CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) — Extreme heat swept through San Diego County Friday, with many areas reaching triple-digit temperatures. But some residents said they were more miserable than usual, as their power was shut off for half the day.The heatwave is here, and for those living in the deserts, things are just unbearable."My swamp cooler is going 24 hours, and I've got my ceiling fan going!" Campo resident Karen McIntyre said.But McIntyre says she is one of the lucky ones. She is worried more about her family living in Lake Morena, who, for about half the day, did not have any power."During the middle of a pandemic, during the middle of an extreme heatwave, they still send out notices advising them that they're going to be turning the power off today!" McIntyre said about her power company, SDGE.Although dated July 27, McIntrye says her family in Lake Morena received a letter from SDGE explaining the planned power outage on July 30, less than 24 hours before the planned outage. She said she had to scramble to get her two-year-old niece a place to cool off."She has a medical condition where she has to have her oxygen," McIntyre said. "She's on a feeding tube, and she has to stay in a cool house. And going out to another place or another home is stressful for her."The County has set up a few Cool Zones in East County. But McIntyre says her family and many others do not have the means to get there."That’s still too far away for a lot of people who have limited transportation," McIntyre said.SDGE says due to the extreme heat, it canceled all non-critical planned outages for Friday and the weekend. But a spokesperson said the one affecting the Delzura, Potrero, and the Campo area is a critical case of safety, where they have to replace wood poles to steel. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) -- One Marine was killed and six others injured in a rollover during a training exercise at Camp Pendleton Thursday morning. The rollover happened around 9 a.m. Thursday and involved a light armored vehicle. The six Marines injured in the crash were taken to a local hospital with injuries not considered serious. The Marines are from the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, according to officials. The cause of the rollover is under investigation. None of the Marines have been identified. 558

(KGTV) — A man was airlifted to the hospital Sunday after illegally climbing over a section of Calexico's border and falling.The man, who U.S. Customs and Border Protection said had crossed over illegally sometime just after 8 p.m., broke both of his legs and sustained a back injury from the 30-foot fall from atop the border wall.Video shows the man climbing over and falling to the ground, where he lay motionless.RELATED: Congress watchdog: Border wall may cost more, take longerBorder officials said they found him behind the nearby Gran Plaza Outlet Mall at about 9 p.m.Agents on the scene provided the man with first aid and called in emergency responders, who took the man to a Palm Springs medical center.El Centro Sector Border Patrol released the video on Twitter this week, reminding the public of the danger of attempting to climb the border wall. 890

CARLSBAD, California — A California says it lost thousands in a bank scam that started with a notice about fraudulent debit charges.Krystal, who did not want to share her last name, lives in Carlsbad with her husband and their dog, Otis. Her husband is in the Marines and was recently in dive school in Florida. During that time, he received a call from what they thought was a USAA representative.USAA is a financial institution that serves primarily military families.“They told him there were fraudulent charges on his debit card and if they weren’t from him, that they’ll cancel the card and give him a new one and it will be sent to him,” Krystal said.She said it was from a USAA phone number.“They sent him a code through via text and had him repeat it,” Krystal said. “You could tell it was from USAA because there are previous text messages from USAA from other times they sent us the code,” Krystal said.Krystal said the caller said they needed to give her husband a new pin number and asked for the current one. In hindsight, it was a red flag, but at the time, he was busy evacuating from Hurricane Michael. The call sounded legitimate, even using the same song USAA uses when her husband was put on hold.“They had his debit card number. They mentioned me as a second account holder,” Krystal said.Before they knew it, their checking account was drained of more than ,800.“[I was] very angry, very heartbroken. Panicking,” Krystal said.Stephen Cobb with cybersecurity firm ESET said technology to make phone numbers look like a different one is increasingly used by crooks."A phone today is just a computer endpoint on a network and as such, its identity can be spoofed,” Cobb said.Krystal’s fraud claim was first denied by USAA, but she kept calling the bank, determined to get answers.“I finally got a hold of somebody in the financial crime department. She was very apologetic [and] said this isn’t the first time she’s heard of this today,” Krystal said.Krystal said she found her debit card was used in multiple transactions on the East Coast. The scammer has not been found.She was finally able to get a refund but has since switched banks. Now if she gets a call from a financial institution, she asks for a call back number to make sure it is real.“It makes me really angry and really sick. I feel really sick to my stomach about it. It makes me think of people that are veterans. What if their money was taken away?” Krystal said.On its website, USAA said this cybercriminal activity is on the rise. Cathedral High School in Indianapolis announced the official name change of its entrepreneurship course to the "Chris Beaty Entrepreneurship Class."Chris Beaty was an Indianapolis business owner and former Indiana University football player who was beloved in the community.Beaty was one of two men who were shot and killed when violence erupted during police brutality demonstrations in Downtown Indianapolis. He was 38."There was so much pain caused by Chris's tragic murder, I felt it was too narrow to hear him only referred to as a former Cathedral and IU football player," Alex Purvis, who played football with Beaty at Cathedral High School in the early 2000's, said. "Chris was so much more than that, and I want to do my part to make sure his legacy continues at Cathedral."Purvis spearheaded the initiative to make the name change of the private school's entrepreneur course because he wanted to make sure Beaty was known for more than just football. Purvis says Beaty was not only an entrepreneur but says he was a friend, he was compassionate, and he always made people feel welcomed."He made everyone feel like a VIP. Few people have that ability," Purvis said.Purvis only knew Beaty for one year at Cathedral — but that was enough for Beaty to make an impact on Purvis.Purvis described himself as, "the smallest kid on the football team" his sophomore year, and Beaty was a senior star-athlete."Years later, when I started running into Chris downtown and various events, Chris always made me feel like I was the star quarterback on Cathedral's team. For no other reason than that was his genuine personality—he made people feel special. His warmth and positivity was infectious," Purvis said.Purvis said to best #LiveLikeChris, it's fitting to name Cathedral's entrepreneurship class in Beaty's honor. Beaty was always working on "the next big thing," Purvis said."I think the root of entrepreneurship is having the ability to take an idea and outlining the steps to make it happen," Purvis said. "That's exactly what Chris did. He was a doer, a leader, and a builder—his friends turned into business partners and vice versa."Both Cathedral High School and Indiana University have also created the "Chris Beaty Foundation Scholarship," in his honor."Using that foundation and exploring entrepreneurship in high school will hopefully open students' eyes to all of the possibilities they have in college and beyond. Students should know they are capable of creating their path, just like Chris Beaty did," Purvis said. "And they should know that they, too, have what it takes to live like Chris.
