SAN DIEGO (CNS) - California Highway Patrol officers arrested fewer people than last year for suspected drunk driving in San Diego County so far during the Christmas holiday enforcement period, the agency said today.CHP officers arrested 33 people in the county between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Sunday, an officer said. That's down from 40 arrests in the area at the same time last year.Statewide, the CHP arrested 639 people for suspected DUI violations Friday night and early Sunday, up from 604 in 2017.There were 20 traffic fatalities reported by law enforcement agencies across the state during the period -- including one in San Diego County. There were four fatalities reported statewide at this point in the Christmas holiday last year. 752

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con accused of sexually assaulting a 24-year-old woman in broad daylight on a Mission Beach street pleaded not guilty Thursday to a charge of assault with intent to commit a sex crime. Philemon Shark, 40, who has two prior convictions from Washington state for residential burglary from 2014 and 2015, faces life in prison if convicted, said San Diego County Deputy District Attorney Trisha Amador. Judge Joseph Brannigan set Shark's bail at million and ordered the defendant to have no contact with the alleged victim. Amador said all sexual assaults -- no matter what level -- are ``serious'' and taken ``exceptionally serious'' by the District Attorney's Office. ``I think part of the concern is that when an individual is attacked in broad daylight in an area where they felt safe or did not feel a threat, of course that's added concern, but our office takes all sexual assaults equally as serious,'' the prosecutor said outside court. The attack happened about 8:40 a.m. last Sunday on Bayside Lane near San Jose Lane, just off Mission Boulevard, according to San Diego Police Lt. Jason Weeden. Weeden said the victim was walking south when Shark allegedly approached her from behind, threw her to the ground and held her down while he assaulted her. The woman screamed for help, and several residents forced the man off her, the lieutenant said. When Shark tried to leave, some of the residents followed him but lost track of him, Weeden said. Then, about 45 minutes after the attack, one of the neighbors found Shark hiding in a breezeway. Shark allegedly fled but was apprehended by patrol officers and booked into jail. Weeden said Shark is from the Seattle area and was believed to have been living in San Diego for the last few months. He will be back in court Jan. 8 for a readiness conference and Jan. 10 for a preliminary hearing. 1880

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Military officials today publicly identified a U.S. Marine who was fatally injured in a weekend training accident at Camp Pendleton.Staff Sgt. Joshua Braica, 29, was behind the wheel of a MRZR tactical vehicle that overturned Saturday at the military station north of Oceanside, according to Maj. Nicholas Mannweiler of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command. Two other Marines suffered minor injuries in the crash.Braica, a critical-skills operator with 1st Marine Raider Battalion, was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he succumbed to his injuries Sunday evening.The Sacramento native enlisted in the Marine Corps in July 2010 and served as an intelligence specialist with 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, and with Marine Aircraft Group 36.Braica deployed to the Pacific Command area of operations with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit in 2011, and to the Indo-Pacific Command region with 1st Marine Raider Battalion in 2017.His military decorations include a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, two Good Conduct Medals, a National Defense Service Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and three Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.He is survived by his wife and son. 1284

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County environmental health officials issued a water contact closure Friday along the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and Border Field State Park due to sewage-contaminated water. The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health issued the closure Friday afternoon following rainfall this week that caused contaminated water in the Tijuana River to flow into U.S. waterways. County officials regularly issue beach closures after rainstorms due to contaminated flows from the river. The closure extends along the shoreline from the U.S.-Mexico border to the southern end of Seacoast Drive. County officials have placed water contact closure signs to alert beachgoers of the water's contamination. The signs will remain in place until water sampling meets state health standards. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Countywide sales of previously owned single-family homes and attached properties fell from July to August while median sales prices ticked up slightly, according to data released Monday by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors. Single-family home sales fell 7.4% -- from 2,144 in July to 1,985 last month -- while sales of attached properties, such as condominiums, fell 8.6% from 1,100 in July to 1,005 in August. Sales of both property types have vacillated between increases and decreases since May. Median sales prices of both property types have risen fairly steadily for most of the year, according to the GSDAR. Single-family home prices rose 0.5% from 7,000 in July to 0,000 in August, and attached property prices increased 1.2% from 5,000 in July to 0,000 last month. ``The 30-year mortgage rates are approaching the historic lows of 2016,'' SDAR President Kevin Burke said. ``Whether that can give the housing market some relief is still dependent on an increase in our supply of homes for sale. Until then, buyers will have to be on their game.'' Year-over-year property sales also fell last month when compared to August 2018.
