AURORA, Colo. – One of the deans of instruction at Aurora West College Preparatory Academy was arrested Thursday on suspicion of carrying a weapon on school grounds and carrying a concealed weapon.Tushar Rae, 30, was still jailed in Denver Thursday afternoon on a 0,000 bond following his arrest stemming from the case out of Arapahoe County, according to court records.Carrying a weapon on school grounds is a class 6 felony while carrying a concealed weapon is a class 2 misdemeanor in Colorado.According to an informed source with knowledge of the investigation, arresting documents detail a tense confrontation between the school's principal and Rae before his arrest. The documents show Principal Taisiya “Taya” Tselolikhina received a text at around 2 p.m. Wednesday from Rae, telling her to “meet in the office” after the dean of instruction didn’t show up to school the whole day and didn't inform anyone he was going to be absent.Once in the office, Rae reportedly placed a gun on a counter and said, “Try and f—k with me. You shouldn’t have said what you said. I don’t want to hurt you. I’m going to hurt all the people around you.”The documents also stated Rae then said he was going to “shoot the kneecaps off two other people” before asking the principal what she was going to do about it."I came prepared,” Rae allegedly told Tselolikhina before he patted his pocket adding that “he had two extra rounds.”The arresting documents show Rae then told the principal to walk away or he would “shoot the next person outside the door.”The documents then state two students were outside the office and the school was placed on lockdown.Aurora police tweeted Wednesday that West Middle School was on lockdown because of a threat of an armed party in the area. The department later tweeted that a suspect was taken into custody by Denver police. But communications made to parents following the incident tell a different story about the lockdown.A call from the principal made to parents on Wednesday stated that Aurora Public School officials and Aurora Police Department investigated a possible threat at the school and that “there were rumors of an armed individual in the area” – hours after the district, school administrators and the school principal were all well aware Rae was on campus allegedly armed with a gun and reportedly making threats.A second call from the school on Thursday afternoon stated that after school officials learned about the allegations, “we promptly placed the employee on administrative leave."Rae, who remains is jail, is not allowed on school grounds pending the outcome of the criminal investigation. 2654

At least 28 churches around the country have now opened their doors to people fearing deportation and family separation. First Unitarian Church in Denver was one of the first to adopt the designation.Reverend Mike Moran with First Unitarian Church says it hasn’t always been easy.“We have received threats. We have received bomb threats, personal threats,” he explains.Members of the church formed a volunteer guard network, partly because of those threats. They patrol the church and guard the door almost 24-hours per day.Randy Chase, 69, is one of the guards. He spends much of his time on duty checking to make sure doors are closed and locked.“These instructions envision talking to officials and officers through the door, through this crack in the door and passing paper back and forth,” says Chase, pointing to a piece of paper taped to a wall.Chase says he worries his friendly nature may be taken by immigration agents as an invitation to come in. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers have come under scrutiny in the past for what some critics say are tricky tactics.Chase says he’s concerned those tactics could affect Jeanette Vizguerra, the woman he is trying to protect.Vizguerra has spent more than two decades in the U.S. and hasn’t been able to get citizenship. She has a stay order, which allows her to remain in the U.S. She’s living in sanctuary at First Unitarian Church.“I am an activist for more than 25 years,” Vizguerra says in Spanish. She’s worried her position as an activist makes her one of ICE’s targets.“I am of 10 people around the country who are very vocal. My social media accounts are monitored,” she explains.Vizguerra sees the church as the safest place she can be while her case plays out. She says it won’t impact her activism.“I see my future as continuing to help people because it is my nature,” says Viguerra. “That is my challenge to achieve solutions to the issue of immigration.” 1947

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning of a Salmonella outbreak linked to contact with pet turtles. The CDC says at least 21 people across 13 states have been infected with the outbreak strain Salmonella Oranienburg, seven of which have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported though. “Epidemiologic and traceback evidence” indicate that contact with pet turtles is the likely source of the outbreak, according to the CDC. The agency says 12 of 17 ill people interviewed reported coming in contact with red-eared sliders and other turtles that were larger than four inches in length. The CDC says illnesses started on dates ranging from May 29 to Sept. 3. Ill people range in age from less than one year old to 80 years old, with the median age being 24. Turtles can carry Salmonella germs in their droppings while appearing healthy and clean. The CDC says those germs can easily spread to their bodies, tank water and habitats. People can get sick after they touch a turtle or anything in their habitats. Salmonella symptomsMost people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria. The illness usually lasts four to seven days and officials say most people recover without treatment. However, the illness may be so severe in some patients that they need to be hospitalized. The infection can spread to the intestines to the bloodstream and then other places in the body. Children younger than five years old, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. How to avoid being infected with SalmonellaTo 1694

Buying a hybrid or electric car used to get you a tax break, back in the Obama era. Now, though, it's just the opposite in several states, where hybrids are being hit with new taxes.Across the country, states are asking them to pay new fees for road upkeep as lawmakers say these cars don't pay their fair share when compared with gasoline cars. But some owners claim they are being charged more for going green, and they are not happy at all. Among them: Vic and Donna Riley, who are big fans of hybrid cars, and now own their second Toyota Prius. The Rileys are furious that their Prius will now be charged extra at annual plate renewal time. They feel the state is penalizing them for driving a fuel efficient car."To punish individuals who buy hybrid cars I don't think is fair," Vic Riley said. "We do it to save money, and save the environment."New fees reduce hybrid cost advantageThe latest state to add an extra fee is Ohio, where as of July 1, 2019, hybrid owners pay a 0 surcharge each year. Owners of electric cars like Teslas and Nissan Leafs will have to pay another 0 at renewal time. After years of subsidizing hybrid cars, with incentives as high as ,000 for buyers, 22 states are now going after them for between and 0 a year, according to 1283
