BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- China and Britain on Monday pledged to enhance military ties.The pledge came out of the meeting between Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission Guo Boxiong and visiting British Chief of Defense Staff Jock Stirrup.The military relationship is an important component of China-Britain relations, and the two sides have witnessed frequent exchange of high-level visits and fruitful cooperation in many fields, Guo said.He said China's armed forces attached importance to the friendly cooperation with the British armed forces, and would work with it to enhance mutual trust and expand cooperation.Stirrup echoed Guo saying the military relationship was very important and the British side hoped to strengthen military cooperation with China.The two sides also discussed the development of China-Britain relations and international and regional issues of common concern.Highlighting the development of China-Britain relations in recent years, Guo said the bilateral relationship is at a new historic starting point. BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Overseas Chinese have held memorial meetings and other mourning activities recently to remember the victims of a massive mudslide in northwest China that killed at least 1,248 people.During a mourning ceremony on Sunday at a Chinese-language school in Christchurch, New Zealand, overseas Chinese nationals and students observed three minutes' silence for the victims and placed candles in the shape of a heart.Participants then made donations to the mudslide-hit areas, saying they were deeply concerned about those affected by the disaster.On the same day, some overseas Chinese and employees of Chinese companies and institutions in Serbia suspended entertainment activities voluntarily to express their condolences for the victims.In Jordan, people from various walks of life and overseas Chinese residing in the country have offered their sympathy and condolences.Overseas Chinese in Cambodia have called the Chinese embassy to express condolences, saying they are ready to donate for the reconstruction of the mudslide-hit region.The death toll from the Aug. 8 massive mudslide in Zhouqu county, northwest China's Gansu province, has risen to 1,248, with 496 still missing, local disaster relief headquarters said.China is observing a day of national mourning on Sunday, with national flags flying at half mast and all public entertainment activities suspended.

MOSCOW, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China has played a role of great importance during the founding and development of G20, Russian presidential aide Arkady Dvorkovich said on Monday."Without China's participation, it would be much more difficult for the group to discuss or solve the developmental problems of world economy. Therefore, the participation of China, as well as some other emerging economies like Brazil and India, has become prominently significant," Dvorkovich commented after a news conference ahead of the upcoming G8 and G20 summit in Toronto, Canada.The presidential aide said the Chinese leaders' stance and viewpoints, proposed in the previous three G20 financial summit since November 2008, have helped stabilize the world economy as a whole.Dvorkovich noted that China's decision on further exchange rate reform was not outcome of external pressure.He said that any country, including Russia, China and the United States, could not allow their domestic policies to be ruled by external factors. The nations, however, should understand the common and mutual responsibilities in the global economic system.The delegates to the G20 summit will adjust their polices after consultations, but nobody will bend under pressure, he stressed.Dvorkovich said that several countries may voice concerns over China's exchange rate policies at the summits, but there will not be large-scale discussions over the Chinese currency.The People's Bank of China, China's central bank, announced on Saturday a decision to proceed further with the reform of the exchange rate regime to enhance the flexibility of the RMB's exchange rate.
