BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has said that low-rent and affordable housing construction should be sped up to meet people's basic demands for living.The construction of public low-rent housing seeks to offer middle and low-income urban residents with adequate housing and affordable rents. This not only helps curb skyrocketing property prices in some cities, but is also conducive to bridge the income gap and assist in urbanization, Li told a national meeting which concluded on Saturday.While speaking at the two-day meeting, Li urged local authorities to create favorable taxation and financing policies to support such housing programs.He noted that private capital is also welcome to join the mission to diversify fund raising channels. SHANGHAI, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) - Swiss President Doris Leuthard Thursday said the rise in bilateral trade between Switzerland and China is a delightful surprise, as she seeks to expand economic cooperation with China through a free trade agreement.The trade increase was a surprise as it came during the economic crisis last year, Leuthard said.In the first six months of 2010, Swiss exports to China increased more than 30 percent and Chinese exports to Switzerland increased more than 16 percent.Total trade volume between the two countries during the period hit 6.2 billion Swiss Francs (5.86 billion U.S. dollars), she added.Leuthard said she is optimistic about the future of Sino-Swiss bilateral trade, as the two countries are working on a free trade agreement."We are ending feasibility study (for the agreement) so both sides know the market, the opportunities and the risks very well. It is very promising," she said.After the joint feasibility study, the two sides will enter the final stage ahead of the signing of the deal, she added.Talks on the free trade agreement began in 2007 when Leuthard, as head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, signed an agreement with then-Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai. BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Economic data for May released Friday showed that China was eyeing rising inflation and slowing economic growth, indicative of what the "the most complicated year" meant for the country's economy.Experts said the mixed bag of economic data would make it difficult for China's policymakers in the coming months.China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose in May to 3.1 percent, the highest since November 2008, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Friday.The NBS also reported that growth of industrial value-added output slowed to 16.5 percent in May from 17.8 percent in April.Urban fixed assets investment for the first five months rose 25.9 percent year on year, 0.2 percentage points down from the first four months.INFLATION QUICKENSThe 3.1 percent CPI growth was up 0.3 percentage points from April's rise of 2.8 percent. In the first five months, China's CPI rose 2.5 percent year on year.The May figure exceeded the government's year-average target of 3 percent set in March.The producer price index (PPI), a major measure of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 7.1 percent year on year in May, up 0.3 percentage points from April's 6.8 percent.In May, the CPI in China's urban areas increased 2.9 percent and in rural regions by 3.3 percent. Food prices, which accounted for about a third of the weighting in calculating the CPI, rose 6.1 percent.
