SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - UC San Diego is a pilot school for an exposure notification system that alerts users if they’ve come in contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19. It’s a partnership with the state of California and officially launched on campus Thursday. The system uses smartphone technology to anonymously tell people they may have been exposed. It does not track locations and is completely anonymous. It starts working when a person downloads the system on their phone and enables notifications. It then records proximity to other devices that also have the program downloaded. If two phones come in contact with each other for more than about 15 minutes and are closer than around six feet, it takes note of that. Then, if a person tests positive later, they can go in the program and click a button saying they tested positive, and their system sifts through all the devices that previously had extended exposure, sending those users alerts about the possible exposure.Doctor Christopher Longhurst, Chief Information Officer and Associate Chief Medical Officer for UCSD Health said the biggest factor that will impact effectiveness is the number of users.“We’d like to see 75% of that community or more adopting. Modeling done by Oxford and other universities has shown that if we can get over 50% adoption in a population, you can actually help to end outbreaks,” said Doctor Longhurst. As of Friday, about one day into the official launch, the school said 7,985 people had signed up. The school could confirm there are about 10,500 students living on campus, but was not able to share how many faculty and staff are on campus. For instructions on how to download, click here. 1710

San Diego (KGTV)- CSU San Marcos is hoping to help low-income students enrolled in the chemistry and biochemistry department. The department received a nearly million grant. A new program is expected to lead to a higher graduation rate.“Students from our department, they get placed in graduate programs across the nation,” says Professor Robert Iafe. “A large percentage actually joins the workforce.”Iafe says it’s their goal to continue students down this path. The National Science Foundation awarded the department nearly million for scholarships for low-income students.“Training somebody from the community to go out into the community only makes it stronger.”Incoming freshmen will participate in the department’s new program, referred to as the Targeted Learning Community.“We’re going to have a community made up of about 30 students that start freshman year in the same classes and progress all throughout as a cohort, through their entire career as a student,” says Iafe. The money will help the students pay for tuition, books, and more.“They often have to find full-time jobs to support themselves,” says Iafe. “They often have to do other things to be equal to, and on top of, the other students that don’t have this financial burden.”The Targeted Learning Community is only for the fall’s incoming freshman, but the staff is hopeful it will become permanent. The department tried the program back in 2013, and students had a much higher percentage of graduating in four years. The Chemistry and Bio-Chemistry Department will be hosting live Zoom sessions for parents and high school seniors interested in the scholarship and Target Learning Community. The Zoom sessions will be held on October 16th, October 24th, and November 12th. 1759

San Diego (KGTV)- Hygiene continues to be a struggle for those living on the streets, especially during the pandemic. Non-profit Duwara Consciousness is helping the homeless gain access to a hot shower. The non-profit uses its food trailer to feed the homeless. On average, they provide about 1,500 meals per week."Our distribution network currently runs as far as San Ysidro and as far north as Carlsbad," says Harisimran Khalsa. But as we continue to experience the COVID-19 pandemic, Khalsa says access to a hot shower was limited for those in need. This prompted her and partner, Davinder Singh, to move forward with their idea of a shower trailer."Hygiene access is just not as frequent. So you do end up coming down with more bugs, more viruses," says Khalsa. "We think that this is really a time when we have to focus on hygiene for our homeless population."The shower trailer contains seven individual stalls, including one that is ADA compliant."It's really critical for our guests that they have a secure environment in which to shower."Khalsa says about 20 people can use the shower per hour. The stalls are cleaned after each use following CDC guidelines. The trailer comes equipped with sinks for people to wash their hands, shave or brush their teeth. It also has laundry services. The non-profit partners with other organizations to provide space and water.Duwara Consciousness plans to launch the shower trailer on Friday officially, but so far, they say users have been grateful for a simple hot shower. 1525

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A ceremony to remember those Missing in Action (MIA) and Prisoners of War (POW) was held on the USS Midway Saturday morning. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple is paying Intel billion for the chip maker's smartphone modem division in a deal driven by the upcoming transition to the next generation of wireless technology. The agreement announced Thursday comes three months after Apple ended a long-running dispute with one of Intel's rivals, Qualcomm. That ensured Apple would have a pipeline of chips it needs for future iPhones to work on ultrafast wireless networks known as 5G.The Apple-Qualcomm truce prompted Intel to abandon its attempts to make chips for 5G modems, effectively putting that part of its business up for grabs.Once the sale is completed later this year Apple will be picking up about 2,200 Intel employees and 17,000 wireless technology patents. Barring any complications, the deal is expected to close sometime between October and December.Apple's purchase of Intel's smartphone modem patents and other technology could bolster its attempt to build its own line 5G chips and lessen its dependence on Qualcomm. The Cupertino, California, has hammered out a licensing agreement with Qualcomm that carries through April 2025, with an option to extend for an additional two years after that.Qualcomm is a pivotal supplier in the rollout of 5G, particularly in the U.S. That's because President Donald Trump's administration has blacklisted another key 5G supplier, Huawei, as part of its trade war with China. So far, 5G connections are only available in a few cities in the U.S., but they are expected to become more prevalent by next year. The faster networks will enable consumers with 5G devices to download movies in a matter of seconds and access other streaming services more quickly.Apple isn't expected to release an iPhone that works on 5G networks until September 2020, putting it behind rivals such as Huawei and Samsung, which already make handsets that work with the faster wireless technology. The sale is a residue of Intel's inability to catch up with Qualcomm in the business of making chips for smartphone modems. Intel spent the past decade trying to make inroads in that market, with its big move coming in 2011 when it bought Infineon Technologies' smartphone modem division for .4 billion.Apple rarely spends a lot on acquisitions, preferring to snap up startups for relatively small sums. The price it's paying Intel ranks this deal among its largest besides its billion takeover of Beats' headphones and music streaming service in 2014.Even if the Intel acquisition turns out to be flop, it won't leave a major dent in Apple's finances. The company ended March with 5 billion in cash. 2613
