As scientists learn more about COVID-19, they are realizing that how people react to the virus could be based on the body's response to viruses like common colds.Meharry Medical College President Dr. James Hildreth says some studies are showing some individuals have T-cell responses to COVID-19 even though they never been exposed to it.He is talking about recent research revealing that some people may have immunity defenders called T-cells which could determine how their body reacts to COVID-19.According to the CDC, when the body fights an infection, the immune system remembers what it learned about how to protect the body against that disease.The body will retain a few specific T-cells known as memory cells - that will alert and help the immune system identify and produce antibodies to attack the foreign germ if it enters the body again."Viruses that look alike can sometimes elicit the same kinds of immune responses," said Hildreth.Hildreth says there are six strains of coronavirus that affect humans going back to the 1960s and some result in seasonal common colds.He says if you were infected with one of these viruses in the past it can determine the severity of the toll COVID-19 would take on your body now."There’s the possibility that a response to one of them gives you a partial to another because they have genetic similarities," said Hildreth.Hildreth says this doesn't mean a person has complete immunity to COVID-19."There’s strong evidence that you may not be immune to the virus, but you’ll have an immune response that recognizes SARS partially just because those two viruses look so much alike."Hildreth says this can help with treatments and even vaccinesThis story was originally reported by Kelsey Gibbs at WTVF. 1756

As mixed messages continue regarding face coverings, Mississippi became the first state to lift a statewide mask mandate. Cities and towns can now put their own rules in place.The governor said the facts and data still show masks work, and the state is still requiring them at certain events, including the state fair that starts this week.“I suspect Mississippi will see an increase in cases if people stop wearing face coverings,” said Dr. Amesh Adalja with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security.Infectious disease experts remind people just because an order may be lifted, doesn't mean they should stop wearing masks.“We have to have an effective vaccine to prevent people from getting infected as well as prevent them from getting severe disease, that we had adequate testing capacity so people could know their status and wouldn't go out into public if they were positive,” said Adalja. “I think short of that, masks are going to be one tool that we have to continue to use and many people are going to get accustomed to masks and they're going to realize that masks also likely have some impact on other respiratory viruses, so we may see mask wearing much more common in the United States, similar to what it is in other Asian countries, because of the value people are gaining from them.”New research on homemade cloth masks found they expel invisible cotton fibers into the air. ATLANTA — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is suing Atlanta to block the city from enforcing its mandate to wear a mask in public and other rules related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Kemp and Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, in a state court suit filed late Thursday, argued that Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has overstepped her authority and must obey Kemp’s executive orders under state law. The suit comes a day after Kemp clarified his executive orders to expressly block Atlanta and at least 14 other local governments from requiring people to wear face coverings. Kemp’s order was met with defiance Thursday by Bottoms and other mayors, who said they would continue enforcing their mandates and were prepared to go to court.Kemp has maintained a policy of voluntary use of masks throughout the state. Georgia has seen a significant increase in COVID-19 cases in the past week. BALTIMORE — Baltimore City Fire officials are investigating a Wednesday morning explosion at the BGE office building downtown.In total, 23 people were rescued from various parts of the building.Fire officials say 21 of them have been taken to the hospital. At least nine are in serious or critical condition.According to a statement, BGE said the 21 contractors were treated at area hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries.BGE said two individuals rescued were window washers who became trapped high atop a scaffold on the side of the building. Severe damage has been reported from the tenth floor of the building all the way up to the roof, which partially collapsed. 680
