ATHENS, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Senior Chinese legislator Chen Zhili on Saturday called for the promotion of gender equality through education.Since the Fourth World Conference on Women, society has become more aware that the empowerment of women and the improvement of their status is critical to economic, political and social development, Chen said during a keynote speech at the UNESCO forum on gender equality in Athens.Chen, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said China has witnessed great improvement in the status of women in recent years.With the implementation of the Women Protection Law as well as other national policies on gender equality, the rights of Chinese women in the area of education, work and politics are guaranteed, Chen said.Chen also spoke highly of the efforts made by UNESCO to promote sustainable development through gender equality.During her speech, Chen made several proposals to promote gender equality. The proposals included creating a stronger voice for gender equality that should be heard by all people, especially male decision makers, she said. BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Environmental Protection has urged stepping up efforts to address pollution in north China's Haihe River.Speaking at a meeting on the issue Friday, minister of environmental protection Zhou Shengxian ordered making "unremitting" efforts to relieve the "pain of the Haihe."Zhou also called upon government departments to strictly follow various industrial policies on environmental protection, with the focus on construction projects featuring high water costs and pollutant discharge and projects located along rivers or on the upriver area of drinking water sources.While stressing the protection of drinking water and the control of pollution, Zhou also encouraged adopting more "ecological methods" in sewage treatment and the rehabilitation of lakes and rivers.Zhou urged Beijing, Tianjin and other developed regions to be pioneers in upgrading sewage treatment technology and transforming sewage into resources.

BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- A 66-member Chinese rescue and relief team sent to provide immediate assistance to flood ravaged Pakistan returned from the Pakistani port city Karachi to Beijing by charter flight Monday, officials said.China sent two rescue and relief missions to flood-afflicted Pakistan since the end of July when floods began taking their toll, said officials from China Southern Airlines Company Limited, which transported the team.The return of these 66 members, including medical workers, experts from the China Earthquake Administration, rescue soldiers as well as journalists, marked the end of the two rescue missions, noted officials.In response to the worst flooding in Pakistan's recent history, China's help included monetary assistance, urgently needed relief goods delivered directly to affected areas, a convoy of 101 trucks to the northern parts of Pakistan, two rescue and relief missions for providing medical relief to the victims, four military helicopters for carrying out rescue missions and an additional 200 million U.S. dollars for post-disaster reconstruction besides the previous 320 million yuan (47 million U.S. dollars) worth of humanitarian supplies.
