SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s no mistake, the Marriott Marquis in Downtown San Diego is playing host to bees on the roof, and it’s all for the benefit of local business. The hive highlights a growing trend called urban beekeeping and the popularity of the practice is creating a lot of buzz. In 2012, the City of San Diego amended its municipal code to allow some residents, along with community gardens and retail farms to keep two beehives. The practice has several benefits, according to the city, including access to fresh, natural honey. The city says urban beekeeping also reduces the number of aggressive Africanized bees in the vicinity of the docile honeybee hive. Beekeeping is also known to reduce carbon footprint due to local production, however, there are some things to be aware of. The primary risk of beekeeping is getting stung. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Mayor Kevin Faulconer says changes are coming to the city's police department, as demands for police reform are made in cities around the nation.Faulconer says San Diego Police will develop a new de-escalation policy based on community feedback and best practices to reduce the number of use-of-force incidents. Maresa Talbert, Co-chair of San Diegans for Justice, says training could give officers a variety of tools."It can be as easy as a voice command. It can be something as simple as creating some space to really kind of calm down the situation where you're not face-to-face or where you're not arm-to-arm or touching," Talbert said.San Diego's police, like many departments around the nation, have faced increased scrutiny for use-of-force policies amid demonstrations against police brutality. In response, SDPD has banned the use of the carotid restraint technique among officers. Jack Schaeffer, President of the San Diego Police Officers Association, says the department's use-of-force policy, which includes de-escalation tactics, is regularly updated.City leaders have also responded. The Office on Race & Equity was recently created to tackle racial equity issues and City Council President Georgette Gomez has requested leaders consider a proposed ballot measure to expand police oversight this month."We heard the comments from the community. We heard the calls for reform. And I'm not waiting. We want to make lasting changes now. Not a year from now," Faulconer said of the forthcoming policy.Calls for a decrease in police spending, however, were not met. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just after President Donald Trump addressed the nation about border security, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Barrio Logan held an event to recruit volunteers to help at asylum shelters. “The primary purpose was to let people know from a more personal perspective what’s taking place with the caravan,” said Father John Auther, pastor at Our Lady. The volunteers work with the San Diego Rapid Response Network to help the migrants who make it across the border.Several people who had volunteered in the past got up to speak about their experiences. “If I thought I was humble, it’s made me more humble. It’s rewarding,” said Martha Carriedo. She has volunteered for months at the shelter which is housed in an undisclosed location in San Diego. It serves as a temporary refuge for asylum seekers who have made it through the border legally but need help finding a way to meet with friends or family. Or if they don’t have any connections in the U.S., to find a sponsor or longer-term housing option while they wait for their asylum case to be heard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just ahead of this holiday week, San Diego's Cross Border Xpress (CBX) unveiled new biometric facial comparison technology. The CEO of the sky bridge that connects travelers directly to the Tijuana International Airport told ABC 10News that it will further secure and streamline travel into the United States.The U.S.-Mexico border is still closed to non-essential travel because of COVID-19. CBX CEO Jorge Goytortua said CBX is still not encouraging people to travel right now but if they do, they can take advantage of this technology.“Within seconds, the technology will recognize the passenger in a [Customs and Border Protection (CBP)] database,” said Goytortua. He told ABC 10News that the comparison process happens only at a time and place where travelers are already required by law to verify their identity by presenting travel documents. Goytortua says that when a traveler arrives at the CBP processing area, he or she will have a photo taken at the primary inspection point. A CBP officer will do a review by retrieving the traveler's passport or visa photo from government holdings. The new photo will be compared to the previously collected photo.“It's going to be a hands-free process. It's going to be a much faster process,” he told ABC 10News.He added that CBX does not have access to the photos. Only CBP officers can see them. If travelers are still concerned about privacy, he said it's not mandatory to use the technology. “You can ask the officer if you don’t want to be processed like that then you will be processed the traditional way with your document read it on the scan. A CBP officer [will] research on their system and make sure that the person that is presenting the document is the one there in front of the officer,” he stated. 1790
