RED BLUFF, Calif — Two people were left dead and at least four people were in fair condition Saturday after a man drove into a distribution center and started shooting at people. The two deceased people and the four injured ones were treated at St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff. Authorities shot the man. Emergency dispatchers told the Record-Searchlight newspaper that the shooting by a man with “AR-type weapon” started about 3:30 p.m. at the Walmart distribution center. Dispatchers say there also was a fire at the site, and the suspect appears to have rammed a vehicle into the building. The suspect had been shot in the chest around 3:45 p.m. 669

(KGTV) - A new overpass may be destined for the I-15, not for people but mountain lions.A just-released study led by The Nature Conservancy and backed by the National Park Service recommended a stretch of the I-15 just south of Temecula - either an overpass or underpass like crossings in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming - allowing mountain lions and other wildlife to safely get across.On the west side of the highway is preserve space owned by San Diego State University.  On the other side are 73 acres just purchased by The Nature Conservancy.  Experts says the local mountain lions have been cut off by the freeways and are practicing inbreeding."That makes them more susceptible to disease, and that could be catastrophic for the mountain lion population," said Cara Lacey, an associate program director at The Nature Conservancy.Lacey points out crossings in other states have also cut down on vehicle collisions with wildlife.  She says at least three mountain lions were struck by vehicles in that stretch of I-15 in 2017.  Caltrans is studying a crossing on Highway 101, which would cost between and million. 1165

Several groups led by Native American activists are planning protests for Trump’s July 3 visit, part of his “comeback” campaign for a nation reeling from sickness, unemployment and social unrest. But it comes amid a national reckoning over racism and a reconsideration of the symbolism of monuments around the globe. Many Native American activists say the Rushmore memorial is as reprehensible as the many Confederate monuments being toppled around the nation.The president's plans are also raising questions about fireworks safety. A fire expert says a fireworks display planned at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial is “ill advised” given the abnormally dry conditions and risk of summer wildfires. Earlier this month, he said shooting fireworks over the extremely flammable ponderosa pine forest should not be done.
