A mother in Mesa, Arizona is voicing concern after her child's 4th-grade teacher changed words in the Declaration of Independence, and made the students recite the altered version in class. The teacher at Salk Elementary school crossed out the words "man" and substituted it with "human".The mother, Elizabeth Vaillencourt said the teacher's goal may have been to include women as well, but she went too far in altering a historical document. When Vaillencourt took this concern to school officials, she was initially told she had "hurt the teacher's feelings" by posting about it on social media. The school reacted by removing Vaillencourt's child from that teacher's classroom, and placing them under a different teacher. On Wednesday, Vaillencourt said the superintendent's office contacted her to tell her what the teacher did was against school policy.A Mesa Public Schools spokeswoman says they have policies in place when it comes to school ceremonies which includes reciting the Declaration of Independence. 1030

A Philadelphia woman is hailing a Cleveland Clinic doctor a hero after he helped save her life while on an airplane. On Saturday, 28-year-old Ashley Spencer boarded an American Airlines flight in Philadelphia destined for Cleveland. But shortly after the plane took off Spencer passed out."I stopped breathing," she said. "I still had a pulse. That's when the stewardess said, 'Is there any medical professionals on the aircraft? It's an emergency.'" Spencer, who has a severe peanut allergy, was having an allergic reaction to a bag of chips she had eaten right before the flight. Her body was going into anaphylactic shock. That's when Dr. Erich Kiehl, an electrophysiology fellow from the Cleveland Clinic, and another doctor from North Carolina sprang into action. The men injected Spencer with an Epi-Pen four separate times and monitored her vitals over and over.To make matters even scarier, Spencer suffers from Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), a rare auto immune disease. Because of the disease, she said her heart isn't in the best shape. She's spent the last several years in and out of the hospital undergoing several rounds of chemotherapy."When a person is going into anaphylactic shock it has to be taken seriously," she said. "Having Dr. Kiehl on board was so important. He was monitoring the heart completely." The plane made an emergency landing in Pittsburgh and Spencer was rushed to the hospital. She spent Saturday night in the ICU recovering from the reaction. Spencer said she's gone into anaphylactic shock in the past and has received treatment at the hospital, but the help she received from the men in the air was above and beyond."I would have to say the treatment I got on an aircraft was probably better," Spencer said. What's ironic is that Spencer was on the plane to Cleveland because on Monday she's scheduled to meet with doctors at the Cleveland Clinic in her search for answers about her rare disease.Spencer said she is eternally grateful for both doctors who helped her on the plane. She's already purchased plaques for both men as a way to say thank you."I am beyond thankful," she said. "I could have died up there." Spencer said she hopes the Cleveland Clinic can help her meet up with Dr. Kiehl while she's in town.  2428

A routine trip to Walmart turned into a nightmare for a Maryland woman, but now she is using her negative experience to help others. Cynthia Morales and her boyfriend Linwood Boyd, who are both blind, were at the self-checkout lane at the Walmart in Owings Mills, Maryland in late July 2017 when they asked an employee for help. While the self-serve kiosks do issue some spoken prompts, it was still a challenge for Morales and Boyd to check out. A Walmart employee helped the pair finish their transaction, but unbeknownst to Morales and Boyd, they requested in cashback, which the employee pocketed. Because no audio prompt gave them a total of their transaction, the couple had no idea this happened until the machine told them to take the cash. Unable to check their receipt, the couple asked someone outside of the store to read them it and discovered they had been charged the extra . The money was returned, but Morales and Boyd decided to shop at another nearby Walmart from then on. Because of their experience at the Walmart, they are teaming up with Melissa Sheeder — another blind Marylander — the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) and the National Federation of the Blind Maryland to sue Walmart under the Americans with Disabilities Act. “What happened to Cindy Morales is an extreme example of what can occur when companies like Walmart deploy inaccessible self-checkout or point-of-sale technology,” said Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind. “The real problem is that Walmart has decided to treat blind customers differently from sighted customers. Walmart’s refusal to deploy readily available technology to give blind shoppers the same choice sighted shoppers have — whether to check ourselves out or visit a cashier —makes us second-class customers. That is unlawful and unacceptable.”The lawsuit is asking for the Maryland federal district court to order Walmart to make its self-service checkout kiosks fully accessible to blind shoppers. The NFB says they have offered to work with Walmart to make their kiosks accessible but they declined the offer. Walmart officials released the following statement regarding the lawsuit: 2276

A second Trump Organization employee discussed a potential immunity deal with the federal prosecutors who charged Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's former personal attorney, according to people familiar with the matter. That employee ultimately did not receive immunity after prosecutors in the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York decided against granting such protection. The person was not called to testify before the grand jury, the people familiar with the matter said. The employee's identity couldn't be determined by CNN. Spokespeople for the US Attorney's office and Trump Organization declined to comment.News of the second employee's talks with prosecutors comes after Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg was granted immunity for providing information about Cohen. Weisselberg's interview with prosecutors focused on Cohen and the payments Cohen made to silence women during the election cycle who claimed affairs with Trump.Prosecutors also granted immunity to David Pecker, a longtime Trump ally and the CEO of tabloid publisher American Media Inc. Pecker told prosecutors that Trump had knowledge of Cohen's payments to women who had alleged sexual encounters with the then-presidential candidate, CNN reported. 1285
