CAMERON PARISH, La. – Hurricane Laura made landfall along the Louisiana coast, specifically near the community of Cameron. Not much information has come out from there, in part because several of the roads that lead down there remain flooded. Highway 27, one of the main roads in and out of the communities of Creole and Cameron, is covered in water.A deputy with the sheriff’s office said they had not been able to return to their station in Cameron. They left Wednesday before the storm.The roads are barely passable there – in order to get to an elevated bridge on 27, drivers need to use a gravel shoulder between the main road and the waterway that runs next to it. About 12 miles from the shore, the road begins to flood.It can be a little deceiving here in coastal Louisiana because the coast is made up of bayous and marshes.Some people have taken it upon themselves to bring their personal boats in an attempt to get to some of those communities along the coast.The sheriff’s office said some people did ride out Hurricane Laura in some of those coastal communities, but communications have been spotty at best. As for the roads, the water will need to recede, before the recovery there can truly begin. 1220

CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) - U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped a “brazen” smuggling attempt Wednesday at the U.S.-Mexico fence in East San Diego County, officials said. Agents near Campo reported the incident Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. when a Dodge 4500 utility truck crossed into the U.S. Fifteen minutes later, agents saw a man who had a truck matching the suspect vehicle, using bolt cutters trying to cut the lock of a South Bay resident’s private gate. Agents tried to stop the man, but he drove off. RELATED: Border Patrol arrests teen with toy car at U.S.-Mexico borderFollowing a short pursuit, the truck stopped and everyone inside ran away, Border Patrol officials said. “A vehicle drive-thru, with overloaded and unsecured passengers, particularly in this terrain, can certainly result in a rollover accident with serious injuries and death,” said San Diego Sector Interim Chief Douglas Harrison. “The breach of this old landing mat wall is illustrative of the need for more hardened infrastructure with greater impedance and denial capabilities to keep the area secure. I’m proud of our agents’ steadfast vigilance that put a stop to this smuggling attempt.” Agents captured 16 people who admitted to entering the country illegally. The group consisted of nine men and five women from Mexico, and a man and woman from Guatemala. Buried at the core of "Mulan" is the concept of deception. Deceiving others for the perceived greater good, deceiving an overzealous enemy and even deceiving one's self at a steep price.All of them are at play in the long-awaited, oft-disappointing live-action remake.There are some things going for the oft-dull film.Director Niki Caro, who proved adept at inspirational tales with "Whale Rider," "North Country" and "McFarland, USA," has a pulse on the heart of the feminist fable, about a woman who masquerades as a man to protect her family and homeland. The visuals are dynamic, and the casting is note-perfect.Martial arts legends Jet Li, Donnie Yen and Gong Li play significant roles, and the cinematography and choreography often recalls exaggerated, Ang Lee-style theatrics.The core of the film -- that Mulan could convincingly trick her military comrades into thinking she's a man -- falls flat. While Liu Yifei thrives with the athletic ability and emotion needed in the lead role, the makeup department did her no favors. She looks more like a supermodel than a rough-hewn male soldier. Scenes in which men assume her gender are unintentionally funny.The new "Mulan" takes a more somber and serious tone than the original, swapping out the Eddie Murphy-voiced comic relief dragon Mushu for a CGI Phoenix, and subduing most musical moments in favor of tense, overly dry brooding.It's been a long and rough wait for superfans. Originally slated for a July 24 release, the movie was bumped to August 21, before landing September 4 on Disney+ as a early access add-on. It will be free on the app December 4, and unless you're a superfan, you're best off waiting until then.At least fans will be able to be mildly disappointed in the comfort of their own homes, and be able to hit pause if they get a little drowsy.There is impressive artistry at work. The film is every bit as gorgeous and sweeping as Disney's best live-action remakes: "The Jungle Book" and "The Lion King."Add this one to the pile of disappointing live-action remakes of Disney classics, along with "Aladdin," "Dumbo," "Alice in Wonderland," "Lady and the Tramp" and "Beauty and the Beast."The movie's legacy may well be what it does for boosting Disney's app and changing the way studios sell movies to the public. CARLSBAD (KGTV) - In response to a four year construction project that recently kicked off, California Highway Patrol has lowered the speed limit on a stretch of interstate 5 by 10 miles per hour. The stretch is about eight miles long, through Encinitas and Carlsbad. The entire project will eventually go all the way to the 78. The project with add HOV lanes over the next four years. The new speed limit will help to protect workers in the area working closely to the passing vehicles. California Highway Patrol officer Mark Latulippe tells 10News, "the days of well we just put the signs up and we’re giving you a grace limit, are over". They've put up dozens of signs to warn people of the change, dropping the speed limit to 55 miles per hour. Despite the many signs drivers are ignoring the change and sticking to their normal speeds upwards of 70 miles per hour. The signs have been up for about a month but Latulippe says, "we are sending enforcement units out now to start that ticketing process of trying to slow this down". Drivers can now expect to get pulled over and ticketed from here on out. Because the area is a work zone, the tickets will be double the normal speeding fine. 1202

CARLSBAD (CNS) - A 47-year-old man suffered severe injuries when he lost control of his speeding car and struck a tree on a Carlsbad street, police said Tuesday.Dispatchers received a report of a solo vehicle crash shortly before 6:10 p.m. Monday in the 7100 block of Corintia Street, off Alga Road, Carlsbad police Lt. Christie Calderwood said.Officers responded and found the man -- a Carlsbad resident -- unconscious inside a Mercedes-Benz CLS 55 sedan, Calderwood said.A preliminary investigation found that the victim was speeding when he struck a curb, lost control of the sedan and crashed into the tree, the lieutenant said.Paramedics took the injured motorist to the hospital for treatment of "severe injuries," Calderwood said. An update on the man's condition was not immediately available and it was not immediately known if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.Anyone with information about the crash was asked to contact Cpl.
