A man convicted in the 1971 Black Liberation Army assassination of two NYPD officers will be released on parole in October, the widow and daughter of NYPD Patrolman Joseph Piagentini told Scripps station WPIX-TV.A state source confirmed the decision late Tuesday afternoon, saying 68-year-old Anthony Bottom, who now goes by Jalil Abdul Mutaqim, has been granted "an open release date of October 20, 2020 or earlier."Bottom's been in state prison since 1977, more than 43 years."I am very angry," widow Diane Piagentini said about the decision.Piagentini accused Bottom of being the most ruthless of the killers, who lured the two patrolmen, one Black and one White, to Harlem with a phony 911 call. Jones, who was Black, was shot five times."He (Bottom) shot him in the head and down his spine," Diane Piagentini recalled.Piagentini said Bottom then turned his gun on her 27-year-old husband, who had 22 bullet holes in his body when he was pronounced dead.“He (Bottom) used Joe's gun to complete the killing because they were running out of bullets," Piagentini said of her husband’s death.Two years ago, Piagentini had unsuccessfully fought the controversial release of Bottom's accomplice, Herman Bell.Parole commissioners at the time were staying true to an Executive Order from Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2011, which told the board to be "forward thinking" and focus more on a prisoner's rehabilitation instead of the original crime.During Bell's later parole hearings, he showed remorse.The third convicted killer, Albert Washington, had died in prison.Bottom has been in police custody for more than 49 years, ever since his arrest in California in August 1971. CHICAGO, Ill. – When it comes to the musical instruments, we hear every day, many are mass produced. But, there’s something about the sound that comes from a hand-crafted instrument. It’s a talent that takes years to learn. Gently whittling away, the seasoned wood students are learning the age-old skill. “Violin-making is mostly a craft but there is also art involved,” explained Antoine Nédélec, Director of the Chicago School of Violin Making. The school is one of only three full-time violin making schools in the country. The program takes three years. Students learn to make violins, violas and cellos. “We do things almost identically as they did it four-hundred years ago,” said Nédélec. “There’s a few power tools here and there but really it’s almost the same.” Mass produced violins normally cost less. But some argue they’re less durable and produce a less rich sound. It’s why the handmade instruments are still in demand. “Pretty tedious process… trying to match a scroll,” said second year student Trevor Austin. Austin comes from a family of violinmakers. “Going forward I’d like to go into my family’s shop and work to eventually run it. So, that’s what I’m looking forward to,” he said.Over the course of their three-year studies, students are required to build six instruments. Instructor Kristin Siegfried Ballenger says the last one must be constructed in six weeks without supervision. “We’re here in case of emergencies but we want to be able to have the students prove that they are capable of working on their own in constructing instruments,” said Ballenger. Kyung Hee came to the school from South Korea. So far, she’s completed two of the required six violins. “I’m really happy that I made this one, because I was a little doubtful at first,” she said. Claire Rowan, a third-year student says not everyone who learns the craft has a musical background. “All of it was a learning curve since I never played violin growing up or at all and I only really enjoy crafting,” said Rowan. “So, even learning wood-working, learning how to use tools was really exciting.” But the true test comes from the sound their instruments generate. “You need to be good with your ears…. DENVER, Colo. -- Megan Fischer’s life story is one of strength and triumph. Her black belt in taekwondo is proof of her ability to persevere when mind and body are pushed to their limits. It’s a challenge she chooses to take part in. However, there was a time about 15 years ago when she had to overcome a challenge that wasn't planned. “In June of 2001, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. It was explained to me as being roughly the size of an average-sized human fist. So relatively large in the head of a 6-year-old,” Megan Fischer said. Fischer is a childhood cancer survivor. “I remember just kind of a lot of times feeling like ‘why I am I here, why am I in this situation where I’m being hurt.'” After a surgery to remove the tumor, Fischer underwent chemotherapy for 11 months. It made her very sick. But it worked, and a couple years later, Fischer was cancer free. “Now I just kind of try and advocate for other kids with cancer, and kind of help them through.” Fischer is hoping to raise awareness of the shortage of the chemo drug Vincristine. It was part of her treatment many years ago. “I don’t know if it was the reason why I was able to have so much success in my tumor disappearing, but I definitely know that the side effects of Vincristine are pretty terrible. So I don’t think that my doctors would have put me on it if they didn’t think it was going to play a role in my chemotherapy treatments,” Fischer said. Dr. Lia Gore is the Chief of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant at Children’s Hospital Colorado. She says Vincristine is the backbone of many chemotherapy regimens used. “It is actually a critical element of therapy for leukemia, for some childhood brain tumors, for several other kinds of cancers,” Dr. Gore said. She says there are two primary companies that produce Vincristine, and one recently decided to stop supplying the drug. Dr. Gore says hospitals were given very little warning. “Teva [Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.] which was a very large supplier – large volume supplier – just decided to stop making this drug. TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay area is known for its crystal clear beaches and white sand.Many people see the saltwater as a place to relax and kick back, but Dr. Serene Al-Momen sees it as a vast area of opportunity to stop the spread of the coronavirus.Specifically with what lies under the surface."The jellyfish is the component of the sensor that basically makes the cell emit light when a pathogen from the air is connected to it or binds to it," Dr. Al-Momen said.Dr. Al-Momen is the CEO of the company Senseware. She said the jellyfish is helping her team identify the coronavirus in the air.Her team works to find what's in the air behind the scenes. They do it with a sensor box not much bigger than an Amazon Echo at home.The sensor can detect pathogens in the air like Ecoli, SARS and anthrax.In March, they shifted gears in what type of pathogen they wanted to find."We took what we had and we kind of improved on it to really meet the challenges of today with COVID," Dr. Al-Momen said.The sensor can count particles down to the smallest micron that the common eye would never catch.To detect the coronavirus, they made adjustments."For COVID, we have the SARS code 2 antibody in that cell. So, what happens is when we get the sample of the air and the sensor gets the sample of the air there is a pathogen that binds into the cell and connects to it it will emit light," Dr. Al-Momen said.To help identify pathogens scientists use a luminescent component from a jellyfish; something that is nothing new when working to identify viruses and diseases."This particular methodology was created in the early 2000s by the MIT Lincoln Labs to specifically identify anthrax threats when anthrax was an issue," Dr. Al-Momen said.The jellyfish's protein helps light up a cell when a pathogen from the air is connected to or binds to it.The team then uses sophisticated algorithms that measure the intensity of the light that can determine whether it's positive or negative.The sensors cost tens of thousands of dollars and are geared towards larger corporations such as hospitals and senior care facilities.Senseware is currently in the Beta testing phase and they hope to offer the machine commercially by November.For more information about Senseware, visit their website.
