SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An SDG&E outage knocked out power to hundreds of South Bay customers Friday, including a money exchange operator whose backup generator may have contributed to a health crisis.According to SDG&E, about 703 customers in the areas of San Ysidro and Otay Mesa were affected by the outage that began at about 6:40 a.m. Service was supposed to be restored by 10:30 a.m., but that was pushed back to 12 p.m.Two people became ill and were taken to the hospital from a money exchange business using a power generator.According to SDG&E, a substation experienced a technical issue in which a capacitator failed. Crews had to go in a repair the substation before power could be restored. 716

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A water contact closure was extended Sunday to include the Silver Strand due to flows from the Tijuana River. According to the county, a water contact closure was issued Saturday for Imperial Beach. The closure was extended north to include the Silver Strand. “Sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary as a result of recent rainfall,” the Department of Environmental Health said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An investigation is underway after a fire damaged an abandoned home in Southcrest late Monday night.According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, crews were called to the fire on 36th and Newton avenue just before midnight.It took firefighters at least 15 minutes to stop the fire from spreading to nearby homes.Because the house is abandoned and boarded up, the fire is being considered suspicious and is being investigated.No one was injured in the fire. 489

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A state measure just signed into law prohibits landlords and HOAs from discriminating against tenants and members who display religious items on their doors. The new rule stems from a dispute in Little Italy between residents and their HOA. The law "protects the display of a religious item within 15x30 square inches, as long as it does not interfere with the opening or closing of the door," Matt Wagner, with the Anti-Defamation League. The display must not "interfere with building operations and must be posted do to a sincere religious belief," says Matt Wagner, with the Anti-Defamation League.  The new law will take effect on January 1, 2020. The bill was written after a Jewish family in Little Italy was told by their HOA to take down the mezuzah on their door. The HOA has not been named.The posting of the mezuzah is required of all observant Jews. If the display is not posted, it renders a Jewish family essentially unable to live in the home. The Anti-Defamation League stepped in asking the HOA to allow the posting of the religious symbol, but they refused. The new law applies to HOA's and all landlords throughout the state.  "Just because you are a renter… doesn't mean you lose your right to religious freedom or expression," says Assemblymember Todd Gloria. "You are entitled to the same rights and the same protections as a tenant. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An annual toy giveaway for San Diego military families looked different this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the reason for the event remains the same.For this year’s Operation Holiday Joy, the San Diego Armed Services YMCA chose hundreds of local military families who needed a little extra help this holiday season.On Wednesday, at the Murphy Canyon Chapel on Santo Road, the YMCA handed out boxes of gift-wrapped toys, and even bicycles, to more than 1,000 kids.Families were given books, a mini Christmas tree, and a gift card.Tim Ney, executive director of the San Diego Armed Services YMCA, said that now more than ever it’s important to support military families, as they too must deal with the additional challenges brought on by the pandemic.“Spouse employment is 30 percent, it’s really high. The online education and we’re doing the Achievement Academy where we’re taking the kids during the day. And doing the online learning, then we do STEM activities with them afterwards,” said Ney.It’s a little bit of extra help these military families are extremely thankful for.Emily, who is a military wife, told ABC 10News, “We’re so grateful and we’re thankful and blessed that everyone is so generous to give military families support, especially during this pandemic.
