SHANGHAI, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Kaohsiung mayor Chen Chu met with her Shanghai counterpart Han Zheng Saturday afternoon during her visit to the mainland.     Chen was to promote the World Games, to be held in Taiwan's port city Kaohsiung from July 16 to 26. Shanghai is the last leg of her promotion tour.     Han expressed his confidence in deepening cooperation between the two port cities.     "With development of cross-straits ties, exchanges between Shanghai and Kaohsiung are more frequent than before," he said. UNITED NATIONS, June 15 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called for the peaceful resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic negotiations.     La Yifan, minister-counselor of China's Permanent Mission to the UN, told a Security Council meeting that China has always called for resolving the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic negotiations in a peaceful manner.     "China always believes that resolving this issue through diplomatic means is in the interest of peace and security in the Middle East and is in the common interest of the international community," he said.     La said China is ready to continue to play a constructive role in this regard.     At present, "rare opportunities" exist with regard to the restart of the negotiations with Iran over the nuclear issue, he said.     La called on Iran to strengthen its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to resolve outstanding issues as early as possible.     He also urged the international community to seize the opportunity to intensify diplomatic efforts so as to ensure an early start of the negotiations.

BRUSSELS, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Senior officials and scholars from the European Union (EU) and China held a conference here, urging the two sides to enhance cooperation dedicated to seeking a global solution to the financial crisis.     "After the financial crisis hit us, we stood closer, supported each other and worked together for an early recovery of our economy and that of the world. We become tightly bound more than ever before," Chinese ambassador to the EU Song Zhe said in a keynote speech at the conference in the European Parliament on Monday.     "We have every reason to cooperate," Song said, adding China and the EU have converging interest and share common responsibility.     Sino-EU relations has experienced slight derailing last year, as China postponed a summit with the EU due to French President Nicolas Sarkozy's decision to meet the ** Lama when France held the EU presidency. Relations appeared back on track in the face of the global financial crisis.     Early this year, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Europe on a Journey of Confidence. We should look at developing countries and emerging economies," he added.
