BOAO, Hainan, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Competitions between China and India do not necessarily mean confrontation between the two neighboring Asian nations, Indian minister of state for environment and forests Jairam Ramesh said here Sunday."These two giants must cooperate, as the Chinese leaders say, in a harmonious manner," Ramesh said at the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) annual conference which concluded Sunday in south China's island province of Hainan.Ramesh said both sides have to move forward and compromise. For example, he said cooperation between India and China in the United Nations climate change conference last December in Copenhagen could become a "trigger for deepening cooperation" between the two nations in all fields. At a panel discussion, Ramesh was asked whether the competition between the two nations was as fierce as what was described in The Elephant and the Dragon: The Rise of India and China and What It Means for All of Us, a book written by American journalist Rogyn Meredith.

BEIJING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- China expressed its concerns Thursday about a Chinese coal ship that ran aground off the eastern coast of Australia.Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu told a regular press briefing China is paying close attention to the incident and has taken immediate action to deal with it.China is concerned an oil spill may pollute Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Jiang said, adding that the related shipping company and Australian authorities should enhance cooperation to appropriately address the issue.Jiang said China's embassy in Australia contacted local authorities and urged them to ensure the crew's safety.Australia has taken rescue measures in time, she said, noting that the body of the ship has been kept stable and the crew are safe. The Chinese-owned, 230m-long bulk coal carrier Shen Neng 1 ran aground about 70 km east of Great Keppel Island shortly after 05:00 p.m. local time on Saturday. About two tonnes of fuel oil have spilled, creating a slick about 3 km long and 100 meters wide. The vessel, carrying 950 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and 65,000 tonnes of coal, was bound for China.

BEIJING, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Growth in China's consumer price index (CPI) is likely to see a reverse "V" shape this year and the possibility of a serious inflation is easing, said Ha Jiming, chief economist at the China International Capital Corp. (CICC).Speaking at an investor education activity in Beijing Saturday, Ha expected China's CPI to increase 3.2 percent in May from a year earlier, and said the CPI annual growth rate would even peak at 4 percent in June and July. The country's CPI rose 2.4 percent year on year in March and the growth for April accelerated to 2.8 percent, according to statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics. The pick-up in CPI growth was a result of lower comparison base last year and the risk for a serious inflation in short term was defusing because both the global commodity prices and domestic meat and vegetable prices were falling, he said.In China, food prices accounted for one third of the CPI weight. The CICC has cut its estimate for China's economic growth this year to 9.5 percent from 10.5 percent, he said.Interest rate hikes would be unlikely this year as growth in consumer prices was expected to fall in the second half, he said.

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China's vegetable prices will fall further with increasing supplies as temperatures continue to climb, the National Development and Reform Commission, the country's top economic planner, said Wednesday.Average retail prices for 15 kinds of vegetables, including tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplants, dropped by 10.15 percent in May from April, the NDRC said.Prices for some vegetables fell drastically when the peak supply season came by the end of May, it said.NDRC monitoring showed prices of cucumbers on May 26 averaged 4.04 yuan (59 U.S. cents) per kg, 22 percent down from a month earlier while green rape dropped 20.1 percent in price month on month to 7.82 yuan per kg.In China, food prices account for a third of the weighting in the consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of the country's inflation.China's CPI picked up in April, rising 2.8 percent year on year because of lower comparison base last year and rising food prices because of adverse weather. The government set a target to keep the full-year growth in the CPI at about 3 percent this year.
