WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Visiting top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Thursday met with U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of common concern.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, was the first top Chinese legislator that has visited the United States during the past two decades.     Before meeting with Obama, Wu met U.S. Vice President Joe Biden at the White House. Wu will hold talks with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton later in the day. BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and other top leaders watched a large-scale musical epic on Monday recounting the country's road from the Opium War in 1840 to 2009, together with people from all walks of life in Beijing.     The nearly three-hour musical "Road to Revival", in dedication to the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), was staged at the Great Hall of the People. BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The inaugural World Media Summit began in Beijing on Friday with a speech from Chinese President Hu Jintao that drew praise from many foreign media members.     Tom Curley, president and chief executive of The Associated Press, said that he was delighted to hear some 15 months after the Beijing Olympics that the progress of China opening up to the world would continue.     Curley said that Hu's speech seemed quite sincere and that the president's appearance at the summit "was an important gesture as well." The Chinese president also called on media organizations to promote peace.     South Korea's Yonhap News Agency said Hu elaborated on China's media policies in his speech and pledged that the Chinese government would safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of foreign news media and continue to facilitate foreign media coverage of China in accordance with the law.     South Korea's JoongAng Daily reported that a three-day "media Olympics" Opened in Beijing, China.     The newspaper said that the summit puts a heavy emphasis on the coexistence, competition, dependency and convergence of the traditional media and new media.     "It is also noteworthy that China is pursuing ambitious media reconstruction strategies by planning and hosting such a large-scale event," the newspaper said.     Japan's Kyodo said that representatives from about 170 media organizations worldwide began two days of talks Friday in Beijing. The talks, Kyodo said, focused on the potential for cooperation and competition between new and traditional media in an era of globalization with growing use of digital and multimedia technology.     The Jiji News Agency of Japan said Chinese media are tapping into the world market by providing multi-language services and going multimedia. It said Xinhua is expanding its business by launching a TV news service and developing online and mobile phone services.

LONDON, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Finance Minister Xie Xuren said on Friday that the current economic stimulus measures should be maintained to ensure economic recovery and growth worldwide.     After a BRIC-country meeting held in London, Xie told a news conference that the four countries are now at a key stage of economic recovery, and should strengthen their coordination of economic policy.     The finance ministers and central bank governors of Brazil, Russia, India and China, the so-called BRIC countries, gathered in London on Friday to discuss the current situation of the world economy, as well as their governments' fiscal and monetary policy responses.     Xie stressed that promoting the reform of international financial institutions is a common consensus reached at the G20 summit held in London in April, adding that "we must put it into practice in accordance with the timetable."     The Chinese minister also called on the international community to attach great importance to the imbalance between the North and the South, and to further help developing countries realize common development, so as to achieve a fundamental balance and sustainable growth of the global economy. In many of them, growth is already back on track after a few quarters of recession or slowdown. BEIJING, July 25 (Xinhua) -- China issued alert on 8 p.m. Saturday for flood in the country's Hunan and Jiangxi provinces which left dozens people dead or missing and displaced hundreds of thousands, and sent relief groups to the two provinces.     As of 4 p.m. of Saturday, five people were killed, 10 were missing and about 64,000 were relocated by the widespread heavy rain in Hunan since July 23, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.
