SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A man was arrested last month after allegedly using a body bag and gurney to steal from a deceased man’s home, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.On August 31st, around noon, sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check at a Spring Valley home and discovered a 60-year-old man dead inside.They say he died of natural causes and was transported to a mortuary by a contracted independent mortuary service.A couple of days later, the victim’s family reported missing items, including a gun and a safe. They then watched surveillance video from the home and learned it had been burglarized.The alleged burglary happened about 11 hours after deputies responded to the welfare check.In the video provided by the sheriff's department, you see a man, now identified as Sammy Willie Gates, rolling a gurney and body bag out of the house and into a white van.Detectives say the body bag was full of stolen items.Gates is the owner of Mortuary Transportation services, a contracted independent mortuary service; however, deputies say his company was not used to transport the victim’s body earlier.It’s unclear how Gates would have known the home was empty.Detectives from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station served a search warrant at Gates home in unincorporated El Cajon on September 9th.Inside, they found the victim’s safe and gun, along with 16 more firearms, two additional safes, jewelry, watches, war medals, comic books, thousands of dollars in collectible coins, and multiple personal identifying documents.Detectives also found a gurney and body bag matching the items in the video in Gate’s white utility van.He was arrested and charged with felonies, including Burglary of the First Degree and Receiving Stolen Property.Gates has prior felonies and is due in court for a preliminary hearing in January. 1857

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There will not be a new pledge class this year for one fraternity at San Diego State University.Phi Kappa Theta had its charter revoked by its national organization on Nov. 6.According to Phi Kappa Theta National, recent actions by members of the CA Phi Iota Chapter caused the chapter to be placed on suspension by both SDSU and the fraternity earlier this fall."This unanimous decision was difficult yet necessary," Fraternity President Adrian Gonzalez said. "Our intention is to use this process as a means to continue our Board’s long-term vision of supporting chapters aligned with our mission, vision, and values.”The fraternity said the SDSU’s chapter’s culture no longer aligned with the fraternity. SDSU officials said Phi Kap was initially put on suspension in January of this year and advised the fraternity that any further incident would result in their removal.“Allegations of violation of the alcohol policy by the fraternity were reported in September, which necessitated the further action,” SDSU media relations officer Cory Marshall said.Phi Kappa Theta’s expulsion at SDSU is in effect for seven years. 1159

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - U.S. Coast Guard rescued 13 Mexican nationals from the waters off the coast of La Jolla Saturday.The rescue, located near the Children's Pool, was reported just before 8 a.m., according to the Coast Guard. The 13 individuals, one woman and 12 men, were rescued from a panga boat and brought to shore.Border Patrol officials took the individuals into custody and officials believe they were trying to enter the country illegally.RELATED: One person hurt, possible drug packages found after boat washes ashore in CarlsbadPanga boat attempts to illegally have seen a sharp increased since 2010, according to Border Patrol, as land borders have tightened.Just last month, one person was found injured around several packages of marijuana washed ashore in Carlsbad. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Vandals damaged a park in Sabre Springs Thursday night, dumping sand into toilets and scrawling inappropriate graffiti on the walls. Trash cans were emptied out and piles of wood chips were dumped along the entrance to the South Creek Neighborhood Park. The clogged toilets and sinks caused minor flooding in the bathrooms. Some of the plumbing was also damaged, according to the San Diego Police Department. City crews cleaned up the mess by the afternoon. Police were still searching for the culprits Friday. 537

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across California, a record-breaking 3.7 million acres have already burned in more than 8-thousand wildfires this year.Both Cal Fire San Diego and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department are preparing to respond to potential fire disasters, as dangerous weather conditions return to San Diego County.“We know the potential is there,” said Thomas Shoots, a public information officer for Cal Fire. “We’re holding all our firefighters on duty, and we’re staffing on every piece of equipment to make sure we’re covered, we’ve brought on contract dozers. We’ve asked that the other agencies that we work with here in the county provide resources, and they stepped up, and we’re very appreciative of that.”San Diego Fire-Rescue has also increased staffing and equipment.The National Weather Service extended a Red Flag Warning to Tuesday at 5 p.m. for the inland valleys and mountains.A heat advisory will also be in effect Tuesday through Thursday.Just weeks ago, the Valley Fire destroyed homes and charred more than 16 thousand acres in the East County.With similar weather conditions, fire crews hope community members will try to reduce the possibility of a fire sparking.“If everybody could do their part, anything they can think of that can start a fire, whether its dragging chains down the highway, clearing brush with metal motors, please be extra cautious,” said Shoots.SDG&E warned 700 customers in the backcountry of the possibility of Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) but sent the all-clear to most customers by Monday afternoon.However, 19 customers in Descanso may still be impacted by PSPS overnight into Tuesday. 1651
