightly concerning. The can—purchased from a convenience store--had the highest levels, with 3,700 bacteria colonies on it.But compared to dry cereal mixes, which can have up to 100,000 bacteria colonies and deemed safe to consume by FDA standards, the colonies found on that can were significantly less."There was one sample that came from a convenience store that had a higher bacterial count than samples, which makes sense because they were probably stocked probably appropriate for people to wear gloves when stocking," explains Ver Eecke.If you’re worried about the amount of bacteria, Ver Eecke recommends seeking other options."There may be other options for you a bottle or other things to try to help keep you safe." 1901

If you're able to donate, make sure you do your homework, and make a plan for your money so that it supports a worthy cause.Court documents from September detail a four-state investigation that shut down a sham charity, which, according to investigators, bilked consumers out of millions. They claimed to use donations to help homeless veterans, breast cancer survivors, and disabled law enforcement. But the real people in need got next to nothing."The fraudsters out there are relying on your generosity your good wishes, the fact that you can’t say no when somebody says something like veterans or children or breast cancer- they want to tug on those heartstrings," said Yael Fuchs, President of the National Association of State Charity Officials (NASCO). "NASCO was formed so that state charity regulators can talk to each other, so that we can learn from each other, so that we can share tips and make sure that we are coordinating our enforcement efforts.”They often work together to take down the bad guys. And when they're not doing that, they're proactively following fundraising drives. “Do we see exorbitant amounts of money going to professional fundraisers- do we see big upticks in the salaries that the leaders of the charity are making,” Fuchs said.They look for ways in which people are being taken advantage of. So, how do you know who's good and who's not? Enter organizations like Charity Navigator. “We’re a database with all of the registered nonprofits in the United States,” said Michael Thatcher, President, and CEO of Charity Navigator. Thatcher says the company has grown to be the largest independent evaluator of nonprofits in the country. Basically, they give you all the tools you need to make the right decisions when it comes to donations.“Never charge the donor for access to the information and never charge the charities to be evaluated so you eliminate any potential conflict of interest,” Thatcher said If you're looking to give this year, he recommends focusing on how the organization is run, how they're making a difference in the world. Review their financial data, and ask questions - lots of questions. "How have they pivoted around COVID and how have they stayed true to their mission and also stayed in business?" Thatcher added.NASCO recommends you do extensive research. And be specific about the "cause" you want to support. “Where is my money going- how will it be used? What we always want people to remember is you don’t want to give to a buzzword you’re not just giving to a cause you’re giving to a particular charity so you want to be able to trust that charity to understand what their programs are.” The need will be big this year. And donations will be unpredictable. So, experts also say, make a plan, talk to your family, and give with intent so that your donation goes where it's supposed to. 2923

Three firefighters died Thursday while battling two separates blazes, one in Pennsylvania and the other in New York.On Thursday night, a New York City firefighter died during a five-alarm fire in Harlem on the set of the film "Motherless Brooklyn."Michael Davidson, 37, died of injuries in the blaze that broke out in the cellar of an unoccupied building, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said in a press conference."To our great sorrow, we now know that a NYC firefighter lost his life battling the blaze that grew, and our hearts ache in solidarity with his family," producers of the film said in a statement.Edward Norton is the film's director, and Bruce Willis and Alec Baldwin are among the cast, according to Internet Movie Database.The fire broke out as the film crew wrapped up shooting for the day, according to the producers' statement. "We watched firsthand with astonishment as (firefighters) charged into the smoke to make sure all were safely out and then fought to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading, putting their lives on the line as they do every day," it said.The fire spread rapidly, forcing firefighters to back out of the building. During that time, Davidson became separated from the rest of the unit, Nigro said.Davidson was found unconscious after a desperate search. He was transported to Harlem Hospital, where he later died.Davidson had been with the New York City Fire Department for 15 years and was cited for bravery four times, according to the fire agency's Facebook post. He is survived by his wife, Eileen, and four children. There have been 80 confirmed cases of the polio-like illness known as AFM in 25 states this year as of Friday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday.In addition, there are 139 cases under investigation for a total of 219 confirmed and suspected.This is eight more confirmed cases than the agency reported last week and 20 additional patients under investigation.The CDC noted an increase in reports of patients under investigation who began experiencing symptoms in August, September and October. It has not identified the 25 states with confirmed illnesses, nor has it said how many states are reporting cases under investigation.AFM, or acute flaccid myelitis, is a rare illness that affects the nervous system, especially the gray matter in the spinal cord, and can cause muscle weakness and sudden onset of paralysis. Last month, the CDC said that 90% of patients since 2014 have been children under the age of 4, although adults can also develop AFM.Other symptoms include drooping of the face or eyelids, difficult eye movement, trouble swallowing or slurred speech.Research is underway to determine the cause of AFM, although there is a focus on enteroviruses, which can cause respiratory illness and West Nile virus, and other viruses in that family.According to the CDC, there have been 404 confirmed cases in the United States since August 2014. The number of cases may be higher, but the condition is not subject to mandatory reporting, so not all cases are reported to state health departments and therefore may not be counted by the CDC."Even with an increase in cases since 2014, AFM remains a very rare condition. Less than one in a million people in the United States get AFM each year," the CDC says.AFM peaks every other year seasonally in late summer and fall. but experts have yet to identify a single factor geographically or otherwise to explain the cause.
