CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - This week, we've heard promises surrounding treatment and vaccines related to COVID-19.Now, doctors at the University of North Carolina (UNC) are using next-generation genetic sequencing of the virus causing COVID-19 that can help testing and therapeutics.Dr. Dirk Dittmer, professor of microbiology and immunology at the UNC School of Medicine, has kept a close eye on COVID-19.“We know now more about this virus than any other virus before,” Dittmer told News 3. “The team has been working 24/7 ever since we had the first cases in March.”He and others are looking at how next-generation genetic sequencing can help with tracking mutations of the virus.“What we were looking at using next-generation technology is if the virus changes, who is the first person that had the virus in North Carolina? And, as we accumulated more and more cases, were these the same types of viruses we're seeing anywhere else in the world,” Dittmer said. “Very early on, we were able to show that one of the mutations that have been around in Europe was actually coming to the U.S.”The state-funded study shows this sequencing can help with the accuracy of diagnostic testing and vaccine effectiveness.“We wanted to make sure that the tests that were developed very early on would still work now and next year. CARLSBAD (CNS) - Attorneys for the alleged victims of a former Carlsbad military boarding school headmaster whose molestation conviction was overturned last week by a state appellate panel asked the San Diego County District Attorney's Office Wednesday to appeal the ruling or retry the case against him.Jeffrey Barton, 62, was convicted in 2017 of five felony counts of forcible oral copulation and one felony count of forcible sodomy for allegedly molesting a cadet at the Army and Navy Academy beginning in 1999, when the alleged victim was 14 years old.Barton was sentenced to 48 years in state prison.A three-justice panel from the Fourth District Court of Appeal agreed with Barton's contentions that the trial judge should not have dismissed one of the jurors during the trial and reversed the conviction on Friday.RELATED: Appeals court reverses molestation conviction for former Carlsbad boarding school headAttorney John Manly, whose firm represents four alleged victims in civil suits filed against Barton and the academy, said, "We disagree with the ruling of the court of appeal. The evidence against him is overwhelming and we ask District Attorney Stephan to appeal this decision and, if necessary, retry this case in the interest of justice and public safety."So far, two of those civil suits have been settled and two are pending.A District Attorney's Office spokeswoman said, "We have contacted the victims who testified in the case and are working to provide them support. At this time, we are exploring our appellate options, which include retrial."The convictions came in Barton's second trial.In his first trial, almost two years before, a different jury deadlocked on the charges involving the alleged victim.Two other former Army and Navy Academy students testified in the first trial that they were molested by Barton, but the defendant was acquitted on all but one of the counts involving those victims.The appellate panel ruled that Barton's second trial could have concluded differently had one juror not been excused, allegedly for refusing to deliberate with her fellow panelists.The justices wrote in their ruling that the other jurors appeared to disagree with Juror No. 12, but did not provide enough of a showing that she was actively stalling deliberations.The ruling indicates the juror did not appear to find the alleged victim credible."The trial court's error in discharging Juror No. 12 warrants reversal," the panel wrote. "She was the lone holdout juror who consistently held to her belief Barton was not guilty and, had she remained on the jury, it is reasonably probable the case would have ended in a mistrial, a more favorable result for Barton than conviction."The panel wrote that Barton was convicted "within hours" of the juror being discharged. 2921

CARSON (CNS) - San Diego State is scheduled to begin in its coronavirus-delayed football season tonight against UNLV at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, its home for this season and next as SDCCU Stadium is demolished and Aztec Stadium is built.San Diego State initially planned to make 2020 its final season at SDCCU Stadium, where it had played since 1967, but being able to expedite its demolition and construction of Aztec Stadium and the stadium's condition when the university took ownership of it from the city prompted a change of plans, according to athletic director John David Wicker.``The building was not in very good condition when we took it over,'' Wicker said at a Sept. 15 news conference announcing the decision. ``The amount of effort and dollars to get it up to speed to have people able to come in was somewhat challenging.''The university considered a site in San Diego to play its games until the planned opening of Aztec Stadium in 2022, ``but when you think about a Division 1 football experience and all of the different things that go along with that there wasn't a venue in town that was going to be consistently available for us to play in,'' Wicker said.``We just didn't think there were any venues in San Diego that could satisfy what we wanted to present for our student-athletes and also our fans,'' Wicker said.``As you think about some of the things around the game, our television partners and having the ability to come in and set up and do the television experience we want to put out led us to where we are today.''Fans will not be allowed to attend Saturday's game because of state health orders related to the coronavirus pandemic.
