SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A Lemon Grove man was charged Wednesday with aiming a laser pointer at a San Diego Police helicopter as a demonstration moved through Hillcrest last weekend.Rudy Alvarez, 24, was charged with aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft hovering over the protest on June 6, according to the Department of Justice.A federal complaint alleges Alvarez shined a laser at the SDPD aircraft at about 8:30 p.m. in the area of the 500 block of University Ave. During that time, a large demonstration was moving through the area, investigators added.Alvarez was located multiple times over the next hour in the crowd, before police identified him on G St. just before 10 p.m. and arrested him without incident.Detectives say they found a high-powered gray metal laser pointer in his front left pant pocket."Aiming a laser pointer at or near an aircraft could cause distraction or blindness to a pilot and the consequences could be devastating," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. "We support the Constitutional rights of free speech and assembly, but it is our duty to protect the public and law enforcement from danger."Alvarez's bond was set at ,000 and his next hearing was set for June 23. 1205

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man is in custody after a chase ended in a standoff with police at a Mission Bay Motel Sunday morning. Police say the chase started just before 9 a.m. at the A-1 Storage on Garnett Avenue after officers received a citizens' tip. The suspect driving a U-Haul truck led police on a short chase to the 4300 block of Mission Bay Drive near Roadway in San Diego.According to police, the man is wanted on felony weapons charges. After the chase ended, a woman in the passenger seat was detained while the driver ran into the nearby motel. The woman was later released. While searching for the suspect throughout the motel, officers learned that the man broke through several walls to try and escape. “This guy starts forcing himself into apartments, and now we have to deal with a possible hostage situation. That’s the reason why we brought so many resources down here. We wanted to get this guy into custody as fast as we can," Lt. Christian Sharp with the San Diego Police Department said. Eventually, police had to use chemical gas and a K-9 to apprehend the suspect, who has yet to be identified.  1166

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A new interactive map produced by San Diego County officials shows the cities and communities hardest hit by the coronavirus.The county launched its COVID-19 case rate map on Thursday, and it uses a color tier system similar to the state’s “Blueprint for a Safer Economy” reopening plan.Users can look at case rates per 100,000 residents in specific areas or search by ZIP code.County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said, “Cities had previously requested the map to determine how they are faring during the pandemic. The map gives cities a clearer picture of how COVID-19 is impacting their residents and will help them determine whether to take more aggressive actions to enforce the public health guidance to slow the spread of the virus.”San Diego County tallied a record 661 coronavirus cases on Nov. 10. Bars, breweries and distilleries will be able to remain open as long as they are able to operate outside and with food on the same ticket as alcohol.Retail businesses and shopping centers will be able to remain open with 25% of the building's capacity. No food courts will be permitted.Schools will be able to remain open for in-person learning if they are already in session. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A gunman is on the loose after a Thursday morning shooting at Barrio Logan’s Chicano Park left a 19-year-old injured.San Diego police were called to the 2000 block of National Avenue, off Interstate 5, at around 1 a.m. in response to reports of dozens of shots fired.Details on what prompted the gunfire were unclear, but police confirmed a 19-year-old person was struck. The victim was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment.The victim’s condition is unknown.Police are searching for a Hispanic man in his 20s in connection with the shooting. They believe the gunman fled in a dark gray or silver car.About an hour later, as police were investigating the shooting, someone in the car matching a description of the getaway vehicle fired shots while on southbound I-5 towards officers at the shooting scene.No one was hurt in that gunfire. 878

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died Saturday night after deputies say he was attacked by a group of people while crossing the street in Vista. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the attack happened at 10 p.m. at the intersection of West Vista Way and Valencia Drive. Witnesses say the man was at the intersection when he was attacked by three men and a woman all in their 20s. RELATED: Man arrested after driving into crowd outside Encinitas barAfter falling to the ground, the victim was able to crawl onto the sidewalk before collapsing. He later died after being taken to the hospital. Deputies searched the area but were unable to locate any of the suspects.
