SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Behind the research board project that placed top 300 in the national broadcom master's STEM competition, is Scripps Ranch High's freshman, Agastya Sridharan. "It started when I was reading a Wall Street report saying google search results were bias and it was shocking to me."Agastya created a Google platform mock-up that surveyed people's perceptions on political candidates, based on search engine results. "I had a few political search results which were arranged in 5 different orders, one favoring a liberal, one favoring a conservative. Once I got the results back, I was shocked how much it changed people's perspectives by 30%."And it wasn't just his creativeness that got the judge's attention. He was also asked to answer two questions, one to offer a solution to the global wildfire issue. "You'd have a fleet of drones that'd detect fires with image processions and AI, that was my idea for solving the wildfires." His sharp responses then placed him in the top 30. "I just freaked out, it was incredible."Next month, Agastya will be competing in the final round as the contest goes virtual for the first time amid COVID-19. He said the most exciting takeaway so far, has been seeing others his age come up with real solutions that could change the world. "They've really tried to solve some of the problems pressing the world today. Like how to approach the problems our world face because we're going to be the ones inhibiting it, right?" 1482
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Choir members in San Diego have made it their mission to use music to bring comfort to people nearing the end of their lives.Threshold Choir's director, Nadean Burington, started the local chapter in 2011. It is an a cappella choir that sings for and with those at the thresholds of life. They sing at the bedside at San Diego hospices, institutions, and private homes.Recently, doctors diagnosed Burington with stage four cancer. She has recently started requesting the choir's services.“It's wonderful. It's a gift back to me now for what I've given to help start it,” Burington said. “I feel well at this point but I want to the music continue for as long as possible.”Burington says the next directors have been picked out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than .4 million over three months across San Diego County's ports of entry, according to the agency.CBP says the undeclared money bound for Mexico was seized between April and June at ports of entry including Calexico, Otay Mesa, Cross Border Xpress, San Ysidro, and Tecate, CBP says.One of the largest stops occurred in May when a vehicle was stopped in Otay Mesa and discovered money hidden in boxes with other items in the cargo area of the vehicle."These various interdictions by our vigilant officers are just a fraction of the regular attempts we see during the year," said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. "This is a demonstration of our officers’ efforts in stopping the illegal movement between our borders." 828
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As schools reopen with distance learning, a local nonprofit is working to bridge the digital divide during a critical time.Tammy Hershfield co-founded Computers 2 San Diego Kids 17 years ago, providing refurbished computers to low-income children. She says the local digital divide remains a big one."One in four children in San Diego don't have computer in their home, and 50 percent of those are low income families," said Hershfield.The digital divide is now even more concerning because of COVID-19, as students begin the school year with distance learning."These kids were already at a disadvantage. They were having to do their learning just in the classroom. Not they don't even have that, so we need to get them these computers," said Hershfield.Since the pandemic started, the nonprofit has refurbished and distributed nearly 18,000 computers to local kids. Dozens of volunteers and staff are working on the computers every day."We hired 14 additional staff. We're open six days a week, working 10 hours a day to get things done," said Hershfield.Families receiving the computers pick up the computers at the nonprofit's warehouse in the Miramar area. Hershfield remembers one family, a furloughed single mother of 4 with a 17-year-old daughter applying for college and loans on a phone. That family received two computers."Mom cried, and I cried. The digital disparity is real, and COVID-19 has put a on shining light on it. We can band together and help the people that need the help," said Hershfield.Hershfield says they have about 6,000 computers being worked on and need more donated computers.The nonprofit has partnered with Cox Communications to include free internet access for up to four months. 1742
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Custom churros are the latest foodie find on Kearny Mesa's bustling Convoy Street culinary scene.Churreria is taking the classic dessert treat and adding their own twist. The churro stop gives customers the chance to customize their churro with toppings like bacon, coconut, and even fruity pebbles. Better yet, churros are made right before customers' eyes.Nicholas Tran, owner of Churreria, said the idea for a churro shop developed after a trip by the border.RELATED: 10 must-eat restaurants on San Diego's Convoy Street"We saw this kiosk and they were having these churros from this little stand. And I was 'Oh my god. That's a fantastic idea,'" Tran said. "Everyone loves churros!"Tran's wife and his business partner embarked to Spain to develop how they would make their churros. The main difference, Tran, said is the basic ingredients.Traditional North American churros contain egg, milk, and butter. Spanish churros, though, are made from just flour, water, salt, and oil."It's vegan and vegetarian. It's good for people who are lactose intolerant or who have a dairy intolerance or with eggs," Tran. "This happens to be a healthy churro. Customers order whether they want their churro stuffed with Nutella or sweet cream or not, and then they can choose from different glazes and toppings, including sprinkles, nuts, and cookie crumbs."There's nothing to hide. We want to show you we make it from scratch and it's clean," Tran said.Another fun aspect of Churreria is its sustainability arm.Tran worked with his business partner to do something good with their cooking oil after use. The pair settled on donating the used oil to two areas: A local company that repurposes cooking oil into biofuel and a shelter that uses the oil for soap for homeless individuals."We try to put back into the community instead of just dumping the grease ... and having it hauled away," Tran said. "We're trying to be better for the environment that way." 2164
