General Motors’ self-driving car company will attempt to deliver on its long-running promise to provide a more environmentally friendly ride-hailing service in an unorthodox vehicle designed to eliminate the need for human operators to transport people around crowded cities.The service still being developed by GM’s Cruise subsidiary will rely on a boxy, electric-powered vehicle called “Origin” that was unveiled late Tuesday in San Francisco amid much fanfare. It looks like a cross between a mini-van and sports utility vehicle with one huge exception — it won’t have any steering wheel or brakes. The Origin will accommodate up to four passengers at a time, although a single customer will be able summon it for a ride just as people already can ask for a car with a human behind the wheel from Uber or Lyft.For all the hype surrounding the Origin’s unveiling, Cruise omitted some key details, including when its ride-hailing service will be available and how many of the vehicles will be in its fleet. The company indicated it will initially only be available in San Francisco, where Cruise has already been offering a ride-hailing service that’s only available to its roughly 1,000 employees.By eliminating the need for a human to drive, Cruise theoretically will be able to offer a less expensive way to get around — a goal already being pursued by self-driving car pioneer Waymo, a Google spinoff that has been testing robotaxis in the Phoenix area for nearly three years.Cruise had planned to have a robotaxi service consisting of Chevrolet Bolts working without human backup drivers by the end of 2019, but moved away from that last year after one of Uber’s autonomous test vehicles ran down and killed a pedestrian in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe, Arizona, during 2018.Still aware of the fallout from that deadly crash, Cruise is promising “superhuman performance” from the Cruise, which GM hopes to manufacture at half the price of comparable vehicles using fuel-combustion engines. GM also expects to announce where the Origin will be made within the next few weeks, Cruise CEO Dan Amman said.The Origin won’t be sold to consumers though. “It is not a product you can buy, but an experience you share,” Amman said.The Origin represents another significant step for Cruise, which had only 40 employees when GM bought it in 2016 as part of its effort to catch up in the race to build cars that can drive themselves. Since then, Cruise has attracted more than billion from investors, including .75 billion from Honda and .25 billion from Japanese tech investment firm SoftBank. Honda also helped develop the Origin. GM currently values Cruise at billion, fueling speculation that the subsidiary may eventually be spun off as a publicly traded company.Whenever Cruise’s ride-hailing service makes its debut, it will still be chasing Waymo, whose work on self-driving car technology began inside of Google more than a decade ago. Waymo’s Phoenix-area service already has given more than 100,000 rides, according to the company. It expanded beyond the test phase service 13 months ago with a ride-hailing app that now has about 1,500 active monthly riders, Waymo says.By comparison, ride-hailing leader Uber now boasts about 103 million active monthly users with a service that relies on human drivers — a dependence that is the main reason the company has been losing money throughout its history. Despite the fatal 2018 crash that stoked the public’s worst fears about self-driving cars, Uber is still trying to build a fleet of robotic taxis as part of its question to become profitable.Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also pledged that his company’s electric cars will be able to drive themselves without a human behind the wheel before the end of this year so they can moonlight as taxis when their owners don’t need the vehicles, but industry analysts doubt that promise will come to fruition. 3921

As a result, the President's last-minute request threatens to derail the potential to strike a deal on infrastructure.The meeting has been expected to grapple with the thorny question of how to pay for a deal after Pelosi and Schumer announced at the end of last month's meeting with the President that Trump had agreed to a top-line price tag of trillion for infrastructure spending, but that they would need to meet again to discuss how to pay for the plan.In a joint statement later in the evening on Tuesday, Pelosi and Schumer made no mention of the trade agreement and instead focused on how to pay for an infrastructure deal, emphasizing that they expect Trump to come to the table with a proposal."On Wednesday, we look forward to hearing the President's plan for how to pay for this package," the top congressional Democratic leaders said."We told the President that we needed his ideas on funding," Schumer said at the conclusion of the initial meeting, adding, "Where does he propose that we can fund this because certainly in the Senate if we don't have him on board it will be very hard to get the Senate to go along."The President in his letter to Democratic congressional leaders on Tuesday wrote, "It would be helpful if you came to tomorrow's meeting with your infrastructure priorities and specifics regarding funding you would dedicate to each."Infrastructure could be a rare area of bipartisan cooperation given that both Democrats and the President have long talked about investing in the nation's crumbling infrastructure as a top priority. But the sticking point in any deal will be how to pay for it and it is possible that hopes for finding common ground could crumble this week if no agreement is reached during the second round of talks over a way to pay for infrastructure investment.The fact that hostilities between Democrats and the White House continue to escalate over congressional oversight efforts could make it more difficult to reach a compromise. Some House Democrats are calling for an impeachment inquiry as the administration blocks oversight efforts. Pelosi has argued in recent weeks that Trump is effectively building a case on his own for impeachment, but has also advocated for a cautious approach and worked to tamp down on impeachment talk on the Hill. From Italian ice to frozen custard, the Everetts family has been in the frozen dessert business for 25 years. Business has always been booming at the local hot spot, which is managed by Al Everetts and his son, Troy. But it was Troy's interest in the cannabis business that sparked an idea to grow their reach.“I was in the dispensary and I saw 20 grams of this, 20 grams of chocolate bars, and I was like, 'There's no frozen products,’" Troy Everetts says. Troy saw products containing cannabidiol (CBD), an active ingredient in cannabis derived from hemp plants. It's used to help treat anxiety, chronic pain and neurological disorders like epilepsy. As an oil from the cannabis plant, it usually only contains trace amounts of THC, but not nearly enough to get you high. So why not put CBD in their homemade Italian ice? Well, easier said than done. CBD oil isn't water soluble. "It's really hard, because it likes to float to the top and so it's really hard to get it mixed through the ice," says Marissa Foersch with Primal, a smoke and vape shop in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. CBD connoisseurs say there has to be some sort of fat in the product for the CBD to hold onto. "That's why a lot of people use coconut oil or ice cream and stuff like that," Al says.When the Everetts family pitched the idea of using Italian ice, there was a bit of skepticism among cannabis companies. "They were questioning us. They said, 'I don't think you're going to get the oil in the Italian ice in the water. You won't do it in a non-dairy product,’" Al recalls. But Al was up for the challenge. He spent a month using his Italian ice expertise to find a solution. The end product is 30 milligrams of CBD mixed into a cup of flavored ice. Flavors include lemon, cherry and mango. However, the process is under wraps. Right now, the father and son duo are working to move into a bigger facility across town to help meet the demand for their Mt. Everetts Frozen Creations products. "We had to expand from our little ice cream shop in the back to this, so it's amazing how we're growing," Al says.Al says the extra fridge space will soon be necessary as they're starting to hear from people all over the country. CBD stores in South Carolina, Florida, New York and Alaska are already on the list. But until then, they're focused on supplying the northeast."We're excited about it," Al says. "The response has been unbelievable."Their biggest fans are people who have relied on CBD for medical purposes. The Everetts' say that alone makes the hard work worth it."The other day there was an older man who said, 'I was in a lot of back pain' and he ate one, and he said his back wasn't hurting him anymore," Troy says.
