A gunman killed 26 people and wounded 20 others at a Texas church Sunday morning in what Gov. Greg Abbott called the largest mass shooting in state history. At one point, the shooter tried to get a license to carry a gun in Texas but was denied by the state, Abbott said, citing the director of Texas' Department of Public Safety."So how was it that he was able to get a gun? By all the facts that we seem to know, he was not supposed to have access to a gun," Abbott told CNN. "So how did this happen?" 510
A Black man who was stopped by sheriff’s deputies while jogging in his neighborhood, then later allowed to leave, is partnering with the department to use his experience for training. In late August, Joseph Griffin was jogging when deputies from Volusia County detained him, telling him he “matched the description” of a suspect they were chasing.“Hey buddy, you’re not in trouble or anything,” the deputy starts on the video, telling Griffin he matches the description of a burglary suspect being sought nearby. “Literally they said white tank top and black shorts, and had a beard. I’m not saying it’s you,” the deputy said, telling Griffin he wanted to check in with other deputies at the scene. In the video, you can hear the deputies radio fellow investigators and double check the description. The deputy later tells Griffin he is being told to detain him. The deputy offers to hold Griffin’s phone to continue recording the incident while he is handcuffed.Griffin remains handcuffed for several minutes while deputies wait for confirmation if he is the suspect or not. Griffin stays calm and talks to the deputies during this time.“Seven cop cars, with everything going on, it’s just a little bit scary,” Griffin says. The deputies agree, but say “see it through our eyes,” since he matches the description. “Do you think we want to be out here killing people?”Eventually, Griffin is let go and it is determined he was not the suspect deputies were looking for. The suspect was later arrested. Griffin is seen on camera thanking the deputies, “Officer Estrada, who said from the beginning he wasn’t going to let anything happen to me.” 1648

A California judge halted Stormy Daniels' lawsuit against Michael Cohen for 90 days while the criminal investigation of President Donald Trump's personal attorney moves forward in New York.Cohen had asked to halt the lawsuit because he would assert his Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate himself while the criminal investigation continues. He said he wouldn't be able to fully respond to questions that arose in Daniels' lawsuit. In short, the lawsuit put Cohen in the hot seat at the same time he's fending off the criminal probe.Because Cohen was the "alleged mastermind" behind a hush agreement and settlement payment with Daniels over her alleged affair with Trump, Judge James Otero wrote, he would have to choose whether he would take the Fifth or defend himself on "every major aspect" of the details in the case.Otero further said he believes Cohen could be indicted. 888
A California synagogue has been vandalized with anti-Semitic graffiti less than a week after a gunman killed 11 Jewish worshipers in Pittsburgh.Someone spray-painted "F*** Jews" early Wednesday on the wall of Beth Jacob Congregation in Irvine, police said. The Irvine Police Department posted a surveillance-camera video of a man in a hoodie spraying the exterior of the synagogue.Police said officers will increase patrols around the city's Jewish organizations."IPD has reached out to its partners in the Jewish community to reaffirm the Department's commitment to protecting their members, houses of worship and educational institutions," the department posted on Facebook. Mayor Don Wagner said the vandalism and a similar anti-Semitic incident at Irvine Valley College are "enraging and unacceptable."In early October, police found swastikas scrawled in the restrooms of the college, according to a local councilwoman. 937
A man released on parole from prison two weeks ago stole a police SUV near Dayton, Ohio, and crashed into a minivan filled with children, killing two 6-year-old girls, police said Tuesday.Ten others were injured, including five children and the suspect. One child remained in critical condition, police said.Dayton's police chief said that 32-year-old Raymond Walters was driving at nearly 100 mph (161 kph) in the stolen police cruiser through the city's downtown Monday night when he ran a red light and hit two vehicles. The family in the minivan had just stopped at a library and was leaving when Walters slammed into them, police said. Six of those inside the minivan were from the same family and the other child was a relative, police said.A coroner identified the two who died as Eleanor McBride, of Huber Heights, and Penelope Jasko, of Dayton. They were cousins, the family's priest told the Dayton Daily News.It all started when Walters stabbed his father and then took off in his father's pickup truck, said Police Chief Richard Biehl.Walters' father was driving him to a hospital to undergo a mental health evaluation and when he found out he attacked his father, Biehl said.Soon after driving off, Walters crashed in the neighboring suburb of Riverside and then he jumped into a Riverside police SUV that had responded to the crash, police said. The officer had not known about the stabbing and had no reason to suspect that Walters might try to flee, said Riverside Police Chief Frank Robinson. The officer had used a stun gun while trying to get Walters out of the cruiser, Robinson said.Dashcam video showed Walters driving backwards in the stolen cruiser and ramming into another Riverside cruiser before driving away.Police in Dayton were looking for Walters, but they were not chasing him when he crashed downtown, Biehl said. The impact split the stolen cruiser into several large pieces.Police will pursue murder charges against Walters, who was hospitalized in stable condition Tuesday, Beihl said. His father, who had wounds to the head, arms, face and chest, also was in stable condition.State prison records show Walters served about two years for robbery before he was paroled on Aug. 10. 2220
