CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Coronado residents heard a plan from the Port of San Diego Monday night that would allow for 350 new hotel rooms to be built on the island. Those who showed up were not happy.“Most of the residents don’t want this development to happen,” said resident Kelly Sarber. “The city can’t really handle what we're dealing with right now,” she added, referring to the island’s notorious traffic. The new proposal is part of an update to the Port’s master plan, which includes 2,403 acres of land across 34 miles of waterfront around San Diego Bay.In Coronado, the new master plan would allow for 350 hotel rooms to be built in the north Coronado subdistrict, which includes the Ferry Landing and the area occupied by the existing Marriot Hotel.“What this plan sets out is potential growth for next 30 years,” said Lesley Nishihira, planning director for the Port. She said currently they have not received a plan from a developer to actually build a hotel on the Ferry Landing property. However, if approved, the updated master plan would allow for one to be built eventually. Though, any project proposal would also have to go through a public review period. The comment period for the Master Plan draft goes through July 31. Comments can be emailed to the Port of San Diego at PMPU@portofsandiego.org. Final approval of the plan isn’t expected until late 2020. 1384

CNN said Thursday that it had severed ties with contributor Marc Lamont Hill following controversial comments the liberal pundit made about Israel."Marc Lamont Hill is no longer under contract with CNN," a spokesperson for CNN confirmed in a short statement. The move was first reported by the media news website Mediaite.Hill, who is also a professor at Temple University in Philadelphia, made the controversial comments during a meeting at the United Nations held for the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on Wednesday. In his remarks at that meeting, Hill said "we must advocate and promote non-violence," but added that "we cannot endorse a narrow politics of respectability that shames Palestinians for resisting, for refusing to do nothing in the face of state violence and ethnic cleansing."Hill also called for a "free Palestine from the river to the sea."The comments were immediately condemned by critics who said Hill was calling for the end of the Israeli state.Hill did not respond to a request for comment Thursday afternoon, but in a series of tweets he addressed the issue."I do not support anti-Semitism, killing Jewish people, or any of the other things attributed to my speech. I have spent my life fighting these things," Hill wrote."My reference to 'river to the sea' was not a call to destroy anything or anyone," Hill continued in a separate tweet. "It was a call for justice, both in Israel and in the West Bank/Gaza. The speech very clearly and specifically said those things. No amount of debate will change what I actually said or what I meant."This was not the first time Hill has come under fire.In October, a 2016 photo that Hill took with Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, an unabashed anti-Semite, resurfaced. At the time, Hill said he disagreed with Farrakhan on certain issues and that the two discussed "many things" in their meeting, including "the question of anti-Semitism in depth" and LGBTQ issues."Although I disagree with the Minister on those important issues, I will not allow that to be an excuse for allowing dishonest media or poorly intentioned observers to create unnecessary division," Hill tweeted at the time. "I will not be told who to speak to, sit with, or engage." 2263

Coffee giant Starbucks has set a goal to become more diverse: by 2025, they want 30% of its corporate employees and 40% of its retail and manufacturing employees to be Black, indigenous, and people of color. The Seattle-based company made the announcement Wednesday as they look to create a more diverse and equitable workplace to "advance racial and social equity as part of its ongoing journey to create a welcoming and inclusive Third Place.""As we consider the role and responsibility of Starbucks, as a company, to lead by example in areas of inclusion, diversity, and equity, we will be intentional about the actions we take and how they line up with our Mission and Values, commit to transparency with all stakeholders about our thinking and our goals, and hold ourselves accountable," Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said in a letter to employees. They also are starting a new mentorship program, anti-bias training requirements, and other initiatives. The company added that it'll connect its executive compensation program to its goals of building "inclusive and diverse teams."Starbucks says these diversity goals will ensure that its coffee shops are "welcoming places for all." 1191

Customers at Starbucks will have new ways to pay for their drinks and food while still earning stars in their rewards program. The changes to the Starbucks Rewards loyalty program begin Tuesday, September 15.Customers have complained for years about the need to reload their Starbucks card in order to spend money at the coffee giant and earn loyalty stars. In order for customers to earn stars in their loyalty program, customers had to use a Starbucks card or gift card to pay. This forced regular customers to constantly reload their card to ensure there was enough money for their purchases.Starting Tuesday, alternative ways to pay will be allowed and still allow members to earn stars for purchases. Alternative methods include debit/credit cards, cash, and select mobile wallets. However, there’s a catch.Customers paying with their Starbucks card or gift card will earn two loyalty stars per spent, and those paying with alternative methods will earn one star per spent. 990
