SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There is new frustration for San Diegans trying to cutback their spending amid coronavirus restrictions.Some companies are refusing to freeze automatic renewals despite being closed. That's leading to resentment as workers across the county face layoffs, furloughs and reduced hours. Amanda Sullivan, a mental health professional, says she's still being billed a month for her 24 Hour Fitness membership, despite the gym shuttered. 24 Hour Fitness promises instead to add the lost time to the end of her membership. "It feels like robbery," she said. "We're taking your money, you can't do anything about it, we're telling you this is what we're offering, we'll just tack on time at the end."Sullivan said her emails to 24 Hour Fitness have gone largely ignored, or she's received boilerplate responses. Meanwhile, 24 Hour Fitness has shuttered its call center. In a statement, the gym stood by its decision, noting it also made available its subscription app that includes exercise instruction."24 Hour Fitness is focused on the continued health and safety of our club members, team members and guests. With that in mind, we have made some difficult decisions to ensure our ability to provide services to our club members and sustain our business over the long term," the statement said.The coronavirus shutdowns have prompted a variety of responses from membership-based businesses.While 24 hour is billing as normal, other gyms, like CorePower, OrangeTheory and Chuze have frozen fees. LA Fitness will only keep billing if a club reopens in the San Diego market by April 1.The San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld say they will extend annual passes to make up for the lost time. Spokespeople for both parks say additional questions should be directed to customer service. Consumer attorney Frederick Schenk, of CaseyGerry, says each subscription contract is different but he says it's always worth a phone call to ask for a refund. "I'm finding that vendors are working with their customers to come to terms with this horrible dilemma," Schenk said. "We're all facing it, and we have to face it together. So if a vendor thinks that it's going to take advantage of its members it will find in the not-too-distant future it will have lost that member and many others."Michael Weiner, a consumer attorney with Slate Law Group, said it is difficult to analyze situations without seeing individual contracts, but in general a consumer would appear to be on strong legal footing if he or she is being billed for something they aren't getting. Weiner suggested reaching out to corporate, and posting on social media if things don't change. "If they were still rebuffed, there are multiple avenues to take, from hiring counsel to speak to the company on their behalf, to filing a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the local San Diego Chamber of Commerce," Weiner said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Department of Agriculture is warning residents not to open unsolicited packets of seeds some people reported receiving from China.The department says it has taken 58 calls from people reporting receiving the seeds as of Wednesday afternoon and warns anyone who receives a package to not plant the seeds or throw them away. “The main concern with these seeds is that they were mislabeled and went through customs without an inspection. Seed from other countries might have pests or diseases that don’t exist here. The County Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures is constantly looking for invasive pests which can be weeds, insects, or diseases. Carmel St, San Marcos 92128 or 9325 Hazard Way, San Diego 92123 address. She said she didn't think anything of it when it arrived at her Imperial Beach home a few weeks ago."I said 'I don’t remember ordering and I thought maybe I did, or maybe it was a free gift or something,'" she said.She put the package aside until recently, when posts and warnings about the seeds started circulating. She said she's happy she didn't throw it away or plant them, but is nervous that her name, address and phone number were all on the package.Reports of unidentified seeds from China have been popping up across the country. All 50 states have now issued warnings about the packages. The department believes it is all part of a “brushing” scam used to boost ratings for online vendors. The packaging label ranges from jewelry to "handmade flowers," and the seeds on the inside vary in size and shape.“At this time, we don’t have any evidence indicating this is something other than a ‘brushing scam,’ where people receive unsolicited items from a seller who then posts false customer reviews to boost sales. USDA is currently collecting seed packages from recipients and will test their contents and determine if they contain anything that could be of concern to U.S. agriculture or the environment,” the USDA said.Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, said at a briefing on Tuesday that the address labels were forged and that China Post has asked USPS to send those packages to China for investigation. 2618

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three cars were damaged during a pursuit through Cortez Hill Monday afternoon. According to police, the chase began around 3:50 p.m. at the intersection of Ninth Avenue and Beech Street. The reason for the chase was unclear. The chase ended a short distance away on the 1300 block of Park Boulevard. During the chase, the suspect struck three other vehicles, two of which were parked. Two suspects were arrested and police say no serious injuries were reported following the crash. 510

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department is increasing staffing ahead of Santa Ana winds expected to swirl around the county to start the work week. On Sunday, 10News got a hands-on tour of Station 14 in North Park. It is one of five San Diego Fire stations with an engine, ladder truck, and now a fully staffed brush truck for the next two days. "Our brush rigs are always able to be covered," San Diego Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Kelly Zombro said. "We just have to un-staff a rig to move over to it. In this case, those rigs are actually covered right now, and they can all go."Because of the upcoming Santa Ana winds, the Department is staffing 25 additional crew members, specifically for wildfires. While engines and ladder trucks are most commonly used in day-to-day operations, the 0,000 brush truck is on a league of its own."It's imperative that we are able to make access quickly into areas where the engine cannot get into," Fire Engineer, Tim Swanson said. "And that's why we have these brush rigs."Unlike the concrete jungle in New York City, the City of San Diego has many different kinds of terrain. Because of that, in the academy, all firefighters are trained in all three truck types: engine, ladder, and brush.The brush truck has off-road tires, a 600-gallon tank, and specialized tools like backfire canisters, burn-over protection, and this triple hose backpack. The truck may even become a mobile home for the crew. That is why it has comfortable seats and carries household items. "If we're out on a strike team, we are gone for sometimes two weeks at a time with little to no ground support," Swanson said. "So, we need to be self-sufficient for two weeks."Even if fires do not erupt in our area, they are always ready to go."Sometimes, when [Northern California] is asking for help, we have to do it," Deputy Chief Zombro said. "And we just have to up our game down here to make sure we stay covered, and we've always done that."After two days, the department will re-assess to see if they need to continue the increased staffing.
